A case in which the whereabouts of $10,000 is involved in some mys- tery and which brings to light some phases of life so peculiar as to excite the surpriced comment of the Judge considering it, has just been settls! in the Orphaus’ court. Seven years ago Jesso Benner kept a hotel at Whitemarsh, which is on the Fiowertown Pike in Mont- gomery couaty, and about two mil from Chestnut Hill. He had s wife and & daughter, Ells, noted as vell for her fascinating ways and_beauty as for a disposition to recklessness in her conduct. In June, 1873, Kila R. Benuer, then 23 years of age, was married to George B. Berrell. Ex ctly what led to sach an attempt at union it is impoasible to imagine, for it was but another case of match- ing without mating. Barrell, whe was 30 years of age, a_ rough, lli-dressed, seriou minded farm ‘laborer, and the last one that would be looked to | 83 2 succesful wooer of the innkeep- er's pretty daughter, as he did not even possess wealth as mask forab-| sent charms. However, the marriage took place an the wedded pair began lifo together in the Whisemarah Hotel and there they remained for less than three weeks,'when somathing —no on> liviug can tell what—caused a_sudden snapping,so farthe united partios were concerned, of the marital knot, though the law still held them as one, Whether Borrell left his wife, or she loft him, or whether they separated by mutual consent, is not known. But Ella did more than leave her husband, for she fled from home and came to 1 Philadelphia, and as was perhaps to { be expected of cne who bad made uch a misstep, sho scon found herself {in a place that should have been for 1 ever unknown to a pretty country gil. In the sort of company sho now found herself among she made the acquain- tance of & young man named Jacob ject of her affections. SUDDENLY MADE AN HEIRESS. In August, 1873, Jesse Benner died in his Whitemarsh hotel and left an estate valued at $20,000 all of which subject to his wife's life estate, was left to his erring daughter. This sud- den accession of wealth did not turn Ella from her course of life, but only seemed to open to her a broader ave- nue of dissipation. Still retalning Hause as her Intimate friend she pass- ed back and forth from her mother's house to her abiding place in thiscity, her widowed parent having s full knowledge of her daughter's way- ness, but still consenting to re- celve her. The handsome grass widaw, still with Hause aa her frequent com- panion, spent moneyrecklessly and led a wild life, until, in April 1879, when, with a fall knowledge of the facs that her husband was living, she married Jacob Hause in Norristown. Henown mother. who also knew that Ella’s husband was yet treading this earth, was present at the ceremony and said not cne_word when the vows were uttered. Hause also knew that George Barrell was not dead, but he was told that a divorce hsd boen procured.
