The masons ot Council Bluffs have taken a new departure. It has been said that that order was the ‘‘eamp- ing ground of the human heart,” and now it seems that the order here pro- unping ground pose to make it the ¢ of the human mind.” They propose 1o establish for the benefit ot the order a free library. HAIR-SPLITTIG EXPLANATION, There is a conductor in the employ of the U. P, dummy train, who, not- withstanding he got taken in when he had his clothing made, knows just what the fare is from Council Blufis and return; fifty eents from Council Bluffs to Omaha and twenty-five cents from Omaha to Council Bluffs, We heard him trying to convince a young man from this side that the differ- ence in the distance was so great that they were obliged to charge the extra quarter. Wo can say from personal observation, as the hog said when he struck the chisel, that it was sharper than Hades, but out of place in that pen, GONE TO THE CAMP, Yesterday morning the city of Council luffs was favored with some soul stirring music from Fall McFaddens celebrated drum corps summoning the old veterans of the war to their place of rendezvous pre- 'vious to taking up their line of march for the Union Pacific transfer grounds, where they took the Cannon Ball route for their camping grounds at Shenandoah, The line formed on Pearl strect opposite the grand army headquarters and headed by the drum corps took up the line of march to the transfer, The old veterans were in :Klemlid condition and on account of o gleam of hope that they read in Tue Bek telegrams from Washington seemed in better spirits than they had been on Sunday, TO-DAY'S PROGLAMME, ‘The following are the entries in the 2 27 class; purse, $500; Corbin Bashaw, by Wash Corbin, Chicago. _Edwin B,, by Edwin Bither, Ra- ness, by, W. He is delighted with Council Bluffs and her surroundings. He thinks we fail, however, in not taking a little more pains to keep our streets clean, He 8 the reputation that Salt Lake City and Denver got has come as much from the neat and tidy con dition ot the streets as from any other source. Mr. Berry says that the view that one gets from the new street laid of the Bluffs, at the new park cannot be excelled. He sayc if he lived here, and he may some time, he would not cease his appeals until this city had water works and a first-class system of drair Mr. Berry is one of the sohd men of the country. He says a an can live as clieaply in San ywhere elso, Board and a man can get | a meal for ten cents. He is a staunch republican, a personal friend of Jas, G. Mr. Borry will start in a fow days for his old home at Gardiner, on the Kenne- bece river, in Maine. THE BLUFFS IN BRIEF, J. R. Harrington, of Hopkins, Mo., who was on his way to attend the grand reunion at Shenandoah, stopped over a few days in this city with his sister, Mrs, Metcalf, who lives near the North end of Main street bridge. Mr. Harrington was a member of the Second Towa cavalry. The steamer gave Bayles’ park a good wetting down last Saturday evening, which made it the coolest place in the city. The city engineer, Mr. Judson, has established a grade on Mill street, be- tween North Sixth and Scott streets. There is a portion of the sidewalk on the west side of North Main street left in a very dangerous condition. It should be attonded to at once. The woman who tainted on lower Broadway under such peculiar cir- cumstances last circus day has since died. John Vernon, who struck the old man from Omaha with a brick Sunday, was an employe of Mr. Knepher, cigar maker on lower Main street. Thomas Hendry, of iron works fame, has just completed a con with a mining company in Colo for an immense silver smelting apara- tus. The most of the machinery has been forwarded, but the furnace is still in the shop not quite finished. Burghart, the beer man, will soon erect a fine house near his bottling establishment, Conrade Geise finds that the pure cryetal water from which his beer is manufactured makes a splendid card for him, Mrs. Burke, who will ride against Mies Pinneo next Saturday, is of the o}inion that Miss Lizzie Pinneo, sister of her competitor, is the best rider of the two. For a choice, she would rather ride Miss Minnie for a purse. Look out for accidents going and out by Andy Graham, along the top [two colored m THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: TUESDAY AUGUST 30, 1881. Greenville (N, €.) Spectal mountaineer and outlaw, was to-day pronounced by his physicians a well man. The fact is at this time of spe- cial interest, as Redmond was his body. One of them took exactl the course ascribed to Guiteau's bui- lot, and yet, shut upin a miserable jail, with unskilled nursing and under the care of obscure country physicians, the outlaw stands to-day, with the red glow of health on his checks. He was at the time of his encounter with the revenue posseabout the same built and two pounds less in weight than the president, He is reported to have said: ‘“‘James A. Garfield, president of the United NStates, was fired at by a single nssassin and struck by a single pistol bullet, ten- derly cared for, ministered to by the most celebrated masters of surgery, and scientifically nursed every mo- ment, He lies hovering between life and death; and, while I live to go to Albany prison, the man who is needed and prayed for to _govern 50,000,000 of people will probably die.” You Can't Afford To be without Warner's Safe Kidney and Liver Cure, augd0eodlw who sleeps over the store, heard a noise in the night and got up and weat to the window and listened, but hearing nothing further, retired.
