Rain snow and mud combined have wnited to casta damper over soveral social entertainments in our city dur- ing the past week, Undoubtedly the terrible condition of the streets pre- vented as large an attendance on Fri- day evening as might otherwiso been expocted at THE WOOLWORTH RECEPTION givon by Mr. aud Mrs. Woolworth to their daughter Miss Jeannie Wool- worth at their 8t. Mary's avenue. Placo only lacked a moonlight night and a dryer atmospliere to exhibit jtself at its best. The grounds were illuminated by headlights and the broad verandah carpeted with crash and enclosed with canvas in order to increase the space for dancing. The Musical Union furnished the music and dancing was the order of the ovening, from shortly after 8 o'clock until long after midnight. This could only be done by a remission of the fineby the judge who sentenced him, or through a par- don from the governor. Applications made on behalf of Genet to the wovernor of the state and Judge Daniels were summarily refused. As no other resource was left a number of Genet's friends con- tributed the amount necessary, and to-day the fine was paid over'to the warden at the penitentiary and Genet was released. o was met by a num- ber of friends and escorted to the city. e then went home. Genet was ar- reated, tried and convicted in 1873, for fraudulently obtaining 84,802 from the city in payment for materi- als for the Harlem court house. Beforesentence was pronounced he escaped from the custody of the sheriff and fled to Canada., After eluding justico for a number of yesrs, he returned in greatly reduced ecir- cumstances, By ndvise of his frionds he surrendered himself and was ar- raigned for sontence.
