P—— A RUNAWAY LOCOMOTIVE. AX EXOITING INCIDENT ON THE 18- HIGH YALLEY ROAD. llentorn correrpondence Philadelphis Press, Soptowber 3. Anincident of a thrilling andat the sams time tingular niture tock place last eveninz cn the Lehigh Valle railroad. The patticuiars are as fo] lows: The engire Antelops, No. 47, with half 8 dozen fat cars, cne of which was in front of the locomotive, was studing on the track at Fuller n, sbout two miles above this city. Tuis was the coustruction train and il crew were reparring the down ‘rack. They neelectod to have thelr flag out to tivnal approaching trains d the engiaeer and fireman were off the engive. About b o'clock, No. 43 freight train, Philip Lauer, engineer, came_thusdering along, and before & coilision: could be avoided ran into the construction train. The engineer and fireroan jumped off before the crash took piacs, the former breakingalegand tke latter escaping with a few brushes. The force of the collision was so great that the “‘pulling-bsr” connecting the engine Autelope with its tender was suapped in two. The concussion forced the throttle open, and the Antelope, with the flat-car in front, dnshod off st a lively apeed, the labor- crs on the track barely escaping with heir lives. The ranaway locomotive went fsster every moment, and fairly flew along the track, to the cousterna- ion_and surprise of the laborers on the live. In a minute the Allentown Furnace was reached, and passed the immense establishment of the Allen- ‘own Rolling Mill company sped the engine with lightning rapidity. Sev- eral men here narrowly eecaped being run over. A dispatch was sent down the valley to switch off the runaway sid run 1t aground, but before this could ba accomplished, the engine, when near the Allentown depot, over- 100k a coal train, and dashed iuto it with a frightfl force, Fora moment the air was filled with fiying coal, broken cars, hissing steam, etc., and % scene of indiscribable confusion followed. Of course, the run- away came to astand-still. The flat- car was hurled from its truck and lsnded some distance from the track ina demoral'zed condition. The cow- cacher, emokestack and cab of the Antelope were badly broken and the locomotive machinery more or less damsged. The two resr coal cars were demolished and their contenta thrown around promiscuously, some of the coal being hurled into the air to altitude of seventy-five feet or more, The track was obstructed for an hour, | when general traficwss resumed. The | freigat engive was considersbly dam- aged azd one freight car was thrown off the track. Bothengines have been sent to the thovs »t South Easton for repairs. Mr. Lauer the engineer of the freight train, was taken to St. Luke's hospital at South Bethlehem, where amputation_was performed duringthe night, He lives at White Haven snd has & family.
