| | 6 THE BLUFFS' BUDCET. | Triumphant Parade of the Her- dios About Town. Advantages of the New Denver Fast Express. Brutal Assault Upon An Old NMan, Bffect of the Pink-¥ye Among the Equines. Miscellaneous News, Notes and Gosaip. Notwithstanding a drenching rain storm, true to his promise, Mayor Vaughan informally established a line of Herdic coaches yesterday upon our streets, at about the hour of 10. The procession, consisting of the Herdio band wagon (containing Prof Olkers' band), followed by seven Herdics, left their headquarters on lower Brondway, and headed by Mayor Vaughan, with Dr. Cook in a private carriage, came up Broadway, halting first in front of the Nonpa- reil building, where the band discoursed some excellent mu- sic. They then took up the line of march to Pearl street and again halted in front of The Globe office, where the band again played. At this juncture we began to feel a littlo shaky. Remembering the “big 4" resolutions, we thought the mayor would pass us by unnoticed; but not s0. They just wheeled about and came right down to Tur Ber office and made us feol good, rotwithstand- ng the “big injins” had passed those resolutious and had them print- ed at the oxpense of the tax payers of Council Blufis 80 that a friend still we had. The boys seemed to play just as sweetly as if the resolu- tions had never passed, or boen print- ed at the city's oxpense. The pro- cession then started up Brordway. What they did in front of the Ogden wo do not know. They rode to Geis-¢’s brewery whero they again halted, the band playing. They then ro. turned on Broadway to Main, down Main to Willow avenue, halting at various places. Then passiug through our principal, private stroeots, they returned to the Herdic barn from wheuce they issuo to-day ready for business, and thoro seoms to be no reason why t.hV shouldn't have plenty of it. Mr, Vaughen says he was glad it rained yestorday asit afforded an opportunity for the poeople to see that the Herdics can berun in wet as well as dry weather. MURRAH! HURRAH! Council Bluffs is now in direct com- munication with Denver, Colorado, The castern truins have all changed their time tables in order to make the connections, leaving the tranafer depot at about 9 o'clock in the morn- ing and about 7 e'clock in the evening. The fare is six dollars less by this route than any other, and it is the pleasantest that can be taken. CHURCH BERVICES, An unusually large number nssom- blod in the Baptist church Sunday evening to hear their eloquent pastor, Rev. Mr. Lemon, present and com- ment upon the articles recently pub- lished in The North American Reviow, writcen by Bob Ingersoll and Jerry Black, . Mr. Lemon handle: the celebrated infidel without gloves, and at the same time dolaring (against the opinion of leading Christiun journals,) that the colonel had a right to blaspheme if he wanted to, and sceular periodicals had a right to publish the blaaphemy. Whiie Mr. Ingersoll might be wrong, he believed to deny him the privilege to_express his viows on the subjoct of religion would a greater wrong, He * believes that Ingersoll starts outin his article with a proposition that in itself shakes his wholo argument from prelude to peroration, That declara- tion, ‘““the mountains are as unstable and fleeting in the sight of God sa the clouds,” shows that there must bo something moro lasting and eternal than matter. The trouble with Tnger- #oll, Mr. Lomon claims, 1s that he ac- counts for the watch and its makor— man—but is too cowardly to go on a belicf that man had a maker God, because he can't get be- hind God and kunow him. The speaker claimed that Mr. Bluck's an- swor to Iugersoll was full aud com- plote, until he reached the charge mado against the Old Teatament *‘that endorsed slavery.” Then he said Mr. Black's old projudice took pos- session of him, }ie weakened, and had not the courago tu deny this charge also. He said the better prejudices of the two writers hero mot. The tug of war came, like Greok meeting Groek, and they fell together, The spenker claimed that the Old Tes- tament does not I;E»hohluluvury, takon an 4 whole; that Mr, Ingersoll, or any other man, by tuking a passage here and thera, can make it to s do. Ho ocould take tho statutos of our country or astate and show that they ondorse thefe. ‘t'no speakericlosed with an oarnest and oloquent appeal for the banish- ment of all infidsl thoughts from the mind, aud the acceptance of Christisu teachings as laid down in God's word as tho only reasonable aud trus solu- tion of the great “‘unknown problem," ORANGE BLOSSOMS. Last week at his residence Rov. Mr, Clealund united in wmatrimony Mr, Eben Newell and Miss Mary B. Har- rhgumn. of this city. The groom and bridoe came to Couueil Bluffs quite ro- wu.lly from Ohena, Kennebee county, Maine. FAMILY JARS. A man by the name of Gilmore was srrested Sunday night by ofticer Brooka for beating his wife. When the case came on he proved that his wife desorved all that she got as she | ngw vnnlf was uaturally a little fractious and being encient at the time rendered her very much more incorrigible. Stonestine yesterday fore- noon, near Tarley’s tannery, in the northweatorn part of the city. Ttis claimed thas he dragged him from his team and struck hin three or four times on the side of tho head It seems that one night, some time ago, Stonestine orderod young Adams out of his house, and it was for this he assaulted him. Mr. Stonestine entered complaint against Adams last evening, and to-day, no doubt, he will be arrosted. PINK-EYE. The pink-eye is still with us. Quito a pumber ot Council Bluffs equines aro stil battling with it. G. W, Grover's horses are recovering from an attack. The same disoase has been soriously interfering with the transfer business of Stewart & Winn. In anarticle that appeared in this pa- peryesterdaymorning we spoke perhaps too lightly ot Mr. Holmes' isfortune in losing & pet horse. Wo intended no reflection on Mr. Holmes, and wo rather sympathize with him in his loss. Weo understand that tho ani- mal was a vory valuable one, worth over $300. Since he was taken with tho pink-cyo he has paid out nearly ono hundred dollars in cash, trying to | %0 effoct a oure, having employed the best medical skill in that direction, His harnoss and robes will be a total loss, a8 he says he would not use them on another.
