p BASKING BY THE BLUE. The Town of Seward Looms Up Loftily in the Most Beauti- ful of Valleys. Surrounding Country Pour Into Her Capacious Coffera an Enormous Tribute, Beasts of Burthen of Royal Breed Raised in the Neighborhood. A Voluminous Wealth of Porsonal, Political and Businoss Items Correspondence of The Bee Sewarp, October 11,—1f this were not a country and an age of severeutil- itarianism sentimentalists would en thuse and poets write sonnets to this most lovely of vales—the valley of the Blue; but it is not the province of your correspondent to indulge in raph- sodies or mount Pegassus, but simply to tell in a plain, statistical way what has been, what is, and what is prom- ised. SEWARD, The big town of the upper end of the Blue Valley is located in the midst of the most delightful rural scenery that Nebraska's broad surface can fur- nish. When last I wrote of this town and country there was but one railroad The ley road to Seward, Beaver Crossi Fairmont, Gfneva, and o and Denver connection, 1 surveyed and, no doubt, will be built ore long, a8 this is too rich a country for the U. Corn will averago forty bhushels to the acre, wheat eight bushels, oats tifty, barley twenty, rye fifteen, and potatoes an excellent yield. Seward county has potatoes to eell, although in most sections of the west that crop is this year a failure. Brick buildings were confined to one or two stores, and now a mapnificent three-story brick hotel looms up oppo- site thesouthwest cornor of the square, and brick blocks are the most fashion- able style of business buildings. Some of our readers may be interested in knowing something of che HISTORY of Seward, a town that has in thirteen years grown to be a city of the second «<'ass, with over eighteen hundred in- habitants. H. L. Moffatt started the town, built the first house, and is still a residont of Seward. Beatty & Davis next came with a small lot of goods and opened a store. Then Fred Lan- kins, Joe Tissue, Herman Diers, Gro- ener Bros. and others followed with stores and shops in quick succession, and Seward in 1873 elected its first mayor. Four yoars previous to this dates the county seat was located here 18 very little wild land, and yet there are some very choice pivces for sale on long time. THE COUNTY FAIR. There is here a fine fair grounds and race track, with good buldings, and an enterprising agricultural socie- ty. Thig year a very commendable exhibition was held, and it is under- stood to have be a financial success, as well as a grand showing of the pos- sibilities of this wonderfully fertile soil. The stock exhibit was simply immense in all departments. WANTS, Seward nceds a _first-class exculsive ready made clothing and gents fur- nishing store, there being none hore at present. All other branches of trade are fairly represented. POLITICS are, and have been for years past, and will continue to be ‘‘red hot’ until such officials as are now fattening on is now here under the same manage- ment. These are the only relics of olden times that I find, unless it be some dilapitated wooden structures that adorn (7) the streets, SUBSTANTIALS, Some of the bwldings here are fino specimens of brick work, ‘I'hey were built when the town was in a flourishing condition, and are the envy of her competitors. Among them is, perhaps, the finest dwelling in the county, costing $10,000, The county seat was located here in '6b, but is not as substantial as some would like it to he—at least the pros- pect for removing 1% is considered good. In '74 the cars came here and this wes the terminus of the road. Two ycars ago, the road started to build, but has not gone anywhere yet, and until it does, or some other one comes, this town will assume the appearance of having been ‘‘struck Mrs. Irn Mullholland, Albany, N. But Seward has the advantage by a thou- sand inhabitants, and will, no doubt, the cards when shufiled always turn up that knave of clubs and railroad thimble rigger, our present lientenant- governor. The people have set down on him again and again, but in every convention he is there asking for something, and if begging, bull- dozing or buying will get it, it is got. At the last republican convention held ers a graphic sketch of a new railroad bridge ac! the river, which would be a redeemuing feature for this town that she would appreciate, and ought to have.
