" DES MOINES. An Interesting Letter From a Thriving City. It's Beauties and Manufactur- ing Industries, Yowa State Fair and Othor Importe ant Topios. Correspandence of The Bee Des Motxes, Ta., August 20, —Des Moines is fast becoming the greatest manufacturing city in Towa. The CLOUDS OF COAL SMOKE and the pufling of steam are seen in overy direction. Tt contains the larg- est foundry, machine shops (excluding railroad she engine works, sash, door and blind factory, and barbed Within a side are ex- ch railway in Towa is pointing a significant finger in this direction, and most of them already deliver passengers and rec and dischargo freight in. this ity The B. & M. will reach here in a few weeks, and will cross Fourth street through the alley one-half block north of the C,, R. I. & P. New industries of a public charac- ter are still being added, among which the greatest are the Gilbert starch factory and Kidd's distillery, Two hundred car loads of stone have been in the foundation of the latter, 80 1o one can accuse its founder of building it ona sand bank. I am told that this is to be the largest distillery in the United States. The center of the great corn-fields is constantly tmvei‘lr.g westward, and the great corn crushers must sooner or later follow up the corn-fields, Des Moines is a very beautiful city of 25,060 people, lying on both sides of the river bear- ing the same name, The greater part of the city is on the west side. PUE NEW CAPITOL is on the Bast Side, and begins to make quite an imposing appearance, It is a magnificent s'ructure, bmlt of white stone, elaborately trimmed and ornamented, a tower at each corner and a dome in the centre. The edi- fice occupies a double square in th, reaching across one street, and is sur- rounded by what may be transformed into an elegant park when the building is_completed. The interior will be more elaborately decorated than that of any other capitol in the western states. It will cost three millions, and covers two acres of ground, but will not be mudfv for occupancy within one year from the coming December, THE 10WA STATE PAIR to be held in this city from September Hth to 9th, inclusive, promises to be one of unusual interest. The location of the grounds is extremely favorable for an exhibition of the products of the soil ana for the attendance of far- mers from all parts of the state. The C.y R. 1. & P. railroad will run trains toand from the grounds every half hour. The grounds contain nearly one hundred “acres, including a smalil natural lake having an average depth of sixteen feet, and covering over three acres of ground. The arrange- ment of carriage-ways and walks and entrance and exit gatos is very con- venient. The officers are men of - telligence and prudence, who compile reliable information and statistics re- garding the resources of the state, that are used to advantage in secur. ing immigration. Numerous letters are being constantly received from parties in the east, inguiring what are to be the prominent features of the fair, and “signifying intention to be present. A special feature will be DAIRY HALL, and a new bnilding to be used for that purpose is now in course of con- struction. During the last five years Jowa has taken rank ar the greatest creamery-butter state known to the Chicago market, and this fact is ar- Testing the attention of many enter- prising men of the east, who are look- wire factory of the west. short distance on ever; haustless mines of coal, K | ression with a meaning is not desired ll'ln-n- must be no expression against Mr., Wilson in favor of an opponent. As this is the home of Mr. Kasson his name ean be taken up with safety, and it will not b ed unfavors to Wilson. Mr. Kasson is in Washing ton, and therefore is in no way respon sible for the use of his name. But Hiram J. Smith is known as a Wilson man, and as it is possible his oppo- nents will be strongerthan his friends, they must be divided. This is done by getting a_third man in the field Rev, D. R, Lucas, a popular minister of tl Christian church, a prohibition te, and at the same time a Wil- son man, is pitted and led upon the track with all the outward show of orked scems to hav like Hiram Y. Smith is reported ahead, and it is believed his opponents have been so effectunlly divided that it he does not succecd | no one will. The reports from the country portion of the county are not sufficiently in to determme who has been recommended to the convention, but if the country has been as well manipulated as the city, Wilson may expect a vote from Polk county firat, last and all the time, A number of Gear men were on the same tickets as delegates to the coun- ty convention, Later intelligence says the Hiram Y. Smith ticket has been carried with a sweeping majority. DE WITT DOINGS. “Ranger” Visits That Place and Tells All About What He Baw There. Plenty ot Business Being Done--A Good Opening For a Mill. Correspondence of The Bee. De Wirr, Neb., August 18.—De Witt, Nebraska, is located on the Big Blue river in the southeast corner of Saline county, and is one of the best towns on the Beatrice branch of the B. & M. R. R. Itis noted for the extremely fertile land tributary to it, the large and in- crensing herds of cattle that are fat- tened by men who make it an exclu- sive business, and for the fact that THE TOWN is on a financial basis that 18, perhaps, without a parallel in tho state, It is asserted that there is not a mortgage on a single house in this town, 1t is also said that for the size of the town there is not its equal in the state for legitimate business trans- acted. T have not, in the four weeks that I haveboenon thistrip, and T have visited nearly a town a day} found a single place where my calls upon the busi- ness people were so universally ploas- ant and profitable. Intelligence, enterprise and a hearty good will seem to be the leading char- acteristics of the people. In just four hours'time, with the aid of that most genial gentleman, Mr. W. H. Staley, I hada subserip- tion list to the Bee that included every man we called on excepting one only, and he had about half a dozen dailies already, but would take the Bee on the "lst of January, when some of his stock on hand’ expired their subsériptions. Not one of these subscriptions was for less than three months, and some for a year. All paid in advance with- out a word of objection, Now I want some other newspaper representative to ‘‘give his experi- ence” and tell Jif he can of a single town that will beat this one. Two fine elevators have been ercct- ed this season, Mr, Hastings’ elevator having 12,000 bushels capacity and the other 10,000, There was an ex- cellent flouring mill here, but two cars ago it burned. Five run of urrs were kept busy night and day, "There is no better opening in the state of Nobraska for a mull, it is cJaimed, than right here, for there is a dam by the mill-site of DeWitt, but ing west for thelemployment of their capital. A new fruit and floral hall is in course of erection, It is in the form of a Greek cross, 90x00, well lo- cated and made attractive, Tho capi- tal dining hall is being enlarged, and many new machinery buildings are being erected, most™ of them made ranent buildings, Secretary John R. Shatfer has opened an oftice on Fourth street, opposite the Aborn house, and is ready to answer all que- xies about matters pertaining to the welfare of the fair. ~ He roports that James G, Blaine will be on hand to deliver the address. \ MAUD 8, and a splendid collection of other lively stevpers will add to the at- tractiveness of the speed ring. The premiums offered on speed n{one ag- gregates $0,395, and for the circuit, which includes the speed rings at Omaha, Hamburg and ggal.l Oak, the last two being distriot fairs, aggre- gates $15,000. There will be two chariot races every afternoon, and a ten mile race between Miss Pinneo, of Denver, and Miss Curtis, of Tope- ka, Kansas, There will also be o bicycle race in which the premiums ainount to §150; also hurdle and noy- elty races, with lia‘rcmiuuu. Mr. Ellis, by the w.{i is the owner ef somo very fine Durham bulls and cows, thumnghbrev.ll and pure breds, and foeder of several hundred head of mixed cattle, For morality and honesty, and for an entire lack of criminal items, this town and vicinity is famous, For years there has not been a crime committed in this neighbor- hood There is but one attorney in town, and it is said that he would starve to death, but for the practice he secures in the surrounding towns, | There are two good saloons running in accordance with the Slocumb law, but drunkenness is unknow nor nearly 80, and when there is a wild fellaw to be seen on the streets he invariably hails from Caldwell, or some other metropolitan town, There are many excellent pioces of land hereabouts that are held by spec- ulators, and for sale at the estate ency of the town, In fact, there is no land here that is not black as ink, and rich as cream. Every one of these farms will in a fow years be the home of some one who is now trudging along a very dusty path of life, toiling to en- rich some eastern land owner. Cheap farms will soon be a thing of the past here, and those who want all the ad- vantages of civilization with cheap land must come soon, Five to twelye dollars gsr 4cIe Bocures raw prairie farms, but next year the number will be few and the "price materially ad- vanced on those that remain, T cannot spesk too highly of this town and count{. MASONRY IN SPAIN, At this moment Freemasonry holds a position in Spain very interesting alike to note and to watch, In that country “par excellence” of opposi- tion to Masonry, the home of the in- quisition, and the scene of Masonic persecution, ceaseless and cruel, the prime minister, Senor Sagasta, is now the grand master. Gone, let us hope for ever, are the hindrances to and denunciation of Freemasonry. Ended, let us trust, are all those serious diffi- culties of legal recognition which have always rendered the position of Freemasonry in Spain an unenviable one, and at one time threatened to in mourning 3" has been swamp it -altogether. For Free- masonry cannot and does not flourish in the dark shade of secret meetings, forbidden by law and which almost always are metamorphosed into surreptitious and hurtful political associations. Legal- ity and order, loyalty and charity, are its ever essential characteristics, and without them Freemasonry ceases to be Freemasonry proper; and, eall it what you will, degenerates cither into a political elub or a hurtful associa- tion, Truly speaking, Freemasonry only serenely flourishes amid the peace and stability of empires and republics, innsmuch as always obeying the laws of the land, be they what they may, Freemasons respect all forms of government and never con- spire against the state, 3 LINKS, The conclave of the grand comman- dery of Knight Templars for Ohio meets in Cincinnati on September Gth and Tth, There are eleven royal arch chap- ters, with a membership of 500, in t{lo jurisdiction of Nova Scotia.
