Fiat Land on a Fiat Agency, And Thereby Makinga Fortune |. Sheriff Guy, Mondsy srrested aman pamed Franklin Beyran, ona fugitive warrant issued from the court of Judge Anderson. Beyron was formecly a resident of this state and carried on an extensive land business, being agent for soveral different cor- porations inclading the B. &M. From Nebraska he removed to Iowa, locating at Burlington and carrying on much tae same kind of business. Gradually it bezan to be understood that he was not exactly straightiu all his trans- actions and one by one the companies he reprosented dropped him until he was left withcut any. He was not to be dsunted in this way, bowever, but constituted himself an agent, aod kept on his ol work, upona sortof fiat basis, Being provided with maps, blanks and the neceseary paraphernalia of a land agent, and possessing a fand of knowledge concerning the country where his fiat posseesions were lying, he traversed the various states in the east with ignal succees, selling land which was not his to eell, and some- times land that didn’t exist at all. It is said that he grew rich st the busi- ness, and is well fixed sbout his home in Burlington. | Beyron’s last trip wae, it is said, in Michigan, where he Toped n a num- ber of Beandinavisnis, his fe'low-couti- trymen, giving them papers, purport- ing to be gond for ceriain lands and taking from one-third to one-half down in cash on the purchase price. Such were the proportions of his busi- ness that it is eaid he rescived throngh the mails from §400 to 500 dsily, his purchasers being invariably good for all they contracted to pay. At last, however, they got the drop on him, a a party to whom he had sold land coming ont to this state, and finding thathe had been badly sold, and that Me. Beyron's land existed, like his agency, purely in his mind. Com- plaint wasmade sgainst him ia the courts of Michigan, for obtaining money under falso pretenses, and a aquisition was cbtaiued en the gover- norof Towa for the possession of the man if found at home, Ho got onto the racket, however, aud escaped. He was arrested in Des Moines and in S0me mysterious manner got away from the officer. Since that he has been flitting to and from, be- ing heard of i some mew plece daily, visiting in this way Bar- lington, Omaha, Chicago and Kear- ney. The B. & M. officials, some of whom had suffercd at his hands were hot after him and were the cause «f in final arrest. On being brought before Jadge An- derson this morning the defendant got a continuance until the 30 h inst., at 4 o'clock. On Friday evening of last week the state sseociation of beekeepers met at the court room tolisten toa lecture from Mr. Newman, editor of the Na- tional Bee Keepers' Journal. Owing to the fact that the meoting wasnot sufficiently sdvertised and to the many other meetings and entertain- ments taking place about that time the attendance was quitelight, but those preseut heartily »ppreciated the rare treat thelestnre gave them. The lecturer after » few gouersl in- troductory remarks cafled attenticn to the fact not generally known, that n.o where on the globe is honey fond in such abundance as in our own land. Thee number of bee keepers in the United States is three hundred thou- sand, who have thres million etands of bees, a single colony of which has been kuown to gather 450 pounds in one season. The subject of the proper handling of bees was also discussed st length and many hints given. The neeessity of having a prolific quéen in the hive was urged, in order fo keep. up the stock of laborers, as hovey gatherers are a short-lived race, A worker seldom lives over forty dsys, the wear and tear of their wings be- ing 80 groat asto kill them within that period, and especially if they have to fly very far for their honey. Bees have been known to fiy a distance of ten miles to gather"honey, when ikere was notie to be found nearer the hive: A compreheneive discusslotiof ¢he it plements necesmry to successful bee keeping followed, but while very in- teresting to the profession, would fot be nderstood bo the general readef. Mr. Newman prophezied that the pure Italian bee would b6 the bes of the futufe. The importance cf suth ns 43 the Gne tiers being ad- dressed could not be over-estimated, and & carcful study and observation of thebee and its habits was an indis- pensible requisite to success. Allod- ing tothe copsumption of honey, he raid it wss wonderfal to see the hun- dreds upon hundreds of tons of honey sent to Eurcpa every season, to eay nothing of that consumed at home, The ingenious American bee keeper puts up his honey in such magniticent shape and condition, that the demand always exceeds the tupply. He had seen 300 barrels of extracted honey, from Awerica, at one time in Europe. In closing the speaker agsin touched upon the importance of & practical study of the science of bee cultare. The gathering was of the nature of a conference to consider the best plan for securing the money due them. Omaha is not alone the sufferer from cracksmen and safe blowers, as will be eeen by the following from The Nonpareil of yesterday: At half past 5 o'closl Sunday morn- ing, the hired man in the employ of Herman Sanders, of the Chicago butcher shop, while on his way to the slaughter yard, noticed the front door of John Mergen & Co.’s store on South Main street, standing open. Thivking something might be wrong he informed 2£r. S., who immediately aroused Mr. Mergen, and together they went fo the -store to find that the safs had been success- fully “blowed” and the smsll drawers with their contents in money and val- uablo papers carried away. It was the job of an - expert, but at the same time of some one who understood the situation, and was sufficiently posted to know about what might be captured in the safe, the odd change in the counter drawers being loft undisturbed. Enfrance was made by bresking the lock of the front door, efter which the bar was removed trom a side door to afford an easy way of escape. The main work of opening the safe had been a short job. in the usual way, by drilling a hole through tho outside casing of the door, blowing in powler and bursting the door from ita fastening by an ex- losion which failed to arouse Frank arn and family, sleeping in the back. room, The tools used by the cracksmen wer,!
