Sho had run away from home in Dallas, Texas, arriving in this city on Tueeday last* She took lodeings in the Monrce house, on Market sirezt, and remained ther# un: til that night, when she walked out Into thestreet and sauntered arqund, not knowing which way to go. While walking around she was arproaciied by a man who Importuned her to share 4 room with him that night, She was out of money, and having no place eles t0go, she accompani3d him to the Philiins est3tlishment. Ame feon Prorkmi, We find that the Cotswold are not healthy in large fl cks; that the Meri- nes, though herlthy and grest pro- duceks of wool, atdount to very little 35 mutton sheep. Tnen the Downs are splendid for mutton, but light, dry, shearers, Now, by a judicious g of three breeds, we get a every respect. #s the markets are present. A heavy shearer of medium or delsine wool, which brings the highest price The ‘mutton is ht for any Englich market, while the active habits antl imuroved constitution render them gocd feeders either on grass or grain. In getting up this cross I would take the best Cotswold ewes and use s large 0| Fronch Merino ram; then on the pro- duce of this breed a Shropshire or Southdown ram. There was a test made of the differ- ent breeds, two years ago, by Andrew Oliver, of Stark county, Il Ona flick of Cotswold ewes he used a French Merino, a Cotswold, and a Southdown fam, and found that the rams from the Southdown took the lead until they were six months old, the Cotswolds led until they were ten mouths old. But, at a year old, the Meriuo cross was equ 11 carcass, and eheared 10} pounds of wool of superi- or quality, while the others averaged 10 pounds. 1 fuliy endorse this statement, but would emphasizo tho value of the Southdown cross. They are extreme- ly hardy, and well adapted to our prairies. Cun The most important part of any crop is the seed planted. Seed corn isgen- erally negleeted at the proper timefor gathering, from the fact that usually any corn wiil grow, and few realize the difference between seed that has barcly sufficient vitality to germinate, and that which pos: the greatest degree of vitalit, o believe the time to gather seed corn to be before frost, and before the gathering of the matn crop. Select only the best filled ears, husk, leaving a few husks to tie up with, and hang up where the rats and mice cannot get it. Some have gathered seed from stalks bearing two ears, until they have established & habit of producing two eara. But we would rather have one good ear than two small ones. CORN FODDEE. Aswe predcied the hay crop Is light, but of fine quality, and we must make use of all the aids to piece ont the feed. The ‘‘ensilage” system, if made practical, will utilize the whole strength of the crop without loss. But forthe present, we must try to secure the shocks in the best possiblo way, as our high winds are aptto blow them over. Those who have not planted fodder corn will do well to cutup, at least, & part of the field crop, as the fodder is not only nutriti- ous, but of great benefit a8 a change of feed. e Choice Cows. Madigonian, 1f you wat & choice cow you must raiso her yourself. Thereis a good deal in tha breed, but more in the broeder. As to breeds, you have three choices—the Jerscy, the Shorn- horn, the Holstein. If you take the Jersey, you must count on your ateer calves being fit_only for veal. If you take the Short-horn you must see to it that you get into & family that has Dot been bred for beef excl Brother Gardner and the tnr Detrolt Frés Press. “I hez sccidently larned,” Brother Gardner, of the Lime-kiln club, s3 the meeting opened, ** dat the local members of our club am makin' up a shake purse to buy me an ile paintin’ as a present. 1 hope the keme will stop short.
