We are info | that this one is only the commence ment of tho grain business at this point. He says they expect this year ect an ele of double the o pacity. He ves it as his opin- ton that in a fow yearsa large portion of the grain handling will be done in Council Bluffs, and that ten years henee we can ronst of fifty thousand inhabitants at t. There can be no doubt that the two cities on the Miesouri at this point ten years hence will contain one¢ hundred thousand souls, which city shall contain the groater number il depend grontly upon which puts forth the greatest exertion. Omaha at the present time leads us about 5,000. She got this start by having and holding for a long time the eastorn terminus of the U. P. railroad. Since the decision of the United States supreme court in our favor we have been narrowing the space between us in spite of drawbacks that always come to a young city. Thero is scarcely a stranger who visits our city but will make the remark, “You have the best location for a manufacturing centre in this country,” and there is no question about it that Council Blufls cannot bo excellod as location by any city in America in that direction.” Located nearly in the geo- graphical conter of the ‘‘states,” with railroad facilities unsurpassed, near conl mines that are inexhaustible, with plonty of water the year round, cer- tainly there can bo 1o more desirable location, everything sered, than Council Bluffs for a great manufactur- ing centre. Corn, hogs and wheat will feed the peoplo; but they alone never build up large flourish com- munities. The little ““Nut-meg" state, with less than 600,000 inhabitants, has & rovenue from her manufacturing industries alone of neurly 8180,000,- 000, and wo find a very largo per contage of her laboring classes on- gaged in manufacturing small articles, pins, ncedles, hooks, brushes, combs, and in fact nearly tho whole list of small things are mado in little Con- necticut, and nearly all of them could be manutactured right in thi city. The mayor and city council claim that the financial condition will be shown by actual figures to bo such that overy citizen will say at the end of the yoar, ‘Well done, good and faithful servants.
