The average American is in a great hurry to realizs on his investments, If he ordersa few gardso eeeds in January he is anxious to have them sent immediately; and if ko forwards six cents for & copy of come paper which coatalns a story which he has read or heard, he does not forget to request the publisher to send it “by return mail.” Patience which takes the form of quiet waiting is a virtue of which he ssems to bs wholly ignor- ant. Ho cannot wait the progress of events; but must constantly hurry and fret in order to make nature move a little faster than her usual pace. This teudency crop: out very plain- ly when he purchases trees. He finds them described in the catalogue as “second class, medium, first-class, ex- tra.” The difference in these classes is principally, if not wholly, in the size aud height of the trees, The larger the tree, the higher the prico— but the farmer ““don’t care anything about that.” ~ He wants ‘‘good trees or none,” and gives his order for those of extra size, and which are four or five years old. In doing this he thinks be i acting wisely, but the nursery- man knows better, and the farmer will find before long, that with equal care, the small trees will grow faster, and, if a fruit tree, will come into bearing conditlon sooner than the large ones. In half a_dozen years the tree that was small when planted will be largor and finer than theother. Tho reason for this is obvious, Tho largor the tree the larger the roots which it has, sud the largar roots and the less fibers there will bs upon them. A tree that has glenty of fibrous roots will grow readily, if proper care isused in the transpla-ting; but mo amount of ekill can coax a tree to live and flourish which is destitute of those little fibres. The roots of large trees of mutilated in the process of taking up, while the small trees eustain little injary from this source, Dealers in trees assert that experienced men buy small, thrifty trees, whilo thcse who are just starting, are anxious for the largest to be had. Those who are t0 set the trees the coming season will do well to learn from the experienco of those who, at considerablo loss to themselves, have demonstrated that small trees are the oncs to buy. The testimony of the foremost orchardists goes to ehow that one year old fruit trees will bo larger and more thrifty, aearale, and come iuto bearing as soon as those of two, three cr four years old at plauting at the nursery. Tne ¥armer's Horse. This animal of all-work is princi- pally need for draught, but is occa. slonally rode for pleasure. He should bea stout, compact animal, without being a heavy, cloddy ome, with welght enough for the collar and ac- tivity enough to move overthe ground very well. Farmers will gonerally prefer mares £o geldings both for rid- ing and driving. Taking bulk for bulk, mares are etronger and mors durable, and will perform more work, aud in addition to this the profit on her breeding is to be taken into the account. A mare may safely be work- ed almost to the time of her foal- ing. Great care should be taken in the selection of a mara, as the value of the foal depends more upon the mare thsn upon the horse. Farmers too frequently think any mare will do t5 foal from, and if they find a great, prancing stallion, loaded with fat, he reckons on having a valuable colt, and should hs fail to, he attrib- utes the fault to the horee, acd not to his want of judgment. For the pur- pose of training colts, too early a commencement cannot ba made, By a proper courss f training the diffi- culty of breaking a colt can be obvi- ated. A colt should be trained at the end <f the sacond year, but not worked much ustil tho third year. THE BOWIE KNIFE. FRAGIC STORY OFTAE FIRST WEAPON THAT BORE THAT NaME. Philadolyhia Tmes. A toud had existed for years bo- tween two parties of the parish Rapides, Miss, on Red river. The prlocipals woro De. Maddex, M. Wright and the Blsnchards on one part, the Curceys, the Wellsos and Bowies on the other. A challenge was passed botween Dr. Maddox and = | nearer the combatants than the Samusl Wells, and a meecting was sr- rauged to tako place near Natchez, Miss., tn Scptember, 1827. Hither the parties repaired with thelr friends. t was agreed that no person shonid be present but the combatants, their seconds and surgeons. The place of meting was a large sand-bar, im- mediately below the upper bluff ne: Natchez. The szud-bar at low water is of considerable width, bordered above and below with forest growth; oa the cppcsite side of this bar wers stationed the friends of each party; one of these parties wers somowhat her. Col. Crane was the second of Maddox. Between him and James Bowie and Gen. Currey there had long existed a deadly feud; and some months before this affair Gen. Currey shot Col. Crane with a shot-gun, on Bayou Raplds, disabling one of his arms, The parties to the duel approached the spot selected for the combat from different directions. The prelimi- naries were soon arranged. The com- batants took their positions and ex- changed two shots without effect, and the difficulty was amicably adjusted. Bowis was just in the edge of the woods with Gens. Welle and Currey, armed with pistols, Bowia carrying a huge knife, As the duelling party started to leave the grounds Bowie and party started to meet them. The friends of Mzddox and Crane on the oppostte side of the sand-bar seeing this and being furthest from ths part started to run to meet thom as soon they should reach the retiring com- batants. Gen. Cuarrey was the first on the ground, closely followed: by Bowie. Currey mmediately advanced apon Col. Crane and remarked, “Col. Crane, this is a good time to settle our difficulty,” and commenced draw- ing ks pistol. Bowle did the same. Crane was armed with a brace of da- eling plstols and standing awaiting the attack of Currey. At this moment Curry was seized by his brother and begged to desist. Bowle and Crane fired at each other, it is said without effect. There were those who said Bowle was wounded. The latter statement I think most probable, for Bowle stopped, felt of his hip, and then drawing his knife limped toward Crane, who wss watching Gen. Cur- ray. Released from the hold of his brother, Currey was advaucin, this moment Cran@ leaped small ravine cut through the sand by the raln water flowing from the accliv- {ties above, and, resting his pistol upon his crippled srm, firedat Carrey, wounding him fatally, He fell, Crare was cow disarmed and Bowle advanced cactiously upon him. Club- bing his pistol he struck Bowie cver the head, 23 he avoided hi nife adrottiy, and felled him to the ground. Crane retreated a step as hia friend Major Wright advanced upon lim, and with a long, slendor spear, drswn froma walking cane which he carried, atiacked Bowie, who made a pass to parry the spear with hia knife,in which he failed. The spear was cold iron, and striking the breast bone bent and went round apon the rib. Bowle at this momewt seized Wright and fell, pulling Wright down with and on top of him, and holding him strongly to i hisperson. Wright wasa slender and by no means a strong man and power- 1ess In the hands of Bowle, who ccol- 17 eaid: *Now, Mejor, you dle I” and plangis the knife into his heart kill- ed him instantly. : This knifo was made by Resin P. Bowio out of o blacksmith's rasp or fle and was the origlnal of the famous Bowie knife. When James Bowie re- ceived it from his brother he was told by bim that it was ‘‘strong and of | admirable temper. Itis more trusi- worthy in the hauds of a strong man than a pistol, for it will not snap. Crano and Wright ara both your ene- | miez; they are from Maryland, the birthplace of our ancestors, and are asbrave as you are, but not so cool. They ate both inferior in strength to yourself, and therefore not your equal ina close fight. They aro both dan- gerous, but Wright the most so. Kaep this knife always with you. It will be your friend in a last resort and may save your life.” After this confilct Resin P. Bowio carried this knife to Philadelphia, where it was fashioned by a cutler into the form of a model made by him, and I presume the knife is yet in possession of some member of the family. Thero was no_reconciliation be- tween Crano and Bowis sfter the con- flict, though Crane aided personally in carrying Bowio from tho ground, and Bowle thanked him and said: “Col. Crane, I do not think under the circumatances you ought to have shot me.” Almost immediately upon the attack of Carrey upon Crane the fight between their friends became general, in which there wera roveral wounded, but Wright and Currey 3weu tho only porsons killed. All the men engaged In_this terrible affair were men of wealth and high social § position, and the two parties included almost every man of ‘ortune in the extensive and wealthy parith of Rapldes. Al are gono save Maddox and Wells, both very old and still re- siding in the same parish. SAN ANTONIO. IMPRESSIONS OF A VISITOR AT THE OLD TEXAN TOW: San Antonfo lotter to Tho St. Louis Republican Here wo ere at last, bound for Mexico, the wonderfal para- diso of fruits, red pepper, tarantulas, cactus and rattle-snakes. We made our triumphal entry into this 0ld S enish town yesterday (Sun- day) in & rickoty omnibus under a magnificent Juno morning sun. It was warm, remarkably 8o for the sea- son, and after walking a couple of blocks we were vry glad to drop our overcoats, as sn abundant _per- spiration was making walking somewhat_disagreeable, Evorybody has read about the old Alamo place, where wo mnow stop, with its old church and fort, both now dedicated by an enterprising Frenchman to gro- ceries, dry goods and general mer- chandise. This is an immense affatr, and seer: in the distance is quite im- posing, since the warltks proprietor haa erected throe towers with several batteries of wooden cannons tn remem- brauce of former times, His cannons do not szem to scare_the customers, for the place 1s filled with visitors. The old church is used as a kind of general warehouss and the smell of salted herrings and coal oil has invad- ed tho shrine of the incense and per- vades everything. Tho clty of San Antonio itself s full of life, blocks upon blocks of fine business houses fill up its crooked stroets, while the very crooked Anto- nio river with its whitish blae waters, rather of a soap suds tint, winds its way all around the place, so that at every fow stors’ when you expect it the least you find a good substantial bridge crossing over tho stream. The streets are rather narrow and have a decldedly Ttalian look about them, the sidewalks being considerably high® er than the street and only about 3 or 4 feet wide, . The amount of buziness done here is simply immense. Everybody looks happy and sitisfied. Out of the 25,000 inhabitants claimed, fully one- third are Germans, among whom the Hsbrews seem to predominate; none of thoss impertinent, overbearing fellows though, but of that enlightened and sociable class that know how to live as well as how to make a living. May-be the climatic influences here, 0o, have softened the relations of the different race; at any rate if Bismarck had more of the San Antonio and less of the Polish Jews around him the Hebrew question never would have loomed up In Germany. We took a trip to the beautiful San Pedro springs, whero we fed the sun and cat fishes on indigenous bretzels, while drinking escellent St. Louis beer, and at the old mission of the Conception spent tho afterncon. At the last place we found an old church in pretty good repairs, with the usual complement of rugged, low, cellar- like dwellings adjoining, out of which an old Irish woman emerged with a tremendous contribution box, that sho had a certain way of ehaking most remorsclessly undsr our noses at every step while expatiating upon the beauty of the country and the old age and eanctity of the church. Over the maia enntrance is engraved the date of 1435; the pile of rocks looked odd and old ‘enoygh for that, but we had our doubtsabout the matter, specially about the 4. Itlooked as if it had been raised from some other figure; of course this Ia a mere suspicion, San Antonio has four public free schools and one normal school, with twenty-eight teachers and numberless pupils. Tae school buildings are fine two-story, hard-rock affairs, spacious and_conventent, cach costing from $6000 to $7000, so we are told. Most of the ald business men ars Germans; their children are said to be great mu- sicians. Therois an amatour opera club, just now rehearsing ““The Bo- homian Girl.” They have already roadered several operas to the gsneral satisfaction. The country all around the place looks at & distance like an endless orchard. A thorny tree, the sizo and form of peach or emall apple trees are growing at a pretty regular distance of 15 to 20 feet, At firat sight you would think you were iz an orchard, In some places the prairie looks like waves, slternating with ridges and hollows every six or ten feet, and that for miles; we heard many explanations but failed to find a satisfactory one, We are buging sup. plies and outfit for a journey of about 1,300 miles through Mexico, and ex- pect to start in a day or two, Eacsien’s Arnica salve Sasve in o world for %, Scres, Uloera, Salt sver Sores, Totter, Chapp- ed Hands, O as, Corns, and all ki kin ons, This Salve n porfoct antial ron Bis por hox. 8diy Ish & McMahon, — An Honest Medicine t'ree of Charge OF all medicines advertised to cure any affection of tho Throat, Chest or Lungs, we know of none we can rec- ommend as highly as D.
