Her best efforts were with a muntla cevering the key-board and herself blindfolded, in which condi- tion she can play her music as well as with free eyesight and naked key-bosrd. Littls Ella is without doubt the greatest musical prodigy ever placed on the state, and it is a plessure 10 know +hat she is an Iowan. It was then found that the cries, which had before been undis'ingnieh- able, wers intended as sn alarm of fire, the people uttering them being unable to speak English. One of the men who came up at that moment was gent to the nearest fire slarm box, whilo the cry of “‘Fire, fire!” raug throvgh Farnem street, was caaght up by the policemen, and in this way reached the Sixteenth strest engine house. Al this while, the fire, which at first was a little blaze in the bak- ery in the basement, kept growing hotter and hotter and burst through the door cn Harney street. The fire was 80 hot that the few who wera on the spot, had water and buckets bees tand, could have accomplished very littls, and all that rematned to do was to await the arrival of the fire dopert- ment. Soon the bell of the Cathe dral began tolling, and people came rushing to the place. The fire was soen to creep through the basement, and & bit of breeze just then spring- ing up fanned the flames, which socn enveloped the porch on Harney streor, and the fiery tongues licked through the first floor, 80 that when the fire men arrived the whole building was ail ablaza. Though it seemed an in- terminable long while before water was thrown on the fire, the work of the firemen was remarkably rushed, the flro soreading tncredibly fast Those who werein the building at the time, the family of Schlank, who kept a second.hand clothing store, had little time to spare in get1ing out,and then, half dressed, succeeded in draggiig out perbaps $100 of their stock. There wasdanger of the fire com- ‘municating to the row of small build- ingson the west, and willing hands quickly cleared them of al! things movable, but the firemen did effuct- ivo work and the fire was kept with- in the limit of corner building, Tho elarm was given that a large quntity of cartridges was mored in° the shop and a scramble of epectators followed and none too soon, for shortly a lutle cannonading was started which caused those, who did not know the cause of the explosion, to rush pell-mell up ordown Tenth street. These vol- leys were kept up for some few min- utes, fortunately no one being injur- ed. The buildiog was owned by F. Wirth, who purchascd it only on Tuesday last for §1,200.
