They are intended for the streams in the north- country, and will be put in at different places. Asis well known, the California salmoen, unlike the salmon trout, is a migratory fish, and each year after the first the journey to tho sea and back again s made. The present experi- ment in pisciculturo which is being made by the fish commissioners of this state, is an espocially enteresting one. It seems almost incredible that the instinct of the fish should lead them to forsake the small mountain stream in which they are placed, follow it to the mouth, where its waters empty mto the turbid channel of the Mis- souri, thence down the big muddy to tho Mississippi and finally to the blue depths of the Gulf of Mexico. But the more ditlicult thing to be- lieve is that the young salmon, after fattening for a time in the salt water, should bo able to find its way again into the swift current of the ‘“‘father of waters,” ascend a thousand miles again to the Missouri’s muddy mouth and swin through tho latter's turbid waters and over its many sand-bars to the mouth of the pavent stream, and finally find the very place it first knew as home, and where it will remain long enough to breed and spawn What & journey ! Three thousand miles and return ! But the fish com- missioners believe that the salmon they are now “‘planting” will success- ully accomplish it, and say that a few years will find all the headwaters of the state plentitully stocked with the gamoy, delicate luxury for which Cali- fornia and Oregon streams have so long bnon famous. sung salmon are the product gus wero placed about two - A World of Good.
