9 "RICH, RACY AND RARE. A Goskipy Telegraphic Letter From New York, " Somothings the Correspondent of The Beo Has Noticed and Com- ments Upon--Social Affairs at the Metropolis - Washington as Center for Southern Commerces« New York State Politics--Kelly Again on His Mnscle. Special Dispateh to T New York men he apparent d Bistness nerally reflect upery the line of the diradting of public spirit to Baltimore as e trans portation point. Mr ’4 ge, super intendent of the United Virgiria lines, including the Virginia Midlend, says that the Baltimore business with the sonth will hereafter be dome by the York river rail linos. Washington City, he thinks will become with Rich- mond the new railroad mart of the south. The Damville combination ex- pects to ran through passenger trains from Washington to Louisviile and Cincinnati over the Chesajmako & Ohio, with which and with the Nor- folk & Western road, the Da neille in- | terest is on close terms of alliance. SruE TROPUEM OF THE H OUR, Will there be enough of acrop For the railroads to haul and lweep buasy’ The bulls say ‘“‘yes” and. the bears say “no.” Public opinion genevally warrants the statoment that the orops are from 1b to 98 per cent show, The bear interest is therefore ver, large and also claims tha b large blovks of Amarican railway shaces muwst be released by Euorps to check the dle- clime of gold te this country which will continue to be hea ¢y on aeceunt of the large balonces they owe, and which must conténue to incremse, par: ticularly in.England “where the wops are failures. The London Eoonowmist admits that England owes ue H100,: 000,000 on last year's trade. ¥et thig market has been ralying ona steady supply of specic from Euvgne for many monthe and if it should be checked by« surrander of our rail- way toouritiee seious stringeucy of | anoney would arise as well as a wild| tumblo in the prices of stocks. Bloney 148 BEEN TIGHT .all August, but was casier at sho okose of last week, on account of @he great release of government money to tike aip seonritice, puy pensions, ete. ¥ conty-two méllions of dollars have paid out to the public by owr wment or by Europe in the past ten days. Twenty-six millions anorewill be paid -urt by the treasury in tho next seven weeks. The mach-abused pension bill passed by the last.congress is, therefare, playing its part in reliev- idng the money market, as §46,€00,000 of the above comes from this source. The argument of the bulls is that the unchecked confidence of theweountry in every circle and the activity of ananuracturers, importers end.emigra- tion, /mines, railroad building and ‘house building, give ample tramspor- tation to balance the deficiency in grain crops, and railroad interest will «continue to lead any other, and ' that the oaly source of an ominous prophecy is the speculators who want ¢o eell the {;mwn high-priced stocks shert. The bulle.sny that we never before had ONE-HALF THE MONEY J:rusm. in the country that :s now ere locked up in trust companies to build great railroads, like the Atlan- tic & Pacific, the Northern Pacific, Wexas Pacific, &c., and they clam that $250,000,000 of this money is now in New York, and will ibe ~dis- bursed in large quantities forthe next two years, and used if need be to sus- tain stock. GBNEBAL MERCANTILE BURINESS in New.York is certainly good and de- rives an advantage from ihe railroad war, which stimulates purchases while the freight rates are low. Thestreots are blocked with wagons. Geods are generally low, particularly so with woalen goods. Carpets are as cheap asin England. /AAY GOULD AN HIS SON. Juay Gould has taken his twenty- two year old son into partnership in a banking house with his secretany, Moresini, and his broker, Conner, Gould himself putting in half a mil- lion dollars. Gould never signs his own checks but has them prieted in fac simile and his sccretary fills up the amonnts. George Gould is a shapely, good sized man with eoonomi- cal habits and expertness in physical exploite, Mr. Gould has paid little attention to society but as lxiu duugh- ter is growing up he gradually grows more conservative. He is presumed 1o be the new controlling spirit of the clevated railroad, which 1s a million and a balfin debt, TRE BUILDING BOOM, D. 0. Mills has now nearly finished the Wall street front of his great office block, which is to cost §2,500,000, Cyrus W. Field's great oftice block on the battery will cost nearly a million, The imwmense chamber of “commerce, now going up, is nearly opposite, The goverumant Large office, of stone and iron, on the battery, to ac commadare dirst - class foreign passengers, is well aGvanced, The dward Clark Hotel, opposite Central yurk is up one story. These fimt buslding operationsin New York ave much increased the price of me- chanies’ labor and waterials, Sowe sy that the office buildings in New York are overdone and will not here after bring the present rates. The new bank building at Broadway and Wall street, ealled Poet Sherman, was put up so haatily in the winter that it 18 dangerous to itstenants, most of whom took leases for a term of years, GEN, N¥ has been asked by certain Cincinnati capitalists to aseist in secu the Southern ratlroad of that city for a| kome syndicate and possibly to lend dlew his nawe, MORE WATERING PLACE HOVELS, Although three of the largest ho- tels on the sea const uear New York have either gone into bankruptey or declive, another big oue is to be begun at Coney Islaud on the ground bhought for $160,000 and Austin Corbin, presidegd of the Long Lsland railroad, 18 going te spend 2,000,000 next year on the new watering places, ANOTHEK KIUK AT THE TELEAHONE, A good deal of dissatisfaction with circles, owing ¥'5 the time consuwraed A | yood showing | Strogali in calling the gecond party wp, and lawsuits ari sing from the indistine- | tions of ttr nemission, or retmdiated contracts mnot rded in distinct I'he telegraph is szain being taken v in preference to the tele- phone, erms THE BAITVATED railoads of New York, two in number, have been earning £81,000 and £70,- ™% amonth respectively. Kelley asgailed the rival democratic organ zations to Tammany Hall last night and intimated combustion if he was kept out of the state convention, but it 18 believed he is strong enough on the inside of Tammany Hall to bolt Again. Among the democratic candi- dates for the fmportant nomination of attorney general, is Martin I. Me- Mahan, long chief of stadf of General John Sedgwick. The oountry allies of Tammany Hall seem inclined to call a truce with the Tilden-Robeson interest. By some Mr, Tilden is con- sidered a candidate for the presiden- cy agam. Many of lus €riends alloge that his only interest in politics is to sec that his friends are not abused, THE REPUBLICANS in this state are uneasy on account of the ill-concealed resentments between tho administration and Grant factors. It is noticed that ex-Senator Platt, whom Mr. Conkling put over the convention in '77, is again made chairman of the state committee meet- ing and the convéntion is called for New York City where the partizans of Vice-President Arthur are in almost complete control. Arthur is PASSIVE AND DIGNIFIED, The stalwarts. however, who have been in power so long, need but a nod to become thrice stalwart, The issue of victory in this state lies with Gar- field. Tt is noticeable that all politi- cal bodies here passed resolutions of condolence with him except the New York state republican committee. Judge Lathrop'’s Illness. Natlonal Associated Press. New Yorx, September 3.—Tt is not generally known that Judge Lathrop, of the N{sw Jorsey Central, has been dangerously ill for some time at his residence near Morristown, N. J. Re- ports received from his bedside are not encouraging, and strong efforts are being made by the clique control- ling stocks to inspire confidence in property in theevent of Judge Lath- rop's death. Itis alleged, however, that thereorganization scheme behind which Judge Lathrop was the great power and a very shrewd adviser has come to a stand-still since his sickness. Nothing has been done for many weeks towards taking the property out of the hands of the receiver. In order to sustain the New Jersey Cen- tral, and to sell some stock to bears inside the clique, is said to have been a forced purchase, ity CITER A Clergyman Horsewhipped National Associated Pross. The restlessness referred to in the morning bulletin was not such as to seriously afect the comfort of the president.
