A Memorable Night in the Gateway to the West. Probably there never before was an oceasion of such geveral and enthusi- astic rejoicing over any event in Omaha asWecnesd: y witnessedin co™a sequence of the successful issue of the presidential campaign. It was like Fourth of July, Washington's birth- day, St. Patrick’s day, Christmas and Thaukegiving combived, and republi- cass, without regard to age, sex, race, color or previous condition, were per- fectly wild with enthusiasm and joy. At 7 o'clock the clans begun assem bling in front. of the Academy of Mu- sic, where torches were to be served Hage bonfires were built at the intersection of 13th and 14th streets wi'h Dougles and beyond these a die- play of fireworks was made by privete part®s. The band of the Ninth regi- ment came down i full force and the old reliable Union Pacific baud graced the occasion with their presence. At 7:20 o'clock theprocession was formed four deep along Douglas, right resting on Fourteenth, the firat division commanded by Col. E. F. Smythe and headed by the Military Band; the second division commanded by Maj. Geo. . Dosne and led by the Union Pacific band. Al the torches belonging to both parties were eerved out aud there not being half enovgh, men fell into the ranks without them, until fally two thousand people were in line, when the march begun. At this time the strects were densely thronged with people, it was impossis ble to press along the side-w: the city had the aspect of having sev- eral Moody and Saukey congregations turned loose on each block at one time. One continual cheer resounded from one end to the cther of the line of march, while the horrible noise of tin bhorns almost drowned ouf the magnificent music played by the bands. The Academy had been thrown open in the meantime and before 8 o'clock there wasnota seat lefc unoccupied aund every inch of standing room was taken. The procession marched and coun- ter-marched throngh all the principal streets, making an imposing spectacle aud one ealulated to arcuse all the parriotism possessed by the average Awmerican citizen. New bonfires werc kindled along the route until the city waz one blazs of light, her streets a flowing strevm of fire and tho heart of every republicin an altar on wh ch Durned such patriotism as is always an acoepiable eacrilice to the god of bat- tles aud the prince of peace. It is impossible to deseriba the joy mani- fested by all and which was eviuced by every one according to his or her inclination. At length the proceesion hailed ang a vana with a full complement of speakers was left at the Academy, after which a grand “overflow” meet- ¢ was held at the democcatic siand 14ch street, kindly loaned for the occasion, in front and no less than five thousand peisons as- sembled to Lear addresscs from v, ious prominent men from Owaha and the state at large. At the Academy the exercises of the ‘evening were exceadingly inter- esting. The Garfield and Arthur Glee club was present and sung its most in- icing songs, and the meeting was a regolar love feast, or “camp fire,” would be more appropriate to call it. Five minute speeches were made by Senator Saunders, Generals Mander- son and Cowin, Col. Smythe, Hon. John L. Webster, Judges Hawes and Peatody, Messs. Kyner, Bartlott, Chase, Moores and others, and the crowded gallerles and auditorium re-. mained in deepest attention to the ond of the meeting, exoapt when tho roof was fairly raised by som. remark or point msde which was considered especially good. The pames of Lincoln, Grant, Hages and Garfield were checred to echo, but, especially, that of thosilent hero of Appomattox and the New York campaign elicited a storm ef ap- plause every time. THE OVERFLOW MEETING on Fourtzenth street was a very en- thusiastle affair. The meeting was called to order by W. H, H. Llewel- Iyn, who called on Uol. Smythe to pre. side. Five minute speeches we e made by Col. Smythe, J. M. Taurs- ton, C. A. Baldwin, C. J. Greene, Hon. J. L. Webster, and D. G. Hull, Eaq., cf Lincoln.
