The reason for the use of the vdd torm io leases, 909 yeors or 99 years, is given in The New Yotk Joarnal of Commerce. Lesseos and mortgagees in posscasion of real estate for 100 o 1000 years demised the same at an an- naal reats], retainiog a reversion for the last year of the original term. The object of this was an unwilling- ness on the part of the under become boaud to the perfor the covensats contained in the original grant; and also the importance to the lessor of a rever.iomary fn- terest, withont which, under the old English practice, he could not recover his rent by distress. Some- times this reversion was only for thres daye, or even for one day, but usually in long terms the L ar was retain- ed. Out of this came the popular no- tion tnst the law provided this re- straint, snd hence leases were made for 99 or 999 years, when there was no reason whatever for any sach odd period of time. In England thero was in special cases, & restraint on corpo- rations or 0o-clesiastical persons, pro- hibitiog the demise of landa belongin, to them to the impoverishment ¢ their successora for & term beyond 100 years, and such leases were made for 99 years. =0 Somerset (Ky:) Epecial to Ciacinnati Enqu'rer.
