(Olipper for a long time able to throw with around ENRAGED BRUIN. A California Brown Bear Creates I;Huqc ia the Deuver-Stock Yards. Bursting Open its Oage the | Beast Attacks and Kills Three Sea Lions. Deaver Teibuns, Apr m through freight from the Siope the. Atlantic brought to Denver exdsy mornfng a Union Pacific TenfiNtod bot-cac contalning thirty- three Pacific sea lions, a true grizsly baar and a California brown bear. The mmul- were in_charge of the owner, ‘S J. H. Mallett, anoted- hunter collector of Califorafa, aad_yere consigned to_the English Zoologleal Garden, Kensington, Lon: don. The trip from San Francis¢o to Denver had consumed thirteen days, and had proven onme of hardship to the animals, which, confined necessa- rily in close quarters, exhibited un- doubted signs of failing under such severe experience. Capt. Mullett con- cluded to remiin over ome train in Denver, and securing: the proper per- mission his car, with its curious freight, was slde-tracked In the stock yards, out by the Junction, The captain has been engaged in making collections of wild and pecu- liar animals for years, and his card an- nounciog his aveeation has found a standing position in The New York He recently furpished two cars of rare specimens from the animal kingdom of the slope to Forepaugh, one car to Barnum and one car to Cole, the latter collection being shipped to Australia. - Captain Muilett claims, and 1t is undoubtedly true, that he has made all the fmpor- tant collectious of sea llons or seals which have been sent from. the coast of California. He secures_ these am- phibidus animals by means of the lasso which from long practics he'is now reat precision the bodles 'of the creatures from some high ol:f or prominenco while they are sporting in the waters bengath. - This mcds he has demon- trated to be very successful, particu- larly aa the body of the animal is very seldom injured in the least. The Captain did not at first intend io burden himeelf on the trip with the bears, but hayicg received a good of- fer for a pairfrom New York parties, aud seeing an opportuaity to transport them across the continent practically free of coet, he concluded o accommo- date the car to these wild beasts in addition to the sea li The Iatter, thirty-three in number, were placed in boxes built strongly énough to pre- vent their getting oat by resson of theiz stroggles or the motion of the car. These boxes were made water- tight at the bottom and for some dis- tance up_the sides, while across, the top boards were fastened at sach di tance from each other as to farnlsl free ventilation. Of the thirty-three weals all but two were young animals, these two being full grown, large and powerfal. The boxes contatning, each, three ses lions, lying partly covered with water in a space parhaps six feet long, by three feet wide and three feet high, were packed very much, by way of illustration, as brick are Iaid, every alternate brick, however, being omitted. These boxes of seals occu- pled about, thiree-fourths of the car, and in, the other guarter of the space were placed two strong wooden boxes, containing, one the grizzly besr and the other the brown bear. It may be stated that the grizzly has been fu the possession of the captain for some time and though & _very large animal, weighlng fally 1500 pounds, has gained the reputation of being & docile old fellow. The brown bear was captured but a few months ago, is young and very wild. He was not considered as particalarly - dangerons however. Sesls, as is well known, eonstantly givé vent to a peculiar snd distress- ing ory, simlar, it has been sald, to that of & horse In pain. As it Is now theorized these nolses, continually made by the thirty-odd soa lions, angered the young bear until he be- camo feantic with rage and tore about his diminutive cage in his fruitless at- tempt to resch the objects of his brute spleen and wreak vengeanc on the en- tire company of sesls. Yesterday morning, between 7 and 8 o'clock tao young bear after days of effort broke the bars of the cage, and with & wild cry bounded over among the bozes containing the seals. The two old seals were in a box on the top tier, and at these the bear bounded, striking with his feet and standing npon a box contalning three young seals. The old animals wero secare in their box, and though the wild bear madeevery exertion to get at them, erowling fiercely snd loudly and striking with great force at the face of the cage, the box withstood all attack. Bat in the exertion of the boar to reach the old sea lions, thecage on which the savage brain stood gave way under the weightand caving in crushed and killed the three younger eeals within. Wben the commotion was atits height, Captain Mullett, who had been attracted by the terrible noise created, rushed up to the car snd took In the sit- uation at a glance. It would have been impossible to have stayed the bear by force of word, the brute was in the wildest rage, and perfectly un- controllable. For a human betug to have entered the car would have been instant desth. And the bear, if the boxes could be demolished by his mas- sive paws, would annihilate every seal in the collection. The bear must be secured, was the instant conclusion of the experienced hunter who taw his wvaluable collection {n imminent dan- ger of self-destruction, for it must not be taken for granted that in a combat the bear would come off uninjured, for the sea lion ia a strong adversary when on the defensive. Captain Mul- lett glanced about him in daspair for a mionte, and then, espying a saloon oear by, ran thither in quest of assist- ance. Ashe eatered the door of the saloon the captsin diseovered a large, old-fashioned bar ice chest with large #pace within, a good sized door and lined withzinc. The very thing! The captain explained his awfal dilemma. tothe bar-keeper, offered any price for the chest and men to handle It, and in no time the cumbersome picca of furnitare was belng transported by arms to the oar, where the bear was atill keeping up his assaolt on thecagas of seals. When the car was reached the ico chest was propped up by loose tles aud pleces of railroad iron until its opsning was exsctly on a level and directly agalnst the doorof the car. The latter was then raised sufficiently to permit the besr to pass from the car into the ice chest. - Then. several of the men, headed by the captaio, went to the opposite side of the car and by means of long prods succeeded firet in attracting the bear from his fight on the seals and finally by forcing the animal into the chest. No sooner had this been done than withsomedifficulty and dangerand t was moved back from the car and the door swang to and strongly nailed with cross bars of heavy tim- ber. This ended the excitement, and the crewd, which congregated in spite of the early hour, felt encouraged to come somewhat nearer the car than caution and fear had at first permitted. Capt. Mullett entered the car and fouad that the damage had been con- crashed under the bear. = These were dead and were removed from the car. tor in the day the captain.had a ‘massive wood and iron box :made for | J. the savage brute which had caused { him so much loss and trouble, and in- | to this'the bear was ssfely removed | and_then replaced in tho car. Mr. | Talor, the mussum man, learning of the affair; vitited the stock yards in the afternoon and purchssed cf Capt. Mullett tho dead seals, which were placed on_exhibition at the maseam last evening, and attracted a great deal of attention. Capt. Mallett pro- cecded east with his car last night. e IOWA BOILED DOWN. The Baptistaof Vinton are to_have a new church costing sbout $7000.
