Mr, "COUNCIL BLUFFS, | Tho Present Financial Condition | of the Oity, ‘ The Committee Appointed to| Secure the State Fair at This Point. The Organization of the Free Public Library Perfectad at Last, ‘The News of the City in Brief. Our city council should wake up to the fact that the most deplorable con- dition that any city can be placed in is to have its paper begging on the market, and during the next six wroks of their existence, if possible, redeem our credit. Last spring, when they took charge of the city government, the city paper was worth dollar for dollar, but it does look as if by the time they are called upon to deliver affairs into the care of their successors the same paper won't be worth over fifty cents on the dollar, Thero is one way we can escape this financial condition, and that is by the council passing a resolution to consolidate the special and general funds, as they were previous to the last meeting. THE BANKER'S DAUGHTER. The Clifford combination company opened a week's engagement at Doha- ny's on Monday evening to a crowded house. peared No company has cver ap here that has given more satisfaction. Tho play presented, “The Banker's Daughter” is no doubt one of the most interesting so ciety plays upon the boards. With Miss Olive Weat the audienco was happily disappointed, she far exce ex ations, Miss West is pleasing adtress, with a well trained voice, and presented the character of Lillian to the entire satisfaction of her hearers, Fanny Mathias, as Florence St. Vincent Brown, maid, wife and idow, took the house by storm, and will be a favorite while the company remain here. G. Washington Phipps and Brown the retired millionaire, as personated by Theo, Stark, were nim]!l? mmense. The acting ..r Ed win Clifford, H. A. Ellis and W. B, Arnold, was very fine, in fact, wo be- lieve that the entire company is a sel ect one, EESOUE'S MASQUERADE To-night at Bloom & Nixon's hall the Rescues will carry out their long cherished plans of furnishing to the people of Council Bluffs and vicinity the grandost entertainment of the sea son in the shape of a masquerade ball. S0 if you should see hideous looking objects prowling about the streets af- ter dark to-night don’t be frightened, but go to the 'fmll where you will seo hundreds of them. A SCARE. On the Northwestern road, betwoen Cresent City and Honey Creck sta- tions, some person has erected a large sign, which Las written on it, *‘Look out for small-pox,” or words to that effect, and it is a well known fact that partios traveling west, intending to get off at this point, are afraid to do 80 This matter should be actended to by our city authorities and this sign taken down without delay, DRIVING PARK MATTERS, The directors of the Driving Park, chosen at the annual meeting of the stockholders recontly held here, met as per call at the oftice of Dr. A, B, McKune Monday evening, and elect- ed the following officers for the ensu- ing year: L. C. Baldwin, pl‘uuulull!‘. J. W, Peregoy, vice-president; Dr. A. B. McKune, secretary; Henry lm- man, treasurer; N. M. Pusey, attor- ney. L. C. Smith, of this city, the well known porter of the Ogden house, be- longs the honor of capturing the sneak thief, L. A. Forest, charged with stealing &75 in cash and an overcont from the hotel. Smith followed the ra to Sioux City, where he found him enjoying a first class meal, at the Hubbard house, as big as anybody with §75 and a fine outside garment Smith spotted him and then went out and calling in McDonald, the sheriff, pointed him out s the object of his search, [HKEE DRUNKS, There were three plain drunks at police headquarters yesterday, off - of qorrowed capital no doubt, as not one of them had a cent wh L taken in, MARRIAG residence of ton avenue, mah, Neb., Last Sunday, at the PERSON J. Browning came over from Omaha yesterday, and if they had scraped their boots before they left home we would have been spared considerablo oxtra mud in front of the Ogden hotel. Mitchell Vincent, of Chicago, laced his upright autograph on the Ogden rogister yesterday. SOME REMARKS, The local of our morning contem- porary is delighted to devote a half or an entire column to the narration of some crime. But when a citizen comes boldly to the front with herce and manly denunciations for them, the paper dovotes one and a half lines in alluding to the discourse the fol- lowing morning. A few days ago Kdith Gray, a prostitute, shot at her man in our streets, A full column of the paper was taken up in placing the incident before the readers of that paper. On Sunday evening the pas- tor of the Baptist chuch delivered an eloquent and forcible discourse in the Mothodist church, denouncing the crime and the cause that led to it, and all others committed within our city, The church was crowded. Hun- dreds wore turned away, and yet in one leading daily no report is found of this lecture, but simply noticed n passing, “Why is this wherefore?” Why do they do so. Love Your Neighbor. .
