R The Goout Tells Abiwt Reighim Young's Airest by Gem Harney Detrolt Froe Press “You must have secn connidi rable of Gen Custer during your hfe nthe frontio " remurked the reporer i quirivgy, we the scout lighted his pipe and sow ed hinmedf opposice *Yea, I wua with hs command e casi nally from the vime he came to the piaium ur til the time of his death 1 worked for hiw but very litle wh & scout or guide, but hunted for him at various thines | was at the Roses bud rgency at the time he was minsaa cred He was a good Tndian fighter, was he noi?” Tbat depends upon what geu mean by a ‘good Indian tight; Ho wan a very brave wan, but a raally brave man, 1donot think the Tntian was ever born whom Custer waa afeaid of He appenred *o take perfeot delight in expomug himaelf to danger, and ofte times when there was 1o use or senae in hinno doinvg. He used to halt hia eommaid at sight of Indians, and himself nde forward to reconunoiter He would ride up 8o near them that they could open fire on him and then he wou'd turn in his saddle, swing his hat for the troops to come on, and, without waiting for them to come up with him, vut spurs to his horse and dash down upon the Indians with the bullets fairly raining around him. “Now such fighting as that wins for an officer the name of being very brave, but I call 1t foolhardiness, When he made such a charge as that he knew absalutely nothing of what danger menaced him. There might be fitty Indians in ambush in front of him, or there might be 500, and for aught he know he might be leading his command to certain destruction. 1t is all very well for a man to go out and make a target of himself for In dians to shoot at, but it is sheer reck- leseness. Anybody who thinks the Indians are not good marksmen, is mistaken. They are continually practicing. and (vay have the bost of arms, most of them having ropeating ritles. Custer seemed te think he bore a charmed life. T haye heard that he d that the Indian didn't live who could hit him. “Now, my idea of a brave man and good Tudian fighter is one who first ascertaing the strength of the enemy, ad then, if he thivks he can win, ukes the attack with coolness and judgment. Then let him show his bravery by fighting like the devil. Tn my opimon it is poor generalship for a connmanding officer to needle sly put himselt in a position to be shet at the very outset of an engagemeut, and thus take a chance of leaving his command without its leader. 1fto be afraid of notning, is to be brave, Cus- ter was the bravest of the brave. Harney was the best mulitary leader for the plains I ever met. He was cool and deliberate in his braveness, but was alion in a fight.” ““When were you with him?” “I was with him at the time of the Mountain Meadow massacre, and I went to Salt Lake City with him when he went down there to interview Brigham Young. Now there was an incident connected with that trip that I do not think was then reported, or has ever been written up. It shows the kind of a man Harney was.” ““Tell me about it.” “When we heard about the massa- cre, he sent scouts to find out who the murderers were, and when they re- ported to him that they were Mor- mons, off he went with his entire command for Salt Lake city, swearing every rod of the way that he would hang the murderers if he had to hang every Mormon in Utah. He in- tended to give Brigham Young twenty-four hours to surrer.der up the murderers, and unless this was done Latter Day Saints would be mighty scarce around there. Before we reached Salt Lake City a messenger overtook us with orders from the war department tor Harney to return to camp; that the civil authorities would attend to the massacre business. Then you ought to hear the old man swear. He damned the government enough to sink it. Inever met a man who could swear more violently than Har- ney. ‘‘He thought the matter over for a little while, and then declared that he had started for Salt Lake City and he would go there if he was court-mar- tinled and ‘shot for it. And he went, too; and if the war department ever beard of it no action was taken. We camped a short distance outside the city and atayed a few days to give the animals s rest, and they needed it sadly, for we had traveled fast. The morning thut we started back to Vuma, a young girl, about 17 or 18 yeara old came out to the camp and applied to Brady, the train master, to help herescape. Her pare.ts we English, who h»d joined the Mor- mons not long before, and one of the elders wanted to marry her. Her parents were trying to force her to this polygamous marriage, and she could only avoid it by running away She bad an uncle and aunt in Francisco, and to them she wanted to 2o, Brady wasu’t the man to ray ‘no’ under such circumstances, and Lo put heraway in the flour wugon by piling the burrel avound her iu such way that she conldn’t be scen from cith end. Wo hadn't gone far befor dozen Mormous overteok us, the g father being along with thom, and they went through that train until they found the girl. After they gou her out she turned to Brady and bade him good-bye, at the same time thank- ing him for trying to help her. That, of course, gave him dead away, and the Mormons arrested him for kidnapping the girl, and away they all went toward the city. Harney saw that there was something wrong with the train, and back came a mes- senger to see what was the matter. As soon as Harney was informed of what had occurred, he ordered the tramn to halt and stay there until he got back, and, swearing worse than boforc, away heand all the troops went for the Mormons, They had a long start on him, however, and reached the city first. Do you sup pose Harney stopped when ho reached | the city! Nota bit of it. Right up| the main street ho went at a| gallop, and when ho jumped from | his horse and cried ‘Halt! it was right in front of Brigham's office. There was a guard on duty there with & musket and fixed bayonet, but as he brought his weapon to a charge, Har- ney gave ita kick that turued the guard half way round, and the next |wetant he was disarmed. Harney strode into the cffico with a half dozen soidiers wt his hools, and two minutes later Brgham was astradcle of a Lorse sud galloping down the street in the centor of @ troop of cavalry “It was fun to see the Mormons stare aa they saw the old man w such company, but befora they eould have e to act we were out of tho oty About five miles cut Harney ordered » halt, and 1t wasn't long before a lot of Mormons came riding up a8 faat as their horaes could carry them. Whey they got up within sound of his viice, Hurney ordered them to halt or ho would fire _on them, and they halted. Then he ordered Brigham to tell them 1o g back to the city and bring Brady and the girl back with them, and asid he to Brizham: ‘If they are not here mside of two hours T'll il your car caan tull of government lead ! “You don't dare to,’ says Brig “‘Why ——— you,' says Harney, Tl shoot you myself “‘Loung before the two hours were ap, Brady and the girl werethere, and when we got to Yuma Harney sent a uard with her to San Bernardino, on s(mr way to San Francisco. P Chronicle The forbidding aspect of the front row of attorneys in Judge Rix's court yesterday morning was somowhat modified by the smiling face of Laura De Force Gordon. The champion of woman's rights represented one C. M., McKay, who was charged with hav ing unlawfully appropriated a silver watch worth 25, the property of a pale and nervous youth named J. M Willisma, The prospect looked very black for McKay until the modern Portia shook her radiant curls and leveled an intimidating forefinger and Jead pencil at the complaint. *You let the defendant have the loan of the watch,” said the champion of distressed woman, The witness cast a terrified glanco at Judee Rin, and receiving no on- couragement from the court, blurted out: “*Yes, mom,"” “‘And there was no specified time for the defendant to return the watch,” said the medium-haired advocate. “*No; but “Don’t ‘but’ me, sir. There was no ied time. "’ N-n-no, mum.’ “‘And you saw the defendant w the watch, and did not protest agai his doing 80 7" Gl “Don’t ‘I' me, eir.” Prosecuting Attorney Blaney, with his characteristic gallantry, was about to remark that the prisoner could not help eyeing the fair advocate, but she shut him off with a prompt repetition of the assertion: ‘“‘You did not protest, sir?” ““N-no, m'm.” “Nor ask him for the watch?” “N'um.” “Nor tell him you would have him arrested?” “N-nn'm.” “The case is dismissed,” said his honor, decisively. The champion of woman’s right to browbeat unhappy witnesses gathered up her books and swept out of the court, sweetly smiling her acknowl- edgement of the compliment to her sox.
