A WESTERN DEVISE WHICH IS NOT POPU- LAR IN NEW YORK, New York Sun In some of the western citfes the fire engine companies- consider the ordinary means of descending from ono story to another tedious. They therefore Ignore the stair whenin a hurry, sud slide down pole instead. The pole is round, polished and oiled, and runs from the first floor, where the engine atands, to the second floor where the firemen sleep. As soon as the alarm-gong sounds a trap door i thrown open i the tecond floor, leav- 1og a space arcund the poleabout four fet square, and the firemen tumble from their beds, rush to the pole and slide to the ground floor. In Chicago thisis considered a very olever and time saving devise, and the firemen of that city lock upon the departments of New York and Boston as being far behind the age. A San reporter walled upon Fore- man McGill of No. 32 engine in John street. The foreman sald: ‘‘The Chi- oago people ore extremely proud of that bean pole of thetrs. The last | P time Chief Swenie of that city was in New York he came down here and we hada longtslk aboutit. He clalmed that 1t saved an immense amount of time, but that's all nonsense. It is atterly impossible to shorten the time now, for we've got it down to the fin- est point. Still we can all be abed except the night patrol when an alarm comes, and seven seconds after the first note of tho gong will find us tearing up the street. The men are always down tairs and by the engine in a couple of seconds, andall the tel- egraph poles in creation can’c make them any quicker.” Capt. G. L. Crum of No. 4 engine said: “‘Polel We don't want a pole. It's img ossible to get an engine out any quicker than we do. Three sec- onds aiter the first stroke of the gong our engine and men are ready to start and waiting for the alarm to stop striking. ~Aotually ready before you can count one—two—three.” The captain touched the gong and in 2] seconds the driver in his seat shouted “Ready. ““I'd like to know how a greased pole is going to better that time,” said the captain. Chief Eli Bates was found at the headquarters in Mercer stroct. Our men twist into their coata while running down stairs, and save time that way. We are now building our engine-houses 8o that the men sleep on the same floor whera the eogine is. When I was in Chicago they had their stairs made four feet wide. On one tide was a smoothly planed bourd, and the firemen, in- stead of running “own statre, slid to the floor below on the board. It was a poeiical sight to sse a big two hundred and-fifty-pouuder rush for- ward and glide to the bottom of the shafi with a smiling countenance. I dafe think we'll adopt the Chicago pole.
