* school, who claim that the COUHCIL BLUFFS Arrest of the Suspmrnd Murderer of 01 Man Sapp. A Case of Small Pox is Discov ered in the City. The Board of Hducation Hofd| a Lengthy Meeting. The Connoll Fail of a Quornm and Adjourn Until To-Night. The board of education met on Sat urds he oflice o t. Several o wero dis- | evening Aunglesworth on Pearl s matters of minor im, cussed, including the matter of dis- | missing and opening the schools, Mr Farnham stated to the board that the | schocl vl thori‘y, hat been commenced at 1:15 i of 1 o'clock. That in view of the sensi tiveness of some of the citizens in re gard to the amount of time the teach ers should devote in the school roc he did not feel like saring the sponsibility any longer, and asked the board to take such action in the prem- | ises as thoy deemed oxpodient. The gontleman, continuing, said that some fitteen of the citizens thought that if minutes cach were taken from schools the value thereof should be deducted from the teachers He thought that gramblers had a mistaken idea of the most of these work a teacher was ealled upon to do active that teachers outside of the school room in jon for its dutics, and propar the labors ot src confined to the six no first-class hours spent with the class. The board consented, during the winter months, to allow a continuance of the present fifteen minute rule. The committes appointed to investi gate the charges of brought against Miss Row New York, one of the the high school building, incompetency » Nye, of ssistants in reported as follows* The committee on teachers, includ itg superintendent, in reference to the complaint in the high school re ported tho following: We, the under signed committee, appointed to inquire into the school work being done by Miss Rowenn Nye, assistant teacher in the hig riment, would respectfully report that said complaint was originated by certam members of her classes. After hearing said com plaint and making such inquiries as we could to elicit the facts, we believe that the complaint was not well foun ed; that said teacher vossesses the re- quired knowledge of the branches taught in said school and that she is entitled to the full confidence of this board and of the school patrons, Geo. L. Farnuam, Jonx GREEN, E. E. ALesworrit, By the aboveit will by seon that Miss Nye has been completely vindicated, and the odium must fall upon her ac- cusers. It scems- that Miss Nye has been employed as a teacher but a short tin that she came here from the east; that having been given a position in the high school as assistant, a feeling against her at once sprang up, which originated, as is claimed, with some of the graduates of our high positions of asgistants should be divided between their number, One of the direct charges brought against Miss N that she failed in being a pr teacher of algebra, or what is termed *‘that peculiar kind of avith motic.” Somo of the class roported that the teacher did not unders herself the scienco she pretended to impart, This lod to considera. ble outside criticism, causing the young laly, who is almost a stranger here, to feel as if the public should be advised as to the trath or falsity of the ge. She demanded an inves tigation and an examination as to hoer fitness for tho position, For this pur- pose a committee was appointed con- sisting of two membersof tho board and the superintendent of our city schools, a man who, as a teacher and scholar, stands at the head of his pro- fossion. We congratulate Miss Ny that she has, in so thorough a manner, vindicated her professional ability to remain at the head of the school for which she was selected by the school board. G L. Jacobs presented a potition asking for additional pay. Mr. Farnhsm stated that Mr, Jacobs had a very large school and was o faithful teacher, Mr. Murphy thought it might bo well enough to allow him & per month extra pay as janitor, Then the question arose as to what the other §50-tenchers would say. . Mr. Murphy thought there should be no such thing as geade in the pay, but that each teacher should stand on his or her own *tad valorem.” Aylesworth didu’t know who Jacobs vas, but, was of the opinion that if it was the wan who rode to and from the Clarke school-house so constantly, on horseback, a good way for the board would by to allow tho horee the extra 8, It was finally voted to refer the matter to the committee on teachers to report at the next meeting, CHINESE 1 A PARTY, Quite a grand and unique affuir took place at the residence of Thomas Mot calf, on Second avenue, last Friday evening, given by the ].uh«-t of the “Industrial Guild,” a society organiz ed some time ago and at prosent com posed of the following members: Mrs. Thomas Metealf, Miss Eddie, teacher f James & | | ¢ st | uesti Kecline, Mrs. Robinson tors, Misses Jennie Oblinger, W, ¥ A sumptuous repast [ Kune, Mrs. Sapp, Jr.y and lady small cups and saucers, and a gentle mnan purchasing a supper for himself and wife lady can, if he | chooses, take four pieces of the dimin utiv le furniture away in his vest | s, after draining their contents tea, coffee, ond other edibles, [ there was served what Americans cal ut what amongst the Ori als i termed a ‘“rat tail” soup, Besid ussle, Ihese being Chinese tes take the latter was & most enjo, cluded with a TIE COUNCIL them did Friday night, to at tond to some very important business, | Ihe wayor was promptly Oa eall of the roll, only four re Churchill, ¢ nd | Dawson Unthank, Therot ( on motion of Churchally ad- | journed until , on which | they may take a ne the vote on the ne w expressed by the October this evenin ion t The coun cil have but a short time now to re deem thems s before the grand jury will take the cage in hand and them that it is a serious refuso to perform a sworn convines thing to duty. AN IMPOITANT ARREST, Deputy Sheriff J. W. Clatterback, who has been for some time on a still hunt for the murderer or murderers of old man Sapp, has succeeded finally in bagging tho wholo or part of his gamc, a8 ho thinks, A man by the namne of Sullivan, who is suspicioned of having had a hand in that riul tragedy, has been arrested by Mr. latterback and lodged in jail in this city. The arrest was made at Clarin- da, in Paze county. The man upon whom suspicion hag at lust rested is about 85 years of age. He was brought to this city yesterday morn- ing, and the corriders of the jail were filicd all day by excited and curious visitors to get a glimpse of tne man, )F SMALL- POX. A CASE Joln Crooks, who is presumed to havo the small-pox, is a brother of Dennis Crook, of Honey Creea, and 50 of Jackson Crooks, formerly fore man in the Omaha Smelting Works, The young man has been living in Idalio territory for some time, and re urning home on a visit and contracted the disease while on the train. When told by Dr. McCre Haxt the nature of his case, he much surprisec they we On ar- riving here he went “directly to the ssidence of Lis sister, Mrs. Burke. Weare informed the patie been removed from this city and that there is no reason to apprehend a further spread of the malady. AN UNCIVIL N R, A civil engineer assaulted an elderly man named Hopkins at Lantzendor- ter’s meat market on Main streot, on Saturday night. A third party inter- fered and knocked the engineer down. No arrest. FINE PHOTOGRATHS, A visit to the Excelsior gallery on Main strect will convince any one that Barkis is determined to keep in the front rank of the profession, This photographic establishment is one_of the most elaborate in the city. No pains or expense 18 spared to keep ev- erything in metro, olitan style. The are clegantly fitted out with thewost improved patterns of furni- ture and adorned with the most costly pictures, The manner of taking pic- tures is by the newly invented process known as the “instantancous gelatine bromide, The advantage over the old is the rapidity with which asitting is takon, enabling one to procure a pericet ikeness of c¢hildren which is very diflicult to obtain by the old and slow process. Not only are pictures produced, as it were, in a “flagh,” but the general contour hasa depth of beauty and dotail that the old process cannot afford, Mr. B, has been put to a groat deal of expense in furnish- ing his gallery with the plates and material that the new process requires, His enterprise should be appreciatod by our citizens. MINOR MENTION, On Saturday evening a couple of men tried to convince Charles J. Beckmen that a bogus £5 gold piece was genuine, but Beckmen was too sharp for them, and they will be obliged to try some one else, It takes one hundred men one day to raise our new grain elevator thirty inches, Muelles's new store is a fine sight All those who could afford to own or hire a team and were wicked enough romained out of church yes- torday and enjoyed the beautiful sun- shine.
