Between eightand umo 'clock every | clear evening there may now be seen, a Little north of east, & large and bril- liant star which, familiar as it is to all ns, is_slways a " Tt has re- ceived—and well deserves—the name of “the gisnt planet;” it mass exceed- very considerably that of all other | planets in our system combined. A few facts iu regard to this celestial wanderer—drawn from the latest and beet astronomical suthorities—may be interesting 1o our readers; though to the ' scientific portion they will, of courae, lack the element of novelty. Jupiter exceeds the earth in yolume about thirteen hundred t mes; in mass about two hundred and times. This shows that his specific gravity is much lesa than that of the earth; less, indecd, than that of wa- ter. His mean diameter is about 85,- 000 miles; but in consequence of rapid rotation on his axis, the equatorial exceeds the polar diameter by 5000 miles. His mean dis ance from the sun is 480,000,000 miles—that of the earth is sbont 92,000,000—but the ec- s ual cistance range between 457,000, 000 and 503,000,000. The Jovian year, orperiod of revolution round the sun, is fifty days less than twelve of our years. The Jovian day is about nine hours and fifty-five and a halfminutes. Telezcopic examination shows two belts, or bands, stretching across the disk of the planct; one light and the other dark. They are ofa frequent changes, seldom presenting the same appearancs on two successive nights. In fact, they may be consid- ered as one belt or band, and are sup- sed to be vaporous or cloud-like formaifons produced by causes not yet thoroughly understood. It is be- Tieved by those most competent to ex- press an opinion on the difficult sub- Ject, that Jupiter is not yet covered with a solid crust, like that on which we live, but is in a liquid or gaseous condition, as our earth once was. It seem certain that the interior has an excerdingly high temperature, almost a8 great as that of the sun. Iuno other way can the rapid changes no- ticeable on the sarface be accounted for. Ttis also strongly suspected thut Jupiter shiues partly by his own light; though what proportion of the light'is origival, and how much is borrowed from the sun, is not yet as- certained, and probably never will be. “The gisut planet” is attended by four satellites, or moous, whose di- ameters—as nearly as they can be es- timated—range between twenty-two hundred and thirty-seven hundred miles. The diameter of our moon is twenty-one_hundred and sixty wiles These satellites ure specially iaterest ing to non-scientific paople on account of their association with Galileo. They wero among the earlicst dis- coveries of that great and sorely per- secuted astronomer, having ben found by him with his first rude tele- scope. Some of them at least cav be seen when the atmosphere is clear, by the aid of a good opera-glass; and it is claimed that exceptionably strong eyes have seen them wiihout assist- ance. Galileo's discovery was re- ceived with incredulous scorn_ by the scientists of tha diy. One of them, med Clavius, insisted tnat it was an optical delusion. He, however, locked and was convinced. A more obstinate philosopher declined to use the tele- scope lest he should be cenvinced, and died an unbeliever. When Galileo heard of his death he quietly re- marked, “Thope he saw them while on his way to heaven.” The satel- lites ara too small and too distant for accurate examination of theirsurfaces, nor can_their sudden and surprising changes in brillisncy bs satisfactorily explained, though mauy ingenious theories have bean propounded. This year Jupiter wil be in tion October 7. (Planets are said to e in opposition when their longitude differs 180 degrees from that of the sun, 8o that they rise at sunset and thirteen | centricity of hie orbit makes the act- | very complex charaoter and undergo | hun'ered y'ars can relize the change Tks. A Gold-Backed Spider. Virgiia City (Nev ) Chronicle. A case that strongly reminded soma people of Poo's atory of “The Gold Bug,” turned up in the court of Jus- tice Moses recently. A Mra. Turner, residing at No. 187 North Howard street, found the gold watch and chain belonging to ex-Officer Kinzle in her water cloget abont a week ago. She told the neighbors of her discovery, and this coming to the ears cf the | officers, caused an investigation and | the recovery of the property. Mra. | Turner testiied that she found the | watch while hunting fora pot spider. | This morning a Chronicla repcrter called at her house and she gave a more explicit account of the spider. About a year ago_she noticed that a {large black spider has located its |web in one of the upper corners of the water closet. The insect woa marked with & large gold spot on its back, and Mrs, Turner bocame impressed with the idea that the gold spot was sign of gaod luck.
