e e 6 THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 2 1881. COUNGIL BLUFFS. The '‘Big Four” Councilmen Under Arrost, ‘They Appear in Court and Pro- pose to Defend. Interestin~ News and Gossip About Town.] “'eITY COUNCIL UNDER ARREST,” At about two o'clock yesterday af- ternoon before his honor, Judge Reed, of the district court, those who gath- ered in the court room, witnessed a most disgusting spectacle. One would suppose if the cheek of the “Big 4" had kept their legs stifl enough to enablo them to walk about the city heretofore they would have wenkened when undor the shadow of a criminal prosecution. They took up their line of march towards the court Porrawartamir COUNTY, | The State of Iowa vs. Henry Daw- son, et al, Before Judgo Joseph R. Reed, judge of district court: The defendant is accused of the crime of a misdemeanor. For that on the 3d day of October, A, D., 1881, a special election was duly and legally held in the city of Council Hfixfls, county of Pottawattamie, state of Towa, said city being organized and incorporated under a special charter enacted by the logislature of this state by the qualified electors of said city, at which said election the question submitted to said qualified electors of #aid city and then and there voted upon by said qualified electors was the .g:ndonment of the present special city charter of said city, and organ- ized under the general incorporation laws of the. state, relating to cities and towns in said state. That at said upon the pages of our district court they would recant, and without fur- ther delay in ths premises ‘assume a virtuo if they had it not,” examine the returnod abstracts, declare the verdict and in accordance therewith call a new election. THE “‘STALWARTS."” The stalwart firm of Vaughan, Chap- man & Hepburn are the most infirm firm on 1ecord, They entered the postoffico contest with that daring courage possessed by their Spartan leader, Conkling. Like him they fought. But after the contest is over unlike him they still retain their office. Although men may differ in opinion a8 to the propriety of the act of their chief, he will always have a very large following who will admire his pluck. But, who can admire the firm above mentioned hereafter unles they follow the example of their great stalwart leader and resign? BIT BY A PISH.
