This Morning’s Fire on Daven- port and Nineteenth Streets. Past Year. About 10 o'clock yesterday 3| o «pormanent Home® Hoped fire was discovered in the rear of the os cottage occupled by Mr. P. Manning, % on Davenport street, corner ot Nine- teenth. The smoke was first seen issuing from a stack of hay, which was situated direc'ly on the alley between Davenport snd Chicago, and was held in placo by a few scantling placed about it. As the fire was down be- tween the acantling and hay and there had been no one connected with the place sbout, it is lmost certain that it was the work of an incendiary. 1t was discvered by a servant girl, who called some paseers-by to heraid, while some oneelse was dispatched to the nearest telephonc, from which an alarm was sent in to tbe central office and thenco to No. 3's house. The alarm was then rung fzom box 16, and was responded to by Stesmers No. 1 and 2, and the hooks. On arrivingat the ground the latter soon tore the barning hay and boards apart, sed a stream of water wes turned or woich jiashort time cffectually quenched From the very intercsting anuual report of the general secretary of the Y. M. C. A., Mr. George T. Howser, for the association year of 1879-'80 just closed, we obtain the following facts showing the work done in Omsha during the past year: The general secretary csme to this city a perfect stranger, and conse- quently found it necessary to familiar- ize himself with names and foces, the location of the city and otaer details requisite to perfect work. That this has been accomplished we think the report will show for itself. Upon the arrival of Mr. Howser Omahs, care of the . M. C. A, rooms in Williams black devolved upon him, and the at- tendance of readers aud visitors for the first month was astonishingly low —only minety. It was determined that the association rooms must be moved, and accordingly October, '79, saw a change of headquarters to 1410 Faroham street, from which in May, 1880, another move was made, to the present location, Hubermann’s block. thefire. The at tion at our young men’s meeting, cays the gemeral secretary, for twelve months is 4,379, The at- tendance at all cur meetings of a gospel, eocial and literary nature has ‘been 12,318, while the attendance at reading rooms and meetings has been 25,091 The SOCIAL WORK of the association has beea compara- tively overlooked. ~One of the sccial cfforis of our lady friends made in our behalf on the first of January last, remains yet in the memory of many as one of the most pleasant events of the year, Nearly 500 callers were received and every one was bappy. Socials of a differont naturo have been held at the rooms during the year aud have been productive of much good. Special attentien will be given to this department during the coming season. The EDUCATIONAL WORK which has stood out in such glowing lotters among other Y. M. C. A.’s has been impaired only for want of a suit- able place for classes to meot. At the season of the year when such classes can be most successfully used, we have boen in want of room, what we are 5o thuch in need of now. Last winter the only class we had was in vocal music, 1 ad we the room now three good classes could be organized— ove in penmanship, book-keeping and stencgraphy, and with oxcellont teachors, We partially look forward to the time all our wants will be sup- plied.
