Loyl 3B, SINPSON MEDICINE CO., and s, X REMARKABLE CAYE IN THE SANTA RITA MOUNTAINS, Tucson Citisen. For several years tho existence of a curious cave nesr Greaterville has been known to the miners of the vicinlty, but the difficulty of thorough exploration has deterred many from visiting it, and half its wonderful ex- tent is as yet unknown. From P. J. Coyne, a well-known and reliabl prospeotor, who is in this city, in company with Mr. Johnson, a Citizen reporter this morning gathared some interesting facts regarding the cave, the sesult of a partial exploration. The eave, which is known to tho miners as the Aztec, Is located abont four miles south of the Greaterville placers, in & limestone zidge. Quite recently a party of miners. number- ing eight or ten, including Mr. Coyne determined o dlscover it possible the extent and resources of the cave and provided themselves with ropes, candles, ‘They explosed. nd other necessities. larger. In from the latter are two smaller cavities, and these comprise the extent of former explorations. In them have been found at various times in the past relics of Indian ocou- patlon, including arrows and skeletons, of the cave, evidently fashioned by human hands. This latter room is described as beingof marvelour beauty. 1t is irregular in shape, and is fall of all the various forms which the action of 1ime has the power to create. In one of these rooms is a group of al- most perfect statuary. It consists of a large block of limestone fn the ahape of @ man, woman, and child, the man being in the cenfre, 853 alsg having the closest -egemblance to bumanity. Ty head is especlally like nat of s man, baving the feat- ures almont distinet and_ surmounted by a hat. A short distanco away from the groun in the fickering candlo-light the illusion is ssid to be abaolutely perfect. At this point the oave disclozes the strange feature of being two-storied, to reach the lower rooms of which it was mnec essary to descend by means of ropes. Here the extent of the old explorations cease, and the sdvontur- ers had 10 bo careful lest scme new and strange feature of the cavo cause them trouble. In ono of a group of three lower rooms was found a h: stalagmite, which was instinctively called Pompey's Pillar. It is thres foet in dismeter at the base, and les- aens gracefully in size to the reof of tho cave, thirty feet high. This is probably 600 feet below the surfuce. Erom the rooms last mentioned a cor- ridor leads to a very large and irregu- lar cavity, and from this small cor- ridors lead to vory beautiful rooms, which wero given the names of dif- ferent members of tho exploring par- ty. The one asmei for Mr. Coyno s the largest in the cave. From what was named “Halo’s Room” tho party followed 'a steeply-inclined tunnel seventy-fivo or eighty feot long, which terminated in a large abyss sixty or seventy feet in disme- ter. After lowering one of the party. down the perpendicular sides from 4o’ moutts “or the tunnel as far as the remaining rops would permit (sbout seventy feet), and failing to tind bottom, the explorers named it the “Bottomlecs Pit,” and retraced their steps to the surface, resolving to return st some future time and see “what thero was in it.” The explora- tion of the “‘Pit” will reveal some strange features, as there must be some outlet to the oren air at the bottom. Mr. Coyne stating _that, while the air was oppressive and stal at a number of the remoter recotses of the cave, the atmosphere in the *Pit"” was fresh and good. Advice o a Young Man. Burdette.
