How to have Fruit with Little Labor. Prairio Farmer. Ina former article on this subject, we told how to have fruit in plenty frema ““truck patch.” There are other ways of having an abundance of fruit on every farm with but little labor. Grapec—TIt is nataral for the grape vine to climb and spread over treet All hardy varietles do well when train- ed on trees, and many of them de better than in any other way, if their roots can have plenty of ground to draw nourishment from, nat occupied by other roots; therefore any species of tree can be madea support fora productive vice. But those species of trees baviog deep feeding roots like most of the oake, are the best for this purpo The best plan when we wish to cover a tree with a grape vine, is to plant the vine some distance from the tree, and then train the vine into its lower branches, and the farther away the better; 80 that you can reach these A tree standing en . de can ~ be made beautifol 25 well as a productive ob- jeot in this way, if & vine is planted above and trained intolt. A hardy grape vine planted and trained over » lattice work, sbading the back or front door may be made with a littl besuuful as well COoncord or vines planted in the corner of the old fashioned Virginia worm fence, and oared for two or three years, and al- lowed to ramble at will over tho fence, will have a great amount of fruit, Such fence corners can also be plaut- ed with black raspberries, peach, plum and cherry trees, where stcck does not run. Acd if mulched a little esch yoar they will do finely. A common post and board or picket fence makes & good trellis for the grape. ~Currants and blackbsrries do better than most anywhere else if planted against the north side of a tight board ‘fence or wall, if cared for. All little ravines, rivalets and gulches shonld have their sides and bottoms planted with blackberries, our best native plums, gooseberries, grapo vines, etc. These will prevent their washing oot deep, and_their shade will protect the water, if any, and make it more permanent, and also give a grest deal of fraft. - If the birds got all of this they won’t come. after that near the house so badly. We have teen large and fine crops of grapes_growing year after year on vines planted on the north side ¢f an old and large osage orange hedge, without any osre whatever. We have seen grspe vimes in a door yard covering four or five quite large shade trees, making & very ' pictaresque _objeo! efal shade, and produciog an abundance of fruit. Some of the most beauti- ful objscts in our westera sconery are traes covered thickly with native wild grape vines, - especlally our thorn bushes (crafaegus). Our hardy and cultivated vines would be equally fine. It is wonderfal how much spaco can be ‘covered by a Concord vine if its roofs have a sufficiency of proper food. ‘We havo seen a few black raspber- ries planted along picket fence sup- ply a family with plenty of this froit for twenty-five years. The steep north hill-sides of ravines, may be plauted with our wild red with a very little care give an abun- danoe of frait. This delicious, native raspberry (Rubus strigosus) is espe: cially adapted to steep northhill sides, where it escapes many of the ills it is subject to south of its native hablta- tion; itis a fact worthy of considera- tlon, that wein this land of entirely too much sunshine—and very hot sun* shine—are too prone to plant our frolts on south hillaides. In this, patterning after the Germans, ;‘l::el; tht;:.wld h-.nmmlr climate are to plant the grape. from, hot Palonine on ek, MR T3 have it mature fruit. Oar north hill- sides, or hills facing north, are very much better for every fralt we geow, (with the probsble exception of the peach) than southern exposures, ‘both in summer and winter. A plant on s hill facing southward, has, as it were, to psss through twen- ty winters to the one of » plant on & northern exposure, sim- oy for the reason that is continually thawing and freezing. It is ascold st night, and too warm during the day; ita roota are pulled out and killed by the frost, and it s foroed to early starting in the spring, eto., while the one on & northern -expoeure s frozen up snd left comparatively dormant until spring, and if any szow falls it staya there to protect It. . Tne Style of Dresses Worn in Boa'on. Letter in Scranton Republican, The last charity sociable of ths sea- son took place culy a couple of weeks 2go, by-the-way, and it was a very brilltant affair, the costumes of the Iadiea inparticalsr being smong the handsomest that have been seen on any occasion of the kind in Boston this season, And then they are sll excellent dancors, tie grandfather and all, and ono does not fear to wear handsomo drese, lest it should get torn from one's baok, though a majority of the dresses worn at thia party snd At most porties noW, are of “dancing length,” which means that the bottom of the skirt reaches to the ankle on the instep, which reminds me of what & gentleman said the other day con- corning a cortain yourg Iady. NEW YORK WORKINGMEN RESOLVE NOT TO DRINK THE BEER OF CERTAIN BREWERS. New York Special to the St. Louis Republican, Seaeral weeks ago owing to rumors thst the employes in at least one brawery were subjected to rough treatment by the foremsn, the plan of forming a union among brew- ers’ employes was broatohed. The German press ventilated the subjeot nd it is said that the leaders of the striking plano-makers’ union urged on the movement. A handful of brew- ers’ employes met at first, and already, after a fortnight's agitation of the new plan, brewery workmen aro en- rolled as & medium for the interchange of ideas. They deny having threaten- od or prepared a strike. The bosses or master brewers on the other hand are understood to have gotten the idea that » stetke for fewer hours per day and a higher rate of wages was the aim of the organization. The stories of the employes and of the master brew- ers do not agree as to the action that led to the antagonism of the two bodies. Both sides agree that men were discharged from the breweries of the F. & M. Schaefer company, Jacob Rappert and Georgo Ringler, and that many other workmen fol- lowed the discharged ones. ~ The re- sultis what is said to be the first practical and compreheneive attempt at boyootting fn_the United States. The breweries of Messrs. Jacob Rup. pert, George Ringler, and the F. & Mr Schaater company aro the ones to suffer. Between 8,000 and 9,000 workingmen have resolved not to drink any beer coming from thete es- tablishments. Workingmen in var- ious trades’ unions throughout the city and nelghborhood in meetings that were held on Taesdsy, Wednesday, Thursdsy and Friday nights resolved to drink no more beer made by theso three brewing firms. They declared that they would not patronize any bar-room where the products of these breweries are sold. Among the or- ganizations thus agreelng to boycott these brewers ara the Socislistlc: Labor varty, the workmen at Stein- way's piano shop, the Bakers' union, the cigar makers, shop of McCoy & Co., the Farniture Makers’ unton No. 9, the Wood-Carvers’ union, Laforte's shop of furniture makers, the Cigar— Packers’ union No. 2, the Working- men’s assoclation = of Astoria, Tiland; Typographical union 7, the central comi~ mitteo cf United Farniture Makers |, of North Americs, the Olothing Cut- ters’ Protective union, , the United Order of Silk Weavers, the Trades’ uniona centrsl committea (of all the trades’ unions), the Advance (work- ipgmen’s mutaal benefir) assoctation lesser bodies.
