At noon vesterday when the signal service ofticer made his measurement the water was 21 feot and 7 Inches above low water mark, which Is just 5 Inches below the recent rise, and was atill rising. A Brx reporter vis- Ited tha lamber yaeds and found the situation very bad. Foster's boom, which i the farthest down the stresm, broke yesterday and about ten thonsand feet went out, a very little of which was secured in the nelghborhood of the U.P. bridge. A geng of men was stationed at the break, who saved most of the lum- ber which came down ~sfterward. Hoagland's property and that of the Chitago Lumber company Is, 1f pos- sible, in worse shape than ia the re- cent flood. In both yards lamber piles are trom Malvern, In. A lavd slide at that point caused a slight delay of the regalar train. BARRED OUT. Althongh some of the_ tracks could be used for incoming trains, the height of the water at § o'clock n the after- moon rendered it very difficult for the tratns going out from the transfer depot to get through. Al of the tracks were deep In water, save the ‘Wabash, and the other trains will not attempt crossing azain. Between the bridge and the transfer platform, and the situation o affairs is very much as it was two weeks ago. The water has washed away much of the earth under the track on both sides of the bridge over,Spoon lake, but flst cars which were run on before the washout com- menced and heavily loaded with iron, keep the rails in about the proper place. All of the fiat cars are sunken up to the tops of the trucks, bat still farnish a place for a rade plank- ing, over which the through passen- gers were yum«y obliged to walk, and the matls and baggsge wers car- rled. Two transfers were made y terday, and all passengers carriedsafe ly scross. THE U. P. WASHOUT. About 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, as the Union Pacific train was abont to leave the Omaha depot for ita wi ern run, the startlingintelligence came tion of TOPPLING OVER and floatlng down agsinst the booms and in several instsnces where the piles have been Jarge they have fallen over the booms and considerable quan- titles have floated down with the cur- rent. Two lime houses, belonging to Hosgland, which stood 100 feet north of Douglas streel are now below that street, while one small building, crushed by the flood, stands In the middle. Un every side lumber piles are toppling over and flosting down with the current, and within the ten minutes during which the reporter was standing in front <f the Chicago lumber office not less than 30,000 feet floated away In this manver. While this lumberis held by booms at present, its constant increase, and the acoslerated force of the current, is likely to break the booms, For some reason the stream through the yards appears a'reads to ran with far greater foroe than durlng the late rise. Between 11a. m. and 12 the river rose 2j inches. The lomber compaties are doing nothing as yet toward removing the lumber from the yards, and It is questionable 1f anything can be done. THE SMELTING WORKS, The situation of the smelting works sppeare ous in the extreme, but r. Nash Informed s BEe reporter that the water had done its worst harm In reaching its present rise and that a foot or two more of rise would not increase the damage. The com- washed away, and it was impossible to get across. This deterred the traln from starting. Later infermation confirmed the report. TheElkhornrose seven feet in two lmnrl on Wednes- rapldly yesterday. About jons of the earthwork -pvmm to the bridge from this elde suddenly gave way, and a yawning op ‘whioh J¢ was Impossible to brldge until the water went down, was opened. Traln No. 4, due here at 8:25 p. m., had not reached the hrld;& Tt was sent back to Fremont, where lts pasengers are now, per force , The Elkhorn, which falls as rapidiy s it rises, com- menced to godown last night, "and it is expected that facilities for trans- ferring passengers will be ready by nooz to-day, and the west bound travel and traffic go through all rlght. ‘The train :lom Lincoln flu;e in about 2:30 yesterday afternoon, having just passed the bridge before th:ngnu occarred. X THE BLUFFS the situation is very nearly the same as it was two weeks ago. There is water all over the bottom land, and nearly all of the familics are out of their houses. The U. P, transfer hotel is agaln surronnded, and p.:, :n,do nothing to protect its | 1 C L A8 e hollers properiy has agaln gone out. The AN ALARMING PROSPECT. Telegrams from Sioux City were re- ceived yesterdsy by several parties interested. One of these telegrsms stated that the river was twenty feet above low water matk, had risen three weather, however, belrg warmer, the absence of steam hest in the building is leas uncomfortable. Al of the C., B. & Q. rolling stock was yesterdsy taken to higher ground. TWO O'CLOCK REPORT. At two o'clock this morning the riverwas at a point hitherto unsurpass- ed, twenty-two feet and two iuches sbove low water, and_over thres feet above the so-called high water mark. The meesurement of the signal ser- vice officars at 8 o'clock laat & ning showed twenty-onefaet and ten Inches, nd up to the time of goleg to press the height was steadily increasing. The Plunder of No Value to the Burglars—Is There an Organized Gang in Town ? A bold attempt at safe bresking at the U. P. coal house on Thirteenth street was recorded In Txz Bpe a fow days since, and Wednesdsy an even bolder attempt was made at the office of Hobble Brothers, ticket brokets, on Tenth street, near the depot. The barglars entered by forcing the front door, and as a preltminary step went throngh a trunk belonging to obe Rudolph Harr, filled with clothing, which had been left in Hobbla's office by its owner, an old friend of theirs. A large quantity of the clothing was taken out, dsmpened and packed around the safe to desden the sound when they should attempt to blow off ths door. A hole was drilled through the outer door, just above the combination, through which the powder was placed. On arriving at the office at 8 o'clock yesterday Mr. H. O, Hobbie found the front door unfastened and enter- ing discovered the mature of the event which had occurred. The safe door was blown open and partially shatter- ed and the drawers in the lower part of the safe had been torn open and ‘more or less broken to pieces. These drawers had contained certain valua- ble papers, mortgages, deeds, etc., which were of no value to the burglars, bat all of which had been taken and have not yet been recovered. The burglar proof box which con- tained the rallroad vickets and a small sum of money they had been unable to open, though it had been scratched and battered by their persistent at- tempts. Two heavy iron barswhich they had used stood in a corner of the room and are apparently taken from some lumber yard. The rear door of the offioe stood ajar, and the roof of the coal shed, Into which this door opens, had been removed, while a piecs of balustrade had been placed against tbe side of the building asastep. The burglars had thus pre- pared for a quick egress from the resr in ocass they ‘wero discovered. Soveral rear yard, partially washed out by the rai, in- dicated that the work must have been done soon after midnight. Parties ware sleeping next door on both sides of the office, but heard no sound. eral boards fn boot tracks in which had the besn The manner in which the work was done indicates that this jot, like that at the cosl shed, was done by profes- slonals, whe are probably making thelr headquarters here.
