Parlisment Stands by the Gov- ersmenton Irish Pesce Meesures, — GANY HOME KULERS Specia! Dispatch to The Bee. Loxpox, Janusry 26—10 p. m.— The house of commons was in sesslon all night, and {x a:ill sitting wichoat suy immediate prospect of an ad- journment. The home rulers are making the big fight which they have 80 long threntened, and are resorting to every speciesof parliamentary tac- tios o prevent a vote on the coerclon bill. Gladstone’s resolution havivg precedence to Mr. Forater’s bills for the protection of life aud property in Ireland, they repestedly made motions to adjourn, but were as frequently defoated on adivision by a heavy ma- jority. The debate on the coercion bills now locks like a drawn battle, neither slde ziving the slightest sign of surrender. Still, the obstruction is only a concentration of temporary expedients, and 0sn do no more than delay again the result, The fecling 1s growlag that, while the sovzrnment. will undoubtedly be able 80 to handle Its numerical majority as to the coercion moeans, recent developments will induce them to decide that it is inexpedient to anforcs them, and that they will remain practically a dead lett: upon the state statute books. BUTTING A STONE WAL Spocial Dispatch to Tho Bes. Loxnox, Jantary 27—1 s, m.— Tho debato on Mr. Gladstone's reso- | ® lution contioued yesterdsy. After a wotion to adjourn, pressed by the bome rulors, 1t was decided in the unegative, without a division. Sesing that the government remained firm in it ponition, and was determined to prees the resolution to a vote, Mr. Parnell proposed » compromiss, which was promotly declined by Mr, Gladstone and Sir Stafford Northeote. Forther heated discussion ensued, without_eliciting anything new from either side, when the house divided on the resolution, passingit by a vote of 204 for to ‘nst. It thus gives Bir. Forster's bills priority over allother matters, and the fight will now be a equare one on the coercion measures ss embodied by the home secretary for Ireland. Mr. Glad- stone then moved an adjournment, which was sgreed to, as tha house had been in session twenty-two hours. SUBMISSION OR REBELLION. Within the last few days the neces- slty for a compromise on the home rale moderate form of l1and bill looms up as the only practical solution of the refent aspect of the Irish question. Che government can enforce its coer- cion measures by filling Irelend with troops, and thus compelling the peo ple to at once choose between submis- sion or rebellion, or the government wajority may come toan understand iog with the anti Parnell wing of the home ralers, and possibly pass a mod- erate land bill over their heads by » rity which, backed by the fublic oginion of ne rly all Englaud, will bs likely to find acceptance in Ireland as the only concession possible to be ob- tained from parlisment at the present session. The discussion is a profonnd- Iy interesting one as it stands, even the popular topics of the weather and the eud of the world fall into neglect in the face of it. THE MARCH TO INDIA.
