There are 126 representa- tives preseat, noting for the 7,000 members, ocomprising the circles throughout the United States and Canada, While the proceedings are jealously guardel, it is believed the meeting is @ highly impertant one in connection with the present Trish and European questions, Ameng the members present are Dr, John O'Leary, the aell known Irish revo lutionary leador, who has made himself rominent at Paris and other places. Elo fis known to represent O'Donovan Rossa. It has came tolight that as long as last January letters were received from representative Irishmen in New York and elsewhere seeking news as to the practicability of hold- ing a convention which should repre- sent all the vevolutionary Irish wings, and the present council is the result of such correspondence. The secret sessions are believed to have begun last Thursdey. Rev. Dr. Betts, of St. + Louis, is permanent secretary. The Williams Boys- National Amociatod Press. WHIzEWATER, August 6,.—The Wil- liams brothers were seen yesterday at the little village of Genesse, and a telegram was sent to Milwankee for officers to eome and arrest them, but for some unknown reason none came and the boys are still at large. The skill shown by the numerous alleged pursuing parties in keeping about twenty-four hours bn-him‘ the mur- derers is exciting a good deal of un- favorable comment. They are re- ported as frequently.seen and met in either railroad tracks or public roads, but are held in such fear that they are never molested, sl e A Desperado Caught. We prefer to use United States sacks in all cases and the few Canadian sacks which reach us we keep until we have enough to make up & package and then we return them empty, . L M Hartmann N National Associated Pross. Burraro, August 6.—Hartmann, the nihilist, is not in Canada, but at Niagara Falls village. He arrived here on the early train yesterday morning, but managed, with the as- sistance of friends, to keep his where- abouts secret. He was seen to leave here on the afternoon train for the Falls. CHicAGo, August 6.—Telegraphic advices are received this morning from a large portion of Indiana and Michi- gan, giving the condition of the wheat and corn crops in the first named states. The area planted to corn is net up to the average and the crop has in many sections been inestimably damaged by long continued,‘drought, Only one county reports an increased mnaa over lg-t year, but even in this the yield will not be over a half or two-thirds the average crop. A Havana physician is now experimenting with remedies which elsewhere have proved success- ful. There has been nine fatal cases at Merida since the first indications, only three days ago, and the ravages at Vera Cruiz are terrible. | 2 | The government hascontracted wit an American firm to construct a sev- entysfive thousand dollar dock at Campeche to accomodate eight hun- dred ton vessels. It will be controlled by salaried American_engineers. Martinez, the guard who murdered Senor Sievro, paymaster of the Mexi- can Central railroad, in a conspirncy to rob him of 30,000 pay moncy, has been taken from jail by a mob and shot. Crry or Mexico, August 6.—Gen, Boe has left the city for Chihuahua, to assume_command of the troops in that district. His orders from the government are understood to be to collect and combine such of the scat- tered forces of that state as can be got quickly together and to carry ona war of extermination against the In- dian marauders, who have crossed the borders and who are reported as de- vastating the country. The National railroad advertises for one thousand men to work on the division of the International raiproad which extends from Laredo to Mon- terey. The official report of the cause of the accident has not yet been pnblished, and engineers com- missioned by the government to make an investigation of the affair have re- turned to this city and have filed their report. The people are demanding its Eublicntion and much blame is found y. reason of its suppression. The vomits, or yellow fever, at Vera Cruz is still raging badly. Derroir, August 6.—The forest fires in Michigan have ruined hund- reds of thousands dollars worth of timper and completeletely destroyed scores of lumber camps with their out- fits on the line of the Saginaw valley and St. Louis railroad. Miles and miles of fences, entire crops and thousands of cords of wood are burned. Great damage is done in the vicinity of Freeland, but the road be- ing impassible not much can be learned of the facts beyond the report of Geo, Whitwan's mill and lumber ‘.s‘nh. At Austin Station, on the Flint, Pere & Marbuette railroad, the fire drove the settlers for miles about into the villages and the station was beleagured Great damage was done on the line of that road between Reed City and Evart, At North Branch many houses, barns and crops were duutwud. The company that have taken in hand the improvement of the springs, are likewise contem- plating the erection of a large hotel for the accommodation of visitors, They will pursue the same policy respecting prices of lodging and board at their hotel as they have in cutting down the price of baths. The public will commend this course in a substantial way, The cold soda spring is open to the public free of charge, and a great many find their way to the spring several times a day, and declare that they are greatly ben- efitted by the use of the water. The mines of this region are nu- merous but have not been developed to that point to which time and capital will bring them. There are several fine lodes within a few miles of town that promise as well as the Champion or any other paying mine hero which can be bought for the money it has cost to prospect them. One party has two m.ines, one with a drift of three hundred feet, and another prospected to about the same extent. He will sell the first for a small sum in order to get means with which to develop the other. Fancy prices are here no longer asked for ‘‘holes in the ground.” That time is past. Those who have really good ‘‘prospects” take you to the mine, and encourage you to use your own common sense, by enabling you to take out as much ore asyou deem necessary for sampling purposes. After the necessary exam- ination, tests and average assays; if you want to buy, all right; if not, no “harm done, ' But capital, with- out doubt, can find no better field ina mining district for investment than here. Rides into the mountains for sight- seeing and health are the order of the day with those who are able to take vigorous exercise. The superintend- ents of mines are always courteous to visitors, and spare no pains in making them feel at home, ~ They will take you hundreds of feet into the bowels of the mountains, and explain every novel feature in their mines without considering the loss of time orthat they are entitled to any par- ticular praise for their courtesies. Mi- ners, like sailors and unlike railroad- 8, are patient and obliging fellows, indeed, The little town has been overrun all the season, and is expecting a most prosperous and brilliant future. It is certainly a delightful retreat in the mountains, and has wonderful springs of healing waters, M. springs and cold soda spring. 22t — POLITICAL POINTS. WILSON AHEAD IN 10WA.
