The police generally scem to think that the new law 1mposing a fine of $10 and costs in simple cases of intox- ication is working a salutary effect upon such portions of the community as are addicted to occasional jambo- rees. There are fewer arrests for that offense now than before the law was passed. Heretofore 83 or $4 would get a man out of such a scrape, but now it takes over §13. When a man has paid a fine of that character once he usually avoids doing so again im- mediately. The only bad feature to the law is that it is made a county of- fense and persons convicted of being drunk are sent to the county jail when they are unable to heir fines, Heretofore they were utilized in the street, e i “ROUGH ON RATS."
