It will donbtless be the general im pression that there could have been| little, 1f any, gennine romance con nected with the notorious and vulg band of rastic thieves, known as the “Weolsh mountain - gang,” that was fi years ago by the arrest and sentence to long terms of imprisonment of its sontrolling apirits Mart, Abe, Joe, Tke and Jake Buzzard. But that this impression is incorreet, 1 think the following narrative, true as strange, will effectually prove. And_ here let me preface my story by saying that it does not seek to ex- cuse criminal adventure, but merely shows how the most may contain the linge virtue, which, under the divine foster- ing of woman's love, may ultimately kindlo and brighten into permanent and redeeming flame. The haunt of the Buzzard brothers and their companies was a strip of wild and barren backwoods country and forest lying along the borders Berks, Chester and - Lancaster coun- ties, in Pennsylvania, while rising out of a rocky and scrubonk streteh of bar- rens was Welsh mountain, which af forded dr e and secure [ hiding places, where the officers of | the Tuw seldom Wlhen the five Buzzards had beer run down and caged, the band, liviy for the most part in ated huts along the monutain side, | became scattered and disheartencd {for a few months, At I this time, they sucooasfully commanded by @ young, handsome and intelligent outlasy had theretofore been com; unknown in the vicinity. To his credit it must be added, how- ever, that his conduct to the young women was invariably, so far as was known, perfect]y honorable, Tt was in this way that, toward the close of his carcer in the capacity of robber-captain, he became acquainted with Ada Rheinbold, the only daughte of the wealthiest farmer inthe vicinity of Reading.
