N ! o ] OUR I0WA NEIGHBORS. The School Board Playing the Wandering Jew. ‘Buocessful Business En er- pri-es Growi g Up. A Stranger Arrested for Carry- ing Concealed W ear ons Police Mentions == Pleasant Per- sonal Points. The school board held their regular meoting on Monday evening. Ona oount of some trouble with the heat ing apparatus down at the Bloomer sehool bulding, the meeting was held somewhere clse. After the members of the board had spent some time in trying to find each other, the business of the mecting began at the north wreat corner of Broadway and Main atroot, Professor Farnham, John Green and E. E. Aylesworth being present. Mra. Hill, whose husband has the wontract as janitor of the Second ward school, had a complaint to make be fore the board. It seems her hus- ‘band has gone away or is sick, and the duties of the office devolved on Xis s0n, who, it seems, has not made an extra good school house fireman, having allowed the fire to get 8o low that it wusof no earthly account as a heating apparatus. A colored mun was employed in Hill's place. Mrs Hill stated to the board that all th wisible means of support the family had the coming was the The board being naturally of a sym pathetic turn of mind, will 1o doubt reinstate the young man and give him another trial, untess the colored | man, who has possession, comes the “big four” over the board (and refuses | %0 count the votes.) It was getting a little chilly. Mr. Aylesworth moved that they ad- journ to his office on Pearl street, which was accordingly done. Moan time Clawsen, Murply and Spoon r, g tired of wainug down at the school building, comcluded to adjourn wp town somewhere. They got to- gether at a late hour, finally, in Jones & Aylesworth’s office, Taken as a whole, Council Bluffs has a very fine school board ; all gen- tlemen of experience and well pested on the laws and duties of schools. 'We should say that any one of them, from John Clausen down, could select = first class achool teacher at sight. They all scem to be much interested in the schools of the city, and are no doubt aoing all in their power for their advancement and general welfare. The [ullawin is the business trans- #f the board at this mocting : Mo minutes of the previous meet- ing were read and approved. ignation of s Florenco I Hoyder as teacher and accepted. A petition of tha souior and junior wlassos was read and laid on the table. Moved by Mr. Spooner that the commiitee on teachers with the super- intendent be instructed to exumiae and report on the matters of com- plaint in the high school. Carried, The committee on janitors reported s follows: GETLEMEN - Owing to the gross ne- glece ot duty T am compelled *o rec ommend the dismissal ot the janitor of the Mull school L F. Murrny. The above report was received, con- curred in and accepted. Moved that Mrs. Jobn Hill be ap- inted as janitor of the Mill school, r one month on trial. Carried. Moved that Mr. Scott be appomted 10 il the vacancy mado by the resiy- mation of Miss Snyder. Carried. The committee on clock reported, ecommending that C, B, Jacquenin & Co. bu authorized to take charge of he clock until further orders. Ac- cepted and concurred in. The superintendent reported the following summary of attendance dur ing the month ending October 28, 1881: winter janitor's offico. Qotal enrollment.. .. ..... o L840 Number attending during month .. ..1,758 Average number helonging 573 Averago daily attendance. ... .. ™ Moved that the scheols be closed for Thursduy and opéned agawn on Friday. Carried, The following resolution was offered snd concurred in: Resolved, That the kindergarten achool room be opened one-half a day on Baturday of each week to the in- dustrial guild, the room during said time to be under the charge of Miss Eddy. Bills to the amount of $102.86 were allowed, Adjourned, to meet on Saturday ®vening. A BUCCESSFUL ENTERPRISE. As an example of what can be done in Council Blufls in the way of success- ful manufacturing, we point to the enterprising firm of Mayne & Co,, m manufacturers. Although their factory here is in its infancy, as it were, having been established but a short time, they have already ac- quired an extensive reputation for putting the very best broom upon the markot that can be made. 'The de- mand for their broom has of late kept with their present capacity. [ tter broom is made anywhere than il.ll produced right here” in Council SOMEWHAT MIXED, One of the Ogden guests who ar- rvived in this city, in some way got rated from his ‘‘Saratoga.” " Not gable to account for this condi- tion of things, as he had declined it to one of our express men, with ord- wrs, a8 he claimed, to deliver the same at the Ogden, he repaired to police headquarters and put the case in the hands of the authorities. The express man was found and the mystery ex- Eiud. The express man holds that order he received was to deliver the trunk to the Rock Island depot, ‘where 1t was tound undisturbed. Before dis ¢ him the justice gave him fatherly advice, The boy, in tears, declared he never again would take anything that did not belong to him, RUNAWAY, A span of horses attached to one of our strect cars broke away from the car and taking the pole with thom ran up Brondway. They were stopped, however, before much damage was done, “ONE OF THE GIRLS A woman who lives in Omaha came over to this city to do some shopping. She got into the wrong shop, and when she attempted to get into one of our street cars, made a sad exhibi tion of herself. She made a dash for the hind end and fell sprawling in the mud. BOY INJURED.
