A | 4 § A # ' . ) O MU THE BOISE BASIN. Glimpses at the Old-Time Fa- mous Mining Region “Last Ditch"” of the Argonants, Idaho City corees. of San France 1t is hard to imagine anything more 0 Chron beautiful and picturesque than the Boise basin during the autumn weather. Riding from Idaho City over to Quartzburg, up hill one minute and down dale the next, you cross an exvanse of country very much like the rice from Grass Valley to Dutch Flat, in California, as the old road used to go through the mining camps of Little York and You Bet. 1 the rents and tares in the gorgeous tobo of Nature, made by eighteen years of placer mining, have not been able to detract from the beauty of the drive. Tall and som ber pines line the crests of the hills, that gracefully undulate about you, recalling Bayard Taylor's verse: Thy human children shall restorathegracs Gone with thy fallen pines The wild, barbaric beauty of thy face Shall rouud to classic lines. Moore's creck, on which Tdaho City is located, has been mined for a dis tance of nearly sixteen miles almost continuosly. Every foot of ground that was worked paid enormously, but provisions were so high from 1864 to 1865 that many wood pieces of ground were neglected, Just because they only prospected $5 per ¢ to the hand These diggings were soon covared up with tail from the richer claims, until they are how thirty feot under the debris on the average. Marion Moore was tho discoverer of these diggings, and he aftorwards was killed in & strect fight (arranged by speculators for his especial benefit) at Silver City. At first there were two villages on the creek, one about a mile below the other, and both built of log houses. The upper was called Bannock City and the lower Buena Vista Bar. After the great fire of 1865 the tormer town was rebuilt lower down the creek and called Idaho City. The upper remnant of old Ban- nock, near the mouth of Bear run, was then known as Logtown. and stands to-day, a sad relic of departed wealth and prosperity. A BED-ROCK FLUME. The only thing that could make moncey plentiful in this place would be a bed-rock flume, but the great dif- ficulty would be in getting the ight of way from everybody. Somoe fow men would sell, and gladly, too, while others would want such prices fortheir claims as would be an actual prohibi- tion of the enterprise. It would cost £1,800,000 to put in the flume all the way from the head of the reck to its junction with Grimes’ creck, and about another million to where it would dump the boulders into Boise river. There are scores of acres that would pay £5 to the hand per day, now covered up with slickens and cobbles, and there must be tons of lost quicksilver and amalgam in the depis of that slum, a’ reminder of the caréless and slipshod mining of former days. Not less than five mil- lions of dollars could be taken out of there in three years, but 1 fear the capital to work “this is not forthcom- ing. The delegate to congress, Hen. George Ainslie, has been endeavoring to get congre sional legislation on this subject, but without avail. Grime’'s creek is a tributary of Moore's creek, and has paid nearly as well. It takes its name from a proneer prospector who was murdered there by the Indnians in 1864 A high ridge divides _it from Moore’s creek, and from the top o' that ridge I caught the most magnificent view that my eyes had beheld since I stood on the top of Cape Horn and looked down at the American river. Below me lay a broad valley nearly as wide as Tone. Here worcfseveral little ham- lets, Centerville, ( City, Placor- villo and Quartzburg, although tie latter stands so deep ina ravin that we could only recognize its locali ty by the escaping steam from the hoisting works, Ripped aud rent in every direction by the “‘giants” and “monsters,” this expuisito valley still maintained its classic contour and smiled swectly in the glow of the rich, sensous autumn sunset. But for man’s love of gold it would yet have been one of the fairest untcuched vales of each, QUARTZ MINING A VAILURE, There has been a failure of quartz mining in this part of Idaho, except in a single instance. And yet there is no good reason why men should be the case, for therc must be a fountain- head for all the gold that has been taken out of Moore mes’ creeks in the past cighteen years, My thicory of it is that the people of this section, disgusted at the swindling manner in which the stock-sharpers had manag dges, resolved to m\ulu- the aid of castern capital and “‘jumped from the tryi g-pan into the fire.” The New York and Boston Crassuses invariably seut sut some of their masculine Pinafore relatives to superintend the mincs, when in reality they could have better af- torded to intrust their inte men they never saw. I can show you a “hole in the ground” from which $126,000 was taken out in two years, of which $120,000 was brought out by w poor crippled Irishman now in Idaho City in eight moutns; and the other 86,000 in sixteen months by the nephews, cousins and uncles of the New York directors, Candidly, T think the miues of Ida- ho have suffered more detriment from this cause than any other. And as long a8 & quartz mine pays a profit of 50 cents per ton it i8 & very nice thing to have, and the very moment it lacks five cents per ton of paying ex- 1ses it1s a pest and a puisance astern mine owners who have in yested hece would have done well had they been born orphans or remained bach , for reasons cited above. Had the bonanza kings been punished for their thievery aad® the eastern greenhorns been out of quartz ventures, under- ground mining and milling would have become, by this time, one of the learned ]mvi.-muuu, und placed on a par with theology. But the case stands about as I say, and as we had no hand in the creation of the evil under which we labor, we are equaliy powerlum to duvue reu\edlel lurlhem ot kept | road compa THE otly Tapsing into a Rip Van Winkle GARDEN VALLEY On the other side of a high ridg which separates tho waters of Granite and Grimes' creeks from the river, lies Gardon valle In wanderings over the Pacifi slope T have seen no summer resort to surpass this lovely nook. The pines come sloping down to the ..|L\ of the crystal stream, where the silv trout snaps at the gaudy buttertly llu' clanging wild fow] weer in their flight and alight to nest in the grassy mead ows, the timid deer steals away from his mossy bed on the mountain side to drink of the ice-cold river For a week of recreation in July T cannot imagine a_more delightful camping ground than Garden valley. The whortleberry hangs its delicate cups ot pink over my blankets; the i lights up the crest ailes withher white blossoms, and the columbine nods her scarlet towers in the pure moun tain breeze. The argonauts of 49 halted and made a rally in this basin, like the broken columns of the old guard rallicd at Waterlon. A few, and a very few indeed, aro wealthy, and enjoy a semi-metropolitan hfe the territorial capital. But the most of Payette all my the great hearted young giants have died off; some naturally; others in street afitays or barroom fights. Idaho has witnessed the wreck of some of the broad.chested fel lows who built up the Shasta and Siskiyoutowns. A fow poor old men hang around the Dbasin towns and work about four months in the year, and there they sit, awaiting rest and the end of the earth. Will the world ever again behold such a race? 1 thina not. Tdaho to-day is more California than Calitornia herself. The ¢ tenderfoot” is yet in the minoer- ity, but the time is coming when he and the “Jack Mormon” will be tramping on the Argonaut’s grave, and when that day does come, may 1 not be here to se M. Outrageous frauds have been perpe- trated upon many of the settlers and homesteaders of the State of Nebraska. We will not say who the responsible parties are, but that some one 18 re- Many farmers after spending years of toil are being compelled to abandon their homes without any compensation whatever and that contrary to the Act of Con- gress of 1864 that them their grant and in violation of the Act of Congress of 1876, which was intended to settle the dispute betweor. the sot- tlers and the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad Company by declaring that the right of the company attach- ed at the date of the withdrawal of the land from market. The Supreme Court of the United States of America also declared that the land must be selected before any right can attach thereto. That the Company so understood this grant is evident from the selections that they made in list one. In said list they exempted over thirty thousand acves knowing it to have been covered by pre-emption or homestead entry. When this list of land was selected it i found that it had the accompanying certiticate duly certifying that those lands were vacant aud unappropristed and having been eutered. Now it is seen from the exemption and the ceriificate that accompanied the withdrawal that the compauy well undorstood their granting act and acted in good faith. But when they returned in a number of vears after- ward and attempt to claim such Jands, telling the settler thereon that their right was attaehed June 15th, 1875, we ask them why thoy did not select those tracts of Jands when they made their first selection, and ask the with- drawal of them at that date instead of yeurs after! We find upon cxamination of the records that a iarge quantity of the land from whicl this railroad company is ejecting the sottlers is said to have been selected from 1874 until 1375, after the settlers have been liviug on them from three to five years. We find farther that list No. 5 con- taining the lands selected in 1874 and 1875 is without the certificate such a3 accompanied list N - hich they declare the ant and sponsible is evident. yave nds to be unappproprinted, and when at Wash- ington and in the interior depart- ment, and in the railroad division of that department when we inquired into this matter, we were told that they assigned the railroad company these lands because they were in odd gections and within twenty miles of the road and that the right of the company attached June 1oth, 1805 again if this was all that was necessary with list No. 5, why they required the certificate with list No. 1, and omitted it with list No. b, And farther if the clerks in the de- partment were the legally authorized agents to make selections for the B, & M. railvoad company, why not act asagents with list No 1. Tae reason for this is obvious: list No. 1 was in keeping with the acts of congress and in compliance with the rules and regu- lattons of the department in selecting Jands not otherwise appropriated while list No. b embraced many tracts of land which were exempted by list 1 because of valid pre-cmption and homestead entri thereon, upon which settlers were living and had been living for years when list No. b was said to have been selected, Now the Burlington & Missouri River rail claimed that their right 16th, 18G5, to all the :d sections within twenty attached Ju odd numbe miles of the line of eaid road. If this be true we ask them why they did not select the entirety of these sections in list No. 1 instead of waiting a number of years and selecting the parts of sections that were uxelupwd in list No. 1, but in- 2ydnd in Net Na £7 This is nnp 4 m, for in only evic | only | myself made \ | ity as hey \\\H\«ll 1e northwest section twenty-one or 1 od me they did ne stated that the United office would know all about it; we asked again if they did not own lands in 1870 how they came to own them in 1874, after having been entered by others, Agam wo ask why the de partment canceled the claima of many of the parties who had entered lands under the rulings and regulations of the department years aftor their entry was made! Would it not have been better to have said to them that these lands belonged to the company at that time than to have taken their money and their years of toil and compelled them to abandon their homes without any compensation. The Supreme Court of the United States has said that the grant to the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad Company is & grant without Iateral limits and that land may be taken at any distance from the road £o that it taken in equal quantities upon each side of the road, and farther that the nd must be selected and withdrawn before any rvight can attach thercto Now, as there are large quantities of land given to the Burlington & Mis- souri River Railroad Company without selection and were set apart for their use when gettlors were already living thereon, wo therefore ask that Con gress investigate this matter and re store to us our rights H. A Mexican brought a burro to town to-day and anchored it in front of a plaza store where there isa mu- sical clork on tap. The burro quietly listened to the alleged music for time and then began to sweat under the pad. As the discord waxed stronger his soul was stirred to its ut- most depths. He seemed to catch on to the tune, and as it floated out on the chill Deccember air ecenca of his clildhood’s home over on the Teco- lote floated before his mental vision, Opening his feed receiver he gave way to a burst of songs which, joined with the music of the store clork, created such harmony us is seldom produced but by the blending notes of a horse fiddle and the Las Vegas tire com- pany.
