OCARRIAGES AT THE CAPITAL. Some of the Eqn\’mg!) Which May Be Seen in Washington A correspondent writes from the capital as follows: The landau is the most popular vehicle in Washington, as 1t can be casily changed from an open to a closed carriage, and nearly every Senator owns one. The hand somest belongs to Don Cameron, who has & team of dark bay horses. Mrs. Senator Miller goes out shopping, r driving in a pretty little coupelette, which is the envy of those less fortimate. Senators VanWyok and Grover both have fine teams and lardaus, and are talking about adding saddle horses to their stables. Senator Johnston, of Virginia, is also partial to a landau. Senators Morriil and Bayard own the bay teams and landaus in which they take their after-dinuner airing, while Senator Edmunds not only ownsa bay team and a landau but has two saddle horses beside Senator Pendleton has a private stable stocked with four horses, two bays and two blacks. He keeps an English landau and his coachman wears a handsome livery. Represen- tative Wood, who has made millions by the manufacture of his patent mowing machine, hasan establishment that will not be eclipsed during the coming season. He owns a dog-cart in which he drives a pair of handsome bays in tandem. The gold-mounted harness for this team cost £00 alone. He has an English landau witha laige bay team. These horses are also ar- rayed in gold-mounted harness which cost 8650. Besides all this he keeps a horse to pull a handsome coupe. Representative Russell, another mil- lionaire manufacturer, drives a stylish pair of horses and has an elegant iamluu. Representative Robeson, formerly Secretary |110 Navy, keeps two horses, a victoria®and two landaus one for day use and one for night. He uses the victoria when riding on the avenue, and handles the reins him- self. His well-known face and figure make him a conspicuous object to strangers promenading on the avenue. Representative Archie Bliss loves a good pair of trotters perhaps as well as any other member of the lower house. He drives a pair of black mares and does not like to be behind any- body on the road. President Arthur has a commodious carriage and a pair of light-stepping horses, but he pre- fers to take a dashing drive in the suburbs in his wagon and fast trotter which was my Lord Roscae's favorite way of taking the air. David Davis rides in a Herdic or a horse car, but is contemplating the purchase of a one-horse coupe. The army officers have all good horses, which are fed at public expense. Ex-Congressman Alley drives a pair of fine horses to a landau and paid 8600 for the harness. Dr. Lorit also the possessor of a hand- some team, and sometimes goes out in a coupe and sometimes in a buggy. The Tin Wedding of a Ute Chief Laramic Boomerang. Last evening a very enjoyable affair took place at the residence of Shavano on Yaller Dog avenue, corner of Cay- ote street. Yesterday being the tenth anniver- sary of the nuplmh of Mr. and Mrs, Shavano, invitations were given o all the hon ton Ules on the reservation to be present at the tin wedding. Arrangements were made also for the attendance of the Pappoose String band, and refreshments were to be furnished by the Ute Delmonico, Slim-Jim-with-the-Chawed-Ear. At an early hour the palatial wig- wam was ablaze with government can- dies, and candelebra made to repre- resent antique oyster caus filled with hot lard and_lighted by means of a cotton rag of the time of Henry the VIIL. So perfect the imitation that the eye was deceived at once by the rustic d Ranged about the spacious tepee were settees, consisting of quaint buf- falo artistically decorated in the rade art of the Indian, with buckskin fringe and Michael Angelo fleas. Hereand there upon the walls might be seen aboriginal sketehes of Moses in the bullrushes, and oil paintings taken from peach cans of the time of Queen Anne. Costly tapestries of oriental cobwebs, and smoke-tanned frescoes, with here and there dash id, grease, were of color laid on with a wmaster al d done in oil and axie everywhere seen. Tu the full blaze of the respendent candelebra,. and the fragrance from the tropical ham which shed its soft, geductive odor upon the ravished senses, the scene seemed like a vision of loveliness taken from some fairy tale. Shortly after 8 o'clock the gucsts began to arrive, and before 9 all the able-bodied Utes of the reservation bad gathered within the hospitable corral of Mr, and Mrs, Shavano, The fr: ice seemed more and more seductive as the multitude of guests became more numerous and contiguous, Al t there was a wild burst of music from the Pappoose string band, and the warriors of the party each gaily secured a partner and began to dance, like the man who steps on a carpet tack in the middle of the night. Toward midnight, the prompter, Red- Dog-With-a-Peeled-Snoot, announced that the gentlemen would secure part- ners for a scalp quadrille. On form- ing, however, it was found that no scalp had been provided. The leader of (,m orchestra, however, stated that he knew where one could be obtained, and would only detain them a fow moments. He came back in a short time with the scalp of a presiding elder who had come to the agency for his health. It wasn't a very good scalp, but time was precious, The costumes were striking, yet in- cxpensive. Shavano was wrapped in thought. His wife was clad in the game simple costume. The envy and admiration of the evening was the costume of Soft-Eyed Centipede, a cross-eyed half-breed maiden with a complexion like an old calf-skin po boo Her complexion and the scar of a once flagrant boil on the back of her neck, constituted her cos- tume 0ld Goggle.Eyed Pestilen e wore a gold collar-button, tied about his neck with & piece of I-...wlml bacon rind. His nnn, The Prairie Dog with-a- stomach-like-a-grist-mill, wore a pair of red suspenders, but later in the evening he removed thew to show that he was not proud. Space forbids a full mention of all T lll' OMAHA IL\[LY BEE: 'I‘IH'I‘\I)AY I)l CEMBER 13, THE KENDALL PLAITING MACHINE' AN T DRESS-MAKERS' COMPANION. the articles presented by admiring friends, but a more enjoyable hurrah was never participated in by a more highly delighted mob of rustic inebri atcs than the one mentioned. Shavano and his estinable wife bade adieu with reluctance to their grateful and intoxicated guests at late hour, while all united in wishing many happy anniversavies to the ostensibl husband and wife, An Indian Shorn of His Locks The River Press of Montana gives rount of the shearing of ar. Indian chief: When Sheriff Healey went north recently after the Indian thieves who had en the horses of Harrison Bros id others from the Yellow stone, he brought back with him a Blood Indian, known as Bad Bull, as a hostage, supposedly, for the return of the lost horses and guilty Indians. 1t was not pretended that Bad Bull had anything to do with stealing the horses, he was simply held as a hos- tage. On Monday morning the sher- ift, accompanied by some frieuds, en- tered the jail for the purpose of set- ting the Indian free. Soonthey were joined by Mr. Bryer, the tonsorial ar- tist, and notwithstanding ,his protests and piteous appeals, his long biack hair was soon clipped, and Bad Bull, like Sampson of old, was shorn of his pride and strongth, When it was learned what had been done indigna- tion ran high among our citizens. In every quarter the act was pronounced a foolish, blunde To any one who will stop to think of the probable resylts, it must =0 appear. 3ad Bull would almost as soon lose his scalp as his hair. The loss of the latter means deep disgrace and humil- ation. It wonld be impossible, without taking his life, to do him a greater injury. He returns to his tribe disgraced and will remaiu in dis- grace until he wipes out the stain in blood. If he were to come back and take vengeance on our funuy sheriff it might not be so bad. But he willnot do that. kill a white man he will do ir, and Bad Bull is just the kind of an In- dian to delight in vengeance of this character. Some of the scttlers on our northern frontier may be the victims. No one knows. But mark the prediction, Bad Bull, unless his earthly carecr is shortly closed, will be heard from. We warn our readers on the northern outskirts to beware of him, the following ac A Statemont From the Mayor. Mok, Tur, July 14, 1881, H. H. The Toronto Globe is not an ad- mirer of the Canadian Pacific prise. In a recent issue 1t gives ex- pression to its feelings as follows As it is, the people must pay § 000,000 in cash for the line—8! 000,000 ot cash subsidy to the syndi- cate, and 833,000,000 cash for those sections to be completed by the gov- ornment. Theymust also givethesyn- dicate §50,000,000 worth of land, which the government could have bonded at least as advantangeously as the syndicate. Mr. Fleming estimated that the sections which the syndicate will complete would cost 845,500,000; therefore the country is to pay $26,- 500,000 on account of running ex- penses. Does any one suppose that more than $26,500,000 would have Dbeen required for that purpose under a different arrangement’ In the cost of building the road Canada has gained nothing; in the cost of running | it she has lost something, Butthat isa mere bagatelle to the total loss by the bargain. Such a policy s been followed with great succens hy the government of India in regard to roads that, on_completlon, had pros- pects. nothing like so good as those of the Canadian Pacific. But we have not stated all the losses yet. A com- pany of private money-makers hay ceived power to monopolize north- western traflic; to hinder the con- struction of independent lines: to lord it over the territories; to hold n vast area of land speculatively; to bulldoze municipalities wanting railway facili- ties; to build up this town and de- stroy that, Inevery future year the people will have to” pay more to the ympany than they would have been called on to pay for the road, and for- ever they will have to pay enorntously for liberty to use the road, though they will never get a dollar fruln it. would still have been the prop the people. i got an ng it Tho t ever-incre: leas Gcrflflnnw “T have used Brrnock with great henefit for nulv,,u- stipation of the bowels,” L.
