Liberty Lingera on the Outer Walls. Gorrespondence of The Eon Liscowx, Neb., January 22.—The Nebraskastate penitentiary issituated on a tract of land embracing one thousand acres, about three miles southof Lincoln. The walls of this institution ecclose between seven and eight acres, while the balance of the land is leased for the purpose of forming. Forty convicts are em- ployed on the farm in season, and in the cne item of corn, over 800 bush- els wero cribbod this fall. This is fed to the stock, which conslsts of three hundred cattle, #s many hogs, and about fifty horses Through the courtesy of Mr. T. A. Graham, steward, I was taken behind the bara, and showa everythiug worth secing. Upon entering the reception room every visitor is required to reg- ister his nsme. Verv often the regi ter~shows over 100 persous fo have visited the institution in one day. THE WALL surzcunding the fustitation is twenty foot high, nins feet at tho base aud threo at the top. On each corner is <uard tower. Thera is also a balcony on the south wall of the cellhouse, where a guard heeps ccustant watch. There are twanty guards employed. There are TWO HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-TWO PHIS- oONERS now in the penitentiary. Tho first shap visited was that of the stone-cat ters, in which ninety men, clad in zebra suits, were making n lively racket with drill and chisel Away to the farther end Doc Middleton was engaged in dressing stone, to be used on the new capitol. He is emall of atature, and, clean shaven, looks any- thing but tho chief desparaio of the Nicbrara fronticr. In the harness shop, twenty-five men are employed, who turn out ten dozen collars ond five sets of harness a day., Thee goods are sold, largely. t1 Omaha Gealers. In vhe broom factory eight men re employed, and the capacity is_twenty dozen brooms per dsy. Adjoining this room is the stocking lory, whera seventy five pairs of woollen stockings are knit per day, by means of patent machines. In the utility shop, fifteon men aro en- goged in making all kinds of farm machinery, eto. The railor shop em. ploye thirty men, aud the lanudry about fifteen. T have recited the various depart- mints of work that an idea may be forned of how the convicts are em ployed. Itina matter of note that the prisoners are all stout, healthy looking men, and very rarely put on the sick The moet interesting foature of the pen is the cell house, which contains 320 cells. They are arranged iu a row in the center of a room 160x50 feet in dimensions, leay- ing a passage-way about ten fect wide between the outer walls snd the cell walls, on all sides. At present there ate only two stories of celle, but next sammer the lessee will double this number, making 640 cells in all. T saw the convicts quit work and file wto their dresry juartors, it belog 530 o'clock in the evening, the usual time for supper. At the tap of 2 bell the long lines begin issuing from the several shops, each convict walking with his hands resting on the shoulders of the one i front of him. At the door of the cell house each prisoner takes two slices of bread, a cup of coffee (aud occasionally pud- ding), and goes dirsctly to his cell. The count is made -fter esch meal. A keeper goea to each cell and calls the number of it, the occupant beirg re- quired to stand with his hand and face against the bars of the door aud an- swer to his call. Half-put eight 15 the hour for retiring tobed. At hali- past five in the morning the bell rings for the convicts to get up, and breakfast s served at stx The usual fare for breakfast i3 potatoes, meat, coffee and bread, and for dinnar a va- Tiety of vegetabies in addition. Dur- ing the summer butter is given at ev- ery meal. A library of 1,600 volumes is kept for the use of the convicts. They are allowed one book s week. Their letters_are given them once week also. Idid not mention the chapel, a large room in the main building, where the gospel is preached to the striped sinners. OF of this room i the warden's offize, where tho record of exch prisoner is given upon en- trance into durance vile, his photo- graph taken, and his suit_exchanged. T looked over these photograo-s. Thers were some very pleasan’ fac's among them, but others looked mean enough to beat a newspaper bil. Among the questions asked » new-comer, ia: “Waat are your polittcs!” A member of the party of visitors asked the clerk which one of the two great political parties was best represented. “The republican party,” was the reply. “Well,” sid ths visitor, “that cer- tainly don't spoak well for our party. Talways gave the republicans greater credit than that.” T informed him that the bad element of our party was all in jail, while the mayority of the democrats hada’t been convicted yet. J.B. H. Jay Goulds Abilities as a Hear. Jay Gould had $20,000,000 in mor- Soptember 1, 1873, and was then prepared to hammer the market down —t0 send thrilling fear through all theltst. On the 5th of September he appeared in the exchange and began work. Ho first attacked gold; $200,- s0ld in one day by him- self and his sssocistes. The price fell 7 cents, giving Gould an enor. mous profit. ' He locked up his profits and bis_capltal, and turned attention %o the list of stocks that had already weakened from 10 to 15 per ceat., in sympathy with his daring raid on gold. Distrast became general, shall holders were sheken out, timid ones sold oat, and mavy strong_operators ranged ‘hemselves on_the “bear” side, under Gould's leadership. Western | dor Union was the next object of assault. He sold 40,000 shares short, and down it went, tumbling ten cents in one hour, clearing Gould half a mit- lion in sixty minutes. This was on the 18th of September, and by noon Jay Cooke failed. Then came riot and ruin. On the next day the steadicst stocks dropped like lead, snd the staunchest bouse collapsed. By 3 p. m. thera had been a loss of $100,000,- 000 in values since morning, and money was worth 5 per cent. s day. Gould flitted like a valtare, through the black and sickening scenes, bat- tering morcilessly any stock that showed signs of vitality. The next sy the banks suspended, and at 12 the Siock Exchange closed doors— and the panic had settled up- on the coonry. It scemed Im- 1009 of gre possible to lift prices. There wis money enough but no_confidenco. The governmont reissued $300,000, backs There were about 4,000,000 of bles of cotton 1n the sourh, ané 1,000,000,000 of bushels of wheat ia the west, but there was > confidence, avd everything lagged. For over thrae years there was a de- pression in every-hing. Stocks would rise s bit and tren fall lower than ever, until, in April, 1877, bed rock was reached. It was then estimated ‘hat the shricksge in the leading stecks in thostreet amounted to over $200,000,000, and over ono thousand millions of railwsy valuos had gone into the bands of receivers. _The low- est point resched waa in May, 1877, and then began the upward movement that has perched the old stocks on suchfdizzy helghts. That Jay Gould has been feeling the market for another “‘break” for the past six months is well known. He has lost heavily in raiding atocks that atill had a use in them, but has always been shrewd enough to draw out ba- fore he was badly damaged. It was receutly tumored that he had been caught by Vanderbilt in sslling North- west short, and sattled by paying Van- derbilt $1,800,000. He bides his timo. He can now command $100,000,000, where in "73 he got together only360,- 000,000. A friend of his told me the other day that he had a_cash balance in the banks of $14,000,000. He is equipped for destiustion as never msn was before. With his vast system of roads, competing with almost every leading line, he can open war, cut rates and let lip havoe. With bis newspapers he can create apprehien- o. In 1873, almost entirely alone d In disrepute, he new has hosts of friends and followers That he believes tho time is ripe for bavoe can be told from the facts. Union Pacific, which he created and made valuable, is now selliog twenty cents higher than it was when he sold out of {i—presumably believing that it had then reached its top value. Like Skore is now selling at 50 per sont. higher than it was when ha was when ho was selling it short, implying +hereby that he thought it then too high. So of St. Paul and Northwest. He belioved they weretoo highmonths ago, and boldly sold them short—and yot they are now 40 to 50 per cent higher thau they were then. ~ He will atrike them then with all his force, and then ses tho aolintors fly —[New York Letterin St Lonis Republican. —_— He Wauted to Laugh. Detro't Fro» Press. At mid-fxrenoon yosterday, » men who was cconsing Woodward averue at Congress street suddenly bozan to paw the air with his hands and periorm divers strange antics with his feet, and afrer taking plenty of time about it he came down ina heap. More thau filty people saw the performauce, aud there was a general louzh. It had not censed yet when a man with & funeral coun ‘tenance pushed his way into the crowd and asked: “Who is he—what's his name?” “Its Jones,” answerad a voica. ““What Jones!” “Thomss Jones.” “Surel” “Yes, I've known him for over twenty years,” “Then I'll laugh,” ssid the solemn- faced man, and he leaved agaiust the wall and chuckled and laughed wuntil ho could hardly get his breath, One of the crowd remarked on his singalar conduot, and the langher wiped the teura-from his oyes and repliod: “Gentlemen, nothing tickles me all over so much as to_soo a man fall down. Ten years ago I was saleeman in a wholesale houze, with a fine chance for promotion. Oue day a man just ahead of mo fell down and T lsughed. It was our old man, and be discharged me on the spot. ¥ive years later I was engaged toa rich girl. As T came outof thepostoffice one day aman sprawled out on the walk, and I laughed till I was sore. It was my Angeliny’s old man, and he broke np the match.
