RICHES IN ROCKS. New and Valuable Finds in the Dusky Gulches of Dakota. A Tremendous Boom in Traffic--A Post Trador's Greed Brings Him to Grief Correspondence of The Bee. Ravio Crry, B, H., Januay 2. The prospects hereabouts look ex. ceedingly flattering. The mines at Galena are being rapidly developed, and are now generally believed to be the best in the Black Hills, some of the ore yielding hundreds of dollars to the ton. New discoveries have also been made at several points be- tween here and Galona, a distance of about nine miles, some of the ore yielding from twenty to thirty cents to the pound of rock. Consequent upon these discoveries and the boom which has already set in, ¢ new four- horse daily stage line has been estab lished between this point and Galena by Messrs. Ingalls & Dickley, and dry ain and hay leave here to the amount of dollars’ worth & day for that camyp. Our town is rapidly groving in popu- lation and business importance, ‘inso much that a new boot and shoe store slished by J. C. McMil- and planing mill by goods, greceries, & hundreds of has been e len, & new gris A. D. Steward, and a new church by the Catholic denomination. The Cath- oiles also propose to have a new school at this place. We have hotels and restaurants by Mrs, Hammond and Mrs. J. C. Elsner, J. Scollard and William N. Pierson; two blacksmith shops by Messrs. Boehm and McCauley severally; a general store by Wm. Harmon & Co.; a jew elry store by Charles G. Ingalls, and a drug store by Dr. H. P. Lynch, and news depot by Allen Daguett. The Great Northwestern express stage and transportation company its headquarters outside the hills at this point and will doubtless start a transter for Galena freight from here early in the spring. Stephen Trim keeps a first-class wholesale and retail liquor establish- ment, and liquid refreshments ave \lso elegantly dispensed by Miller, Es., at “Tom Miller’s s J The livery businoss is represented by Mic Springle. Our professional men are but two, viz.: Drs. Lynch and Pratt. Telephone communication has re- tly been established with Fort Meade and by way of Deadwood with the rest of the world. Considerable interest is just now felt in the investigation which 1s be- ing prosccuted concerning chariges which have been preferred to the sec- tary of war against W, S. Faushawe, post trader at Fort Meade, D. T. Fanshawe is said to have waged con- stant war upon prominent men and the business interests of this town; hence the charges. He is accused therein of having stolen §55 from one McGinty, who kept a house of ill fame near camp J. G. g)tu.rgm, about three years ago and before the establish- ment of Fort Meade, and who at the time of the theft was gambling in Fanshawe's place of business. " He is also accused of selling to the govern- ment several hundred tons of con- demned and utterly worthless hay upon his contract instead of good hay which his contract called for; of sell- ing liquor contrary to the ordera of the president of the United States and of the post commander; of sellini liquor without the necessary licenso provided for by the revenae laws, in vast and unlimited quantitics; of at tempting to bribe the post council of administration, and of various other irregularities. ~ This trader enjoys the exclusive privilege of trading at the company post of Kort Meade, and with immunity from terri- torial and county taxes and licenscs he can pinch out and within all busi- ness which falls beneath his blightin shadow and it is oniy the superior business locatio of this town at the junction of the stage and freight roads that has enabled it to live at all, Tt would seem, therefore, that he cnulll have aftforded to content himself with hie Jegitimate business; but prosperity makes men greedy. After the aboli- tion of post sutler it was contended by partie interested that it was ne- cessary for the benefit of the overland emigrants that stores should be estab- lished and protected by the ment on national highway with this view that post tradershif were established. But there isno ex- cuse for these traderships with speci privileges and immunities within on 1" T. The employes of the Lincoln Globe (now detunct) are having a big timo in obtaining their back wages, and as the affair has been put into the hands of attorneys, it will go where all other good things go.
