Soon after the L heard steps about the house and a moment later a heavy body fell against the house with such torce as to jar it considerably. Mrs. Rockenfield was of course fright- encd and awoke her husband, who looking around saw nothing. In the morning a pair of torn pants was found, in the pockets being a couple of faro chips, studs, tobacco, a hand- kerchief with the laundry number on, a ‘)une containing §1.15 and some other things, all of which the owner can have by proving property. It is supposed the pants were stolen by a thief who got drunk and lost them in the yard as stated. A BIG FI Probably the biggest fine ever im- posed and collected in the police court of this city was that assess=d by Judge Beneke yerjerday on a man named Frank Reed. Reed, it appears, was arrested about two weeks ago, when he gave the name of Adams, He had at the time about 800 in his possession. Monday he wus at the opera house with a friend when he was arrested by the police on the charge of being & sus- picious character. He had when searched about $467 still remaining in his possession, and yesjorday, failing to satisfy the court that he had a visible meaus of support, he was fined 0 and sen- tenced to ten days in the county jail. The amount of the fine and costs was deducted from his pile which was then returned to him.The man is we understand not disposed to submit to the action of the court and a writof habeas corpus will probably be sworn out to secure his release. The burning building made a big blaze in the darkness of carly morning, but when streams were got on from the ad joining hydrants the fire was quickly drowned out. The entire roof was dostroyed and the house probably cannot be repaired. The actual dam- age will not exceed $300 and thereis a policy on the house for $200, in_the Glen Falls Insurance Co., of New York, represented in this city by Judge Weiss, which would not expire until April next. The probability is that in_ startin: the fire it was too sudden a blaze and set the chimuey on fire and, the sur- roundings being so dry some caught from the heat and resulted in the de- struc.ion of the property. = Humbugzed Again.
