All | ued extras, the Argus | the papers is ve cditions. Some obscurity surrounds the action of the police on Saturday night after the death of Sherritt. According to the sccount of the stition master at Glenrowan, the gang only left Sher- ritt’s hut at 6 o’clock in the moraing. Aughow, information only reached Beechworth at 1 o'clock in the after- noon. The police and back-trackers immediately started in_pursuit. The latter were leaving for Queensland on the following day,and the government obtained permission to retain them. On leaving Sherritt’s the gang evi dently made for their old haunts, but expecting the alarm to be given much sooner by the police, stopped at Glen- rowan, awoke the station master ond | buret tae door of a house previously bailed. Several employes of the rail- way were then summoned, and the vlate layers compelled to tear up the line for half a mile on each sideof the station. The gang, however, omitted to interrupt the telegraph. Hart was meanwhile watching Stainstreet, the station master. The gang eventualy bailed up the whole station, confining their prisoners in Mrs, Jones' hotel, fifty yards from the station, relieving guard by turns, They remained in posseesion sll Sunday. A epecial train, with a party of newspaper men, police and backtrack- ers, started from Benalla to the scene of the outrage, but stopped short of the township, as the gang had torn up the track at a curve in the road, ou one side of which wasa deep ravine. The intention was to ditch the train and massacre the survivors. Thisde- sien miscarried. On the arrival of the train at the depot a shot was fired, and the police and backtrackers were s00m engaged with the gang. Super- intendent Hare was wounded at the first shot. About sixty shots were fired through the weather-boards of the hotel, when the screams of the women and children induced the offi- ers to discontinue. After a pause, the action cntinued, the outlaws keeping up steady fire on the offi- cers. Two children—a boy and girl— were wounded. Reinforcements hav- ing arrived, & heavy volley was poured into the house, aud Byrne, one of the gang, was fatally shot. Ned Kelly, the leader, left the hotel during the fight, and returned in_the morning. It was nearly 8 o’clock when his tall figure was seen close behind the line opened a new record of civil achiovement 88 great in its way o8 the stroggle for national exis'ence. Tt roconstracted the temols of the na- tional life, which 1t had defended from sssault until it was disordered | and sbattered. 1t restored the unton of states, which tad becn broken, and restored exch commonwealth to its old place, purged of the ancient wrong and with a new meaving given to the commonplaces of popular freedom and equity. It restored the wreck which war had made of the ma- terial inte-ests Of the coun- uy. It continved the sicrifices which had enabled it to carry on the war, boldly projected the taxation of war time far into the teason of peace to restore the Dational finances and maintain the national credit. It has reduced the national debt one- quarter since the war closed, and the snnual burden of interest charge one- half. It has jealously guarded the national cr-dif, resisted all tempta- tion to reckless financiering, rigidly reduced the papor iesues of tho war and restored ths treasury notes to par withgold within fourteen years after the war closed. It haslabored to place the public service and the civil administration upon a higher glane, and, as its latest achievement, has taken the first steps in the history of the gevernment to destroy the en- trenched syatem ©f & political civil ervice and make tenure of office de- pend upon honesty and capacity. While the republican party has boen doing this, the democratic party has simply resisted it av_every step. It has had no principles since 1865, and that half of it too cowardly to fight for its principles has had none since 1860. It resisted the prosecution of the war for the Union. It resisted the execution of the re- construction policy afterwards. It re- sisted the payment of the public debt and the restoration_of specie pay- ments, and gave its countenance to every wild and foolish finan- cial experiment which has been suggested to impair tho national crodit under a pretense of popular re- lief. It has resisted every beneficent measure of public policy which the republican party has presented for twenty years, without offering any- thing for itsel. Republican Registration. His Liead, chest, back and sides were all protcied with heayy plates of quarter-inch iron. When within eary 01 distance of Sonior Constable Kelly, who was watching him, he fired. Tho police then kuew who he was, snd fired on the rafian. Then Sereant Steele rapidly closed in on him, and when within only about ten yards of him e fired two shots into his legs, and_this brought the outlaw down. He was ouly wounded, and appeared still deter- mined to carry on the desperate con- lict, but Steele bravely rushed in and seized the hand in which Kelly held s revolver, the only weapon with which he was armed. ~ Ho fired ono shot after this, but without effect. The prisoners meanwhile es- caped from the hotel, and the fixht was renewed, Cannon was telegraphed for. Reov. Father Tierney asked Kel- iy's sister togo to the house and tell her brother to surrender. This young, woman, well mounted and becomingly dressed, said she would rather sce him burned in the houss than ask him to surrender. The firing was renewed, and at length, in the presence of 200 spectators, the house was set on fire. Father Tierney rushed in amidst the tlames and rescued an old man named Sherty, one of the prisoners, who b been badly wounded, also the body ot Byrne. Two other outlaws perished in the flames. The country people retained the bodies and threatened vengeance on the police. However, the Kelly gang is blotted out. The Two Partles. St. Paul Pioneer Press. Back of the two candidates for president stand the two_parties which put them forward as their representa- tives or thier masks. Vastly more im- portant than the personal records and qualifications of the candidates are the record and oharacter of the par- ties that seek succcss and power through them. He is an exceptional resident who escapes from the tradi tions and iufluences of his politi surcoundings, and makes his admi tra‘ion an expression.of his own per- sonali It either of the present candidates does this, it will not be he who is most superior to his party, who was least in sympathy with his polit- ical following. Gen. Hancock, as president, will not be permitted to be better than his party. Gen. Garfield will not try to be. He will merely try to represent and rule in accord- ance with the best common sense, morality and sagacity that is in1t. Tt behooves the voter to ask what are the parties which stand behind these can- didatesand what light does their char- acter and history cast upon the proba- ble policy of future governments con- trolled by them? And thislight must be sought in the history of the parties her than in the carefully prepared declarations of principles, framed to catch votes on the eve of election. It is not difficu't to find it there. The republican party has not had a long career, but it is full of events that make history. It cams into be- iag to fulfill a great mission and to right a great wrong. It tulfilled that mission in forum and field. Itgrap- pled the great wrong that was eating out the nation’s heart like an uleer, in the halls of legislation and justice, apd whenever the skirmish line of & popular election was_drawn. When political antagonism became civil war tha republican party rose to the height of the situation, took the reins of gov- ernment dropped by its cowardly or traitorous opponents, and held them travely and firmly through all the terrific crisis that followed. At home and abroad; in the field, in the capital, in tha legislative halls, in_ the courts, in foreign courts, and in the world's money mar- kets, the republican party maintained the integrity of the union, the free- dom of all ihe people and the honor and credit of the nation. This record is_closed; this mission fulfilled; but who shall say its glory and honor has Allen RC Avondet John ‘Anderson Jens Brewn ES Bonner James Bint Charles Bonarios F W Billings Jacob Bonner Charles E Brown J J Benson George Brown C.
