Every indication yesterday pointed to a very light voté being polled on the sewer bond question. It is a very strange fact indeed that so little general interest was spparently taken ina subject which so nearly concerns every citizen of the commun- ity. Wereit an election to decide whether some particular persons should hold sn office mo drumming up would be necessary, notwithstanding that the election would confer no practical benefit on anyone except the one who received the honor. ThE Bee has always taken the stand that everybody in the community has an immediate personal interest in the question of whether or not the city shall be sewered and the health destroying qualities of uncovered trenches has been demonstrated time and again in all portions of the city. The vote polled, while it scarcel represents more than one-fourth that cast at the last general election, yet clearly encugh indicates the wish of the people in regard to the sewer question. The general result will show about 1,011 votes in faver of issuing the bonds, with 273 against. Ttis a rather decided expression of the wish of the tax-payers on the sub- ject and a vindication of the course taken in the matter by Tue Bee. The result by wards is appended: FOR BONDS. 245 AGATNST. Totals. ... ......1,011 The total number of votes cast, it will thus be seen, was only about 128 Wates, Waves In Nataral Curl at CanTer's. Is It the i- Rise? 8. P. MOESE & CO. The river rose rather rapidly at this point yesterday, although it scems to be a somewhat mooted question as to whether the June rise is coming or not at the present time. The. present stage of the river in- dicates 122 feet, or a rise of about nine inches since Monday, The river is still rising, with indica- tions that it will continue to do so for the present. Reports from vp-river sources would indicate that the pres- ent rise is due to the rain-swollen river below Pirree. Considerable rain has provailed in that section of the coun- try for several days past. Very little damage, however, has has boen done. Mr. Samuel Shears returned from Colorado yesterday evening, and is stopping at the Planter's hotel. Mr. Shears has an extensive shoep ranche in Colorado, ‘and out of his 10,000 sheep, he found that 2,300 had perish- ed during the winter. He counts the profits of the year a blank. His esti- mate of sheep lost in that region dur- ing the winter is fifty per cent, and cattle between thirty and forty per cent. In speaking of the new hoteb project, Mr. Shears said the Visscher' property had been sold for §1;800, and the house en Thirteenth street for £500. The temoval of the houses will begin as early as possible, and as soon as the ground can be got at, the exca- vations for the Hotel Millard - will be- gin. It is caloulated the houses will be removed by the middle of June, and the foundation will be under way by July 1st. Notwithstanding that the sun has almost destroyed the dangerous quali- ties of the mud, -a few accidents to vehicles continue. to occur. Early yesterday one of Bauman's brewery teams ‘accidently got into an. excava- tion for water pipes, near the corner of Fifteenth and Farnham streets, and. for a time serious consequences were threatened. The animals pitched about from side to side and become almost unmanageable. They were finally quicted down enough to be unhitched, but not before they had smashed the tongue of the vehicle. A temperance lecture in the shape of a dozen beer kegs are piled up near the new opera house as a reminder of the accident. At Fourteenth and Douglas street there is a most elegant opening to the new Jerusalem in the shape of a man trap. TheZ heavy showers Jof Mon- day made a miry trench of the open- ings for the water pipes, andyesterday these were merely leveled off alighting on the trench would, in the nature of things, sink several feet. About noon a two-horse team hap- pened to step into the miry mass and ina moment sunk to their haunches. They were rescued with considerable difficulty and came out looking very dilapidated. A double team of horses passing the Creighton block_yesterday got into the mire lmm(.dlakb]y opposite Kuhne & Co.’s “drug store. One of the -leaders fell, and before the animal could extricate him- self the fore animal had worked breast deep into the mud. Finally, after’a long struggle, the horse got out, and this is another hole not marked by the street commissioner. e Ly HICKMAN'S ANNOUNCEMENT, Continned from yesterday.
