A Bali on St Patrick's Day Forbidden. At the conclusion of the services Sunday in St. Philomena's church, Bishop O'Connor read a lstter which wes addressed to him from a Sister of Charity, in County Galway, Ire- land. The letter was an appeal for sid: “Oar circamstances are sad, in- deed, while the country is passlug through a crisis, of which we, at least, cannot know what will be the end, but certaln it s that the sufferings of the poor whils it lasts are, and will be pitisble to witness, * * * Those who at other times would give a litile help, now refuse to do so. * * ¥ The potato crop of ou really poor charge is fast ranning out, and how the creatures are to subsist, or sow their little land God alone can tell ” The bishop stated that he did not think the appeal called fora general collection, but requested any one Who felt disposed to respord to leave their contribution with Father English, and that he would be very happy to forward it to the sister for relieving distress in that place. The bishop took occasion to remind his congregation that he had prohibit- d a public bell that was to have been given on St. Patrick’s day at Colum- bus, under the auspices of the A. 0. H. He thought it was out of place and scandalous, as during the season of Lent all secular smusements of this kind ara prohibited and forbidden by the Calholic church and svoided by all good Catholics. He had not pro- hibited the procession that was an- nounced for the eame day. He con- sldered such demonstrations, ss a gen- eral thing out of place in this country, especially in connection with general celebration. CHALLENGE To Prof. Ang.
