He is a natural ranner, broad in the chest, trimly built and used to violent exercise from his vouth up. He st length began negotiations with Jack Haverly, through his man- ager, Mr. Englehart, but the latter ¢,)d him that the loss of £6,000 on the last race, horves vs. men, had dis- souraged them from new risks, and that people had become tired of pe- destrian contests, the sole purpose of which was to bleed the public. The same hall he had offered $20,000 for at the race mentioned, he now refused 10 takeas s free gift, for similar use. Mr. Haverly has the largest tent in the world, one-eighth of mile in cir- sumference which was procured for pedestrian contests and it is now lying idle. A megotiation with Cincinoati parties was pending and he offored Mr. Rockbud 25 per cent. of the profits if he would go there, but as the contract fell thorough with no arrange- ment was made with him. The *Skipper” had by this time found that he could not enter the O'Leary race without pawning his belt and going to expenses which in case of failure would leave Lim des- titute, and besides this the tricks prac- ticed upon the professionals were such a8 to require great watchful- ness, and he bhad no confidence in being sble to overcome 8o many obstacles without more funds than he had at his command. His “best hold” is the six days go- as-you-please, and ho says he knows he can make 600 miles in that time. Burns’ record is declsred to be too high by 100 miles, Hart’s was & “‘double-header,” and Rowell, Mr. Rockbud _says, never made 560 miles. For this reason his backers feel safe in betting $1,000 that no man can come up to his_record. Mr. Rockbud will go to work again, and for the present abandon the pro- fessional career of a ist.
