War H. Dramap, _— NEGRO ORATORY. AN IMPASSIONED SERMON AT A COLORED CAMP MEETING, York Herad. ben Christ was born in Bethle- hem,” eaid the Rev. Henry Dumpsen, at the colored camp-meeting near Mt. Vernon, Westchester county, a few days ago, ““there was a groat fuss made. It didn’t please Herod. Thar was nothing 'bout Christ that Herod liked. Ho didn’t like his fadder nor bis mudder.- He didn't beliebe Christ was de eon of God and dat he had de power to save. But Christ built up a house of God better'n any ob de houses on Coney Island, or Long Branch, or Rockaway. But no sinner can enter dat bouse, 'causo Jes: standin’ at de do’ to keep dem out 'ospt dey repent. If dey repent Christ by able. to de Jow, ds Gentile, de barbarian, and all de rest ob de sinners what cast his name to one side. But, my frien's, wo's all got to bo sabed; we's sll goin’ to enter de do; we's goin' to have a publio wendue and be sold out clean of ebbery thing dat don't plea: God; we's goin’ m dat do’ clean wash- ed wid de bloxd ob Jesus, clar down t1 de roots ob our har. He can make everything as white ss snow. De dying ‘thief ard de dyiog buccaneer beliebe in Christ, and was sabed eben under the cover of dark- ness. Dey saw Paradis on do cross, and war restored to de bosom ob de Lamb. Our religion ain’t popular enough, it needs de eaving grace. O! Lord, gib us do grace. Yes, lot do grice come from all de pations of de oarth. Dan’l war flung into the lion s den by order of the king because he prayed for dat cup not to comearound. But next morning when de king come around, and he came sroutd rarly, he saw dat Dar’l was not fastened in de lion's jaws, and he turned pale snd said, Oh, Dan’l sre you're ssfe?’ And Dan'l said, ‘Yes, Bah, I is.’ Dat was da power ob Christ. He's more powerful dan any man, He's more powerful dan de king. Yes, my friends. He more powerful dan de president. A few ears ago T was at Long Branch as- sistin’ a brother to build a church. He's heah to catch sinners by de har ana shake 'em into dn gospel path. I don't caro what men eay ’'bout e, or what women think; I's hapny in de wilder- ness, widout a trouble, whils Jesus am wid me. Jesus will pay for what is done. It makes no difference what you earn, you get your pay. The sermon was listened to with marked attention by a good audience of whites and blacks. Many white people went in their carrisges from New Rochelle, Mamaroneck, and Portchester, and a_goodly number of o lored and white peoplo were there from Harlem. At the conclusion of the sermon the colored people 3ang a number of stirring hymns, . receiving hearty appleuze fromt the visitors. The following were the most striking songs, the singiog of which made the wocds ring with nogro melody. Don't stay away, brother; Don't stay away, My Lord 'there’s room enough. ‘brother, There's room enough for you. When the singers struck up this bymn_there was considerable move- ment in benches, and it was apparent that some of the negroes who were camp-meeting veteraus wanted to get down in the straw in_front of the al- ter; but, as abont this time worldly laughing and talking were heard in the ‘‘watermelon tent,” the spirit seemed to be suppressed, and there was not a straw scene such as many expected and hoped to sec. This is another ¢f the soul-stirring hymns that were sung: 0O Lord, let me bathe in the river, 0 Lord, let me bathe in the river.
