During a period of about an hour in each afternoon three fast | lines leave Jersey City for Philadc phia, andZbe hetween and after them wa; ins are run to New Branswick or nearer points. The first thing Mr. Watts did was toputin the threads to represent these lightning expresses. These were all of one color, They were wound aronnd & pin at the minute of departure, and carried wn the board in a slanting direction to the pin at the moment of arrival in_ West Philadelphia. Theso fast-line threads cover only a small area of the board, butaslow way-train makes a very obtuse angle and stretches far across the rows of minutes, The time of departure for these fast trains had not been altered, but he wanted to get a little more speed out of one or two of them if possible. In saving three minutes with one of them he experience considerable dif- ficulty. He ran his thread thirty miles over one section of the road be- fore he conld pick up a minute, He was taking into consideration his knowledee of things not shown on the board.
