Douglas county voted snd donated six hundred thoueand dollars in aid of railronde, and the city of Omaha voted two hundred thousand dollars of city bonds for the purchase of the U. P. depot grounds. xor sbout t years the tax payers of Omaba end Douglae county have been bled to the tune of ecighty thoa- sand dollars = year to gmeet the interest on the railroad debt, not counting the large sum collected for the sinking fund. By the time the enticn bonded debt incurred for the benefit of railrosd corporstions by this city and county has been liquida- tcd, the enormous sum of over two willions of dollars will have been exacted from the tax-payersof this <ty and county for the benefit of tbe railroads. This sum represents the equivalent of twenty thousand dol- Jare boous to each of two hundred factories. In other words, with the sum of money which Omsha and Douglss county tax payers will have peid for the benefit of the railroads, they could have establiehed two hundred factories and paid each of them twenty thou- wind dollars tostart with, If each of these factories bad given employment to & hundred operatives Omaha would have afforded steady employment to twenty thousand mechanics and ls- borers, and it is fair to estimate that these twenty thousand working men would have increased the -population of this city by fally fifty thousand. While we admit that Omaha has dr, rived material benefits from the rail- roadsfand will continne to do e, wo insist that we are entitled by tle immense bonuses we bae given these corporations to the benefit of the tixes due from their property in prc- yortion to its value. We insist thit the railroads shall be compelled {o bear their share of the burden of spe- cixl taxes for improvements adjacent to their property, such as pavements, scwerage, eto. Under the new law all railroad pro- perty including depot grounds, depot b sildings, machine shops and ware- houses are classed with rolling stock aud equipments as personal property and sre lumped with the roadway ina general estimate. This exempts the roal estate of railroads from epecial taxation as well as from the general Jooal taxes. It is simply outrageous that real estate owners of the Firet wnd Second wards of Omaha should B> compelled to pay the entire cost «f the South Omnha sewer and the rai'- roads should not pay a dollar toward this improvement, when they own fully one-sixth of the resl estate in t.ose wards. 1f the law is mot rc- poaled, and the oouncil mext yesr +hould decide to pave Tenth street, ~hich passes right in froat of the de~ yot grounds, the owners of Tenth +t-cet lota would have to pay the en. vire paving tax, and the railroads ~ould nct pay a do'lr, although the ) avement would b. laid maipiy to give batter access 1o eir own ~eounds. —_— Oxama showed her co ors well in 120 front at Oamp Baford. The vic- t ries of the Union Pacific band and 4 smpany G, were deservedly earned ® 1d testified to the proficiency of those «-ganizations. — Ix Jooks now something like the cel- « rated serenade given to Marehsl ) sllow. Like Ballou, Dr. Miller hes 3 - further use for his enemies. —— Evzer telgraphicdispatch plucke o 4 atber from the tail of the democrat- £ rooster. i NOR'HERN DOUGHPACES. It is eminently in accord with the eterns] fitness of things for the editor of the Herald to defend the census teauds of the south by declaring that there were also frauds in the north. Northern men elwsys did make the most cruel slzve drivers and northern democratic editors are the mcst bra- zen apologists for southern infsmies. The way the southern heart was fired just before the war was by the incen- diary eppesls to the elave driver egainst the hell hounds of aboliticn, as they were called, In the New York Day Book. That peper was published in New York by acoaple of northern donghfaces wko made capital down south by ccllating every item of news that tended to thow northern sympathy forronawey slaves or expressed sentiments deroga= tory to the elovenly and shiftless mensgement of southern plantation, railroads and factories. The New York Day-Book was the Bible of the eouth- ern fire-eaters before the war, and did as much to precipitate the rebellion s the speeches of the Yancey'e, Toombs' and Benjamin’s. It is 0 mow. Themost disloyal and inflammatory sheets of the present duy are printed in the north by men of northern birth, who haven't the courage to do the fighting for the con- federates, bat bravely fight their bat- tles with the pen. For instance, the Detroit Free Press, a democratic paper published in the loysl state of Michi- gan, prints two distinot editions, one for home consumption, with moderate woll-gaarded editorials on the political iesues of the day; the other, known among the employes of the concern a8 the “‘rebel edition,” intended strictly for circulation down south. That edition, gotten up on the Brick Pomeroy model, represents the eonthern people as downtrodden, op- pressed and outraged, appeals to southern passions to avenge the Lost Cuuse, and holds out the promise of a restoration of the Confederacy to democratic domination. Of course this edition of the Detroit Free Press is not allowed to see dsylight in the state of Michigan, but down south it istaken as the regular edition of the Free Press, and us a fair sample of northern democratic sentiment. Now we concede thst the preat body of the morthern democrats are logal men, many of them have de- monstrated their patriotism and devo- tion to tbe Union during the late war. But the democratic pspers are for the most part edited by northern dough- faces who always cringe to the south- ern sristocrat and would black the boots of a confed brigadier at any time in order to show their devotion t5 the south. How any southern man can respeot such-lick epittles always has been o mystery. The cardinal principle of the confederates is that every American owes sllegiance to his native state above a'l his obli- gations to the government of the United States. Any northern man who professes to believe in state soy- ereiguty and then turns traitor to his own state and section can etand no higher in the estimation of a southern man than a southern man who has deserted the oconfederates. These northern doughface editors may get their reward some day for their trea- 01 10 thoie own acetion, but # will be when Loyalty becomes a crime and treason is classed among the virtues. We don’t propose to be personal in the matter, but it strikes us that Dr. Miller, » native of the Empire state cuts @ very exeorable figure among men of his own section when he be- comes the mouthpiece, apologist and champion of Missiesippi bulldozers Louisiana leaguer« and South Caro- lina census stuffers. Sexaros Huw, of Colorado, is one of the richest members of the United States reuate. He is chief owner of the Great Recuction works at Argo, near Denver, incorporated as the Bos- ton and Oolorado Reduction works Tt is expected that 1,000,000 tons of ore wil be reduced thersin the present yeor. This is 2- 470 tops cvery twenty-four hours. The value to the works will not be loss than $30 per ton, or $82,000 per per day, and 830,000,000 per year. If the average be put §50 per ton, and ths cost of workiog not over $5 for the same, the expenses are §5.000 000 for purchase against 50,000,000 for profit. The profits have been esti- mated in 1878 at $1,500,000; in 1879 as about §3,000,000, and this year at ubout §5,000,000. Tok New York press is agitated on the subjact of crammiog tn the public schools, and Richard Grant White is vigorously belaboring the school system of the city, which is declared to be ton years behind the west in matter: of instruction. Complaint is made that parents do not takea practical interest in the school room life of their children and bring their influence to bear on the teachers and school cfficers. Tux cotton crop of the present year shows @ remsrkable increase in the total crop, in the amount moved over- land snd in the home consumption. Five millions, seven hundred and Gfty-seven thousand bales were sold during the past year and nearly two million bales were consumed in the United States. Wheat is king and cotton queen. Kenosha hill is no longer the high- est railroad point inthe United States. The gradingon the western extension of the Denver & Rio Grande road, between Leadsills and Kokomo, where it passes over the Continental divide, is several hundred feet higher. Rails have been laid on the Jules- burg track. Thirty-five car loads of ties and iron are being received per day. The tracklayers are crowding the graders. The graders will be out of the way entirely in a few days and then the track-men can go shead for 40 miles. The mines of Sheep mountain are now showingup in a very flattering way.
