Metalic Cases, Cofins, Caskete, Shrouds, etc. 4,280,933, and in 1878, 4,139,040, showing that the number of French people who have invested some por- tion of their savings in the govern- ment obligations {s approaching that of the freeholders. A population ot this character is not Very sensitve to forelgn competition. Nevertheless, the fact that American wheat beet can be bought in Frauce chesper than the mative products has led thoughtful economists In that country to survey with some anxiety the pros- pect opened up by the rivalry of the western world. Ina recent issue of The Journal des Debats M. J. de Reinach prescnts some statlstics of the comparative cost of production fn the two countries. He gives in detail the items of ex. pense in cultivating ong hectare (2.47 acrer) of wheat in Texas and in France, Wil the exception of a | nareow strip of land in_the western part of the atate, the soil of Texas is not sdapted to wheat-growing, but for M. de Reinach’s_purpose it furnishes a8 good_a point of eompariscn as any, fur the sost of reisihg a bushel of wheat there is about the edme as in the northwest. From one hnetsfe the Texas farmor gets 28 hectolires, (655 bushele) costing 7i. 68¢ per hectolitre. " | The yield In France is but 15 hectoll- tros, costing 21f. 43c. hectolitre, or not quiet threo fimes as much as in Teans. Bib siter the wheat is hatvested a crop of crn can be raised in Texas—20 bectolitres, cost- ing 8f. 60c per hectolitre. For trans- porting thete two crops to France, 8L de Reioach adds 6F. per hectolitre. The Awmerican famer, then, sells in French mackets asthe produtt of one heetare of land 20 hestolitres of wheat —which have cost 274f., delivered— at 21F. the hectolitre, and 20 hegtolitres of corn, cobting 142”., at 11£. 60c the hecto'ftre. Thos the net profit on one year’s product of his 2.47 acres is 236F., o 47, while the French farmer must be content to sell his 15 hectoli- tres of wheat for just what it costhim, receiving no profit whatever. It cannot bo suid bf this compari- sot, as bf Messrs. Read and Pell's re 1t to the British parliament, tnat it under-estimates the productivenees of American soil or the profits of the farmers who (ill it. - Bug if we ohit the after-crop of cofn, the Temainder of the statement may be accepted as falr and truthful, though some French writers not o well {nformed as Mr. de Reinach have cherged him with ex- aggerating tho possibilties of Amerl- can agricultnre, Thets is no dispo- sitfob o {uestion the accuracy of his statements as to the large outlay and amall return of the French farmer, but it does not appear that this con- dition of things 1 dus wholly to American cpmpptition) as seven times within the last Liventy yesrs the aver- sge tiinual price of wheat in France has touched the point where the pro- ducer's pr:fit vanishes, and this before American wheat had found its way to French markets. Now that our export trade in breadstuffe is firm- ly established, however, the farmers of France must prepare to meet as & permanient condition what hashitherto been exceptional. In no yem which Amerlcan soil has yielded a fair crop can the prico of woeat in the marketa of Paris rise much above the as the coat of production thero— 311, the heotolitrs. From the wheat field the comparlson, may be carried to thestock-yard. The daily cost of the fodder for fattening an ox in France is 1f. 80.; for a cow, 930.; for asheep, 13c. In Texas it costs for an ox 70.; for the cow the same, and for a sheep 0. Durisg the first seven months of the present year Amerlca sent o Frauce 1,249 live oattle, 1,858 sheep, snd 625 hogs. This is but » beginning, compared with our exportations to England; but it opens the way to greater things. In the first nine monthsof the year France imported 641,176,000¢. worth of grain and flour, of which a large porlion was drawn from Americs, 2old belng shipped to pey for it. These facts prove incontestably that $he products of our soil are pushing their way into all quartera of the world, sud every yesr finding out new markets But they by means prove that French agriculturo is to be ruin- od by us,or_ that a high tariff on breadstufls and provisions will be re- uired to protect it. Indeed, the means of defense already suggested aro of quite another kind. The French government patronizes and aids agri- figures given by M. do Reinach |, grass n fattening stock and increas- ing the milk of cows. And most peo- ple kuow that from one to_two-thirds of the substance and nutrition which the cattle find in their food comes direct from the atmosphere and_rain, and not from the earth. It isalso generally well known that dried fod- d |der of every description i much lighter in weight and less in bulk than the green stoff, yet it is only within the last two years that it has oceurred to one in this country that it these three facts were put togetber, the conclusion would be reached t about one-half of all the food Guali- tien of fodder ave lost in the cuking of it by the process of drying, and that if it were preserved in & gréen state it ‘would be twice as valuable for feeding in the winter than when dry. This has led to a further investigation of the fodder question, and some of our agricaltural papers have found that in ¥rance thero is perfect system of preserving green fodder in goheral use, which had been Introdaced by the French army on its return from Mex- ico in 1867, The Mexicans in turh rqni’ud ‘this process of treating fod- er from the Spaniards, who bad learned it from the Romans. As practiced by the French the pro- cess is as follows: A cellar with stone or brick air tight walls is constructed of capacity sufficient_to hold as many tons as desired, Thisls called a silo, aud it s filled with green corn-stalk fodder cut fine by chopping machines run by horse or steam power. Over tho topof the oorn. stalke ia placed s tight layer of boards, on which are placed stones, logs of other heavy weights tntil the fodder beneath is pressed Into s compact mass, which being entirely preserved from the air remains for séveral months in about the same condition of freshness as when cut, and is called evsilage. When opened in the winter for the purpose of feeding stock, the ensilage is cut out with a hay knife and is found_to possess nearly all the good qualitios of new grass, Dr, John M. Basiley, of Massachusetts, was the first in this country to make any experis ments with eusilag>. In his report on the subject he says thathe found that he can raish frots forty to seventy- Bvo lows of sown corn stalk to the acre, which, when kept in a silo and fed to stock, is the equivalont of from twenty to thirty-seven and one-half tons of the best timothy huy. He predicts that when silos 8nd snsilage feedifig comes into goneral use “milk can be produced for one centsur quart, butter for ten cents a pound, beef for fonr cents per pouud, and mautton for nothing, if wool be at thirty cents per pound.” Were Dr. Bailey not inorsed by the president of the Mrssachusetts .gmflmx 80~ ciety and the bureau of agricultureat Washington, we should not-have given 80 much space to his wonderful claiws, Asit is, thequestion of silos and en- silage is of the very greatest impor- tance to such an extensive ¢heose and butter produtiog coutitry as we have in Northern Ohio. — A RARE COMPANION.
