There is no Luxury Like That of Defective Sidewalks. 1t would seem that the froquent sidents from dangeroue and defect] ive alks and grossly neglected streets, which have lately occurred to the disgrace of municipal marage- ment in this city, would euggest to the proper authorities some preventative in the premises. A truo regard for the eafety of the citizan, not to say bis comfort, should make the council at- tend to this matter. It would be the mesns of inepiring more confidence in their leglslative ability, and at the same time keep many s heavy judg- ment against the city from the court docket. The latest case in point is that of Mrs. Mary Sylvester, who resides on Eleventh street, near Harney. On the cvening of the 20:h of November, between. the hours of nine and ten she Jeft her residencs to call on her was’s woman, who resides on the up- per portion of tho cld “Star House,” on the south side of Harney, between 12th and Idh. After transacting her business she descended to the sidewalk avd turned to go Lome. Just east of the building a large por- tion of the walk has been entirely ramoved, snd iostesd have been placcil a fow narrow boards, to which thero is a dangerous descent of nestly & foot. These boards sre roughly nd right in the centre holes, from two to threo feet in length, and from four to six inches wide, making a moat dangerous pitfall ev in_ the day time, d, strénge to say, th condition of affairs has existed on oue of the most public strects of the city for several months. Mra. Sylvester stepped into one of these holes; her foot became cntan- od therein; she was thrown to the ground, and suffered a complete frac, ture of the right limb just at the knee joint. Being a fleshy woman the fall and injury were doubly severe. Her cries atiracted two gentlemen who wero passing, and they hurriedly ne sisted Mrs. Sylvester to her home. There she lay in the greatest pain un- til the mext night. Being ontirely without means, she sent for Col. E. F Smyth: the services of Dr. injury receised attention, Tho pov- erty of Mes. Sylvester adds to ber misfortunc, and notwithstanding care Ler sufferings are able. The “Fire King” Exhibits its Powers to Guests From the Capital, ‘Who are Divided Between a Silsby and an Ahrens Machine. Since the putchase of the ‘Fire King” from the Ahrens Manufactur- ing company, of Cincianati, by the city of Gmaha, she has been used as a model for exhibition toall the city authorities round about who were con- templating a similar purchase. She has been tested for the benefit of Blair aud Cou il Blaffs, and to-cay her ;20d qualities were exhibited be- fore the mayor and city council of Lincola, who came up on the morning train over the B. & M. The party included Mayor Jobn Wright, Chief of Police Lyman; T. P. Quick, chief engineer; Harry Ho- man, foreman; R. C. Maaly, city clerk; J. L. Caldwell, chairman of the committee on fire, and Council- men John Doolittle and Fred Corne. Pablic opinion down at the capital is divided between the Alreus and the Silsby. They have cne Silsby, the size of the ‘Fire King,” and the vew engine, of whatever make it is, is to be a size larger. The test was made at 2 o'clock this after- noon at the old Grand Central cistern on 14th street. Owing to the fact that th> hose could mnot be laid straight, but got ‘kinked,” and bursted, the time made was not s good as it might have been. From tho time the fire was lighted until there was 80 pounds of steam on but 3 mivutes elapsed aud water was thrown from the nozzle, through 200 feet of hose ina little over four minules. Whatever the impression on the visitors was they did not give it away. They lofton the afternoon train for home.
