A marriage has just occurred in high colored life near this city, from which & heavy law.suit is likely to follow. Old Edmon@ Skaty, whose “‘ole mars” was a_confederate senator during the war, lives down the river. He owns several hundred acres of rich bottom land, with plenty of mules and farming implements. ~Thus situ ated he drew around his home an air of refinement which his neighbors could not hope to rival. Old Ed. has only one child, & magoificent daughter, whose complexion in the depth of its extreme blacknass sug- gested the often quote stack of dark felines. Like the daughters of all rich men, Zoda attracted sttention. She could dance the twist heel waltz with a charming grace, or could wring off an old rooster’s head with an acceler- ation that the chicken could never hope to understand. Suitors eame ftom all directions The *‘yaller man” with the striped pants, and the black man with duck trousers were devoted toher. Old Ed. knew that money was the loadstone that attracted the needle of admiration, and having s complete understanding with the gir], he would, upon his arrival of suitor, stand him at ease by sayin, “Pufectly welcome, sab, pufectly; butafore yer begin dis race, jes let me tell yer to make yer ‘rangementh wid me. T'se administrator of dat {'s afections, an’ what Teays is do iaw 80’ de gospe] wid her," Th suitor wouly of gowies wires, the “saller man,” encouraged. “Yer know dat dars agwine to be a heap ob pain an’ trouble fur de mar- ried people ob dis worl!" “Yes, eah.” ““Ia dat 'vent a1l must be willin’ ter stan’ de sorted out shere. Lemmo take a holt ob yer arm wid my ter. I yer can stan’ de pain wid out winkin' de galan’ dis whole farm ehall be yous ‘I knows It is, but hits a mighty tough trial fur a man ter gin up all ob his wealth.” i “Dats a fac] Fix yer mouf, ole man. What kine’ ob teef is yor got! De ball-hended Moses, man, you'se got tushes like a yallergater!” The “‘yaller man” handed an arm to old Ed. The heartless old fellow took it between his teeth and closed down, The yaller man yelled so loud that the ferryman, living cn the opposite bank of the river answered, and brought his boat over. “Go on away,” the old mar, “Yer can't stan no pain. T wouldn't lower my daughter to marry such a pusson.” The ‘“‘yaller man” left. Tke black mau came and was tried, but all were unable to stand the pressure of the old man’s jaws. Finally 3 ““democrat nigger” from Little Rock went down. The same proposition was made and accepted. “Ef yer think dat yer canlstan’ de pressure yer can try,” said old Ed., “‘but T'll be dinged if yer don’t wish yer'd nebber had seed me.” “Tam willing,” said the democrat nigger. “I have been a teacher in the public schools, and can stand any- thing. But first wo must draw up papers.”’ ‘‘Dat’s all right,” replied Ed. “We'so done dot afore an’ hit did not skere me.” The papers were drawn up and aworn to before a justice of the peace. The farm and girl were to bo the democrat nigger's property in case of his success. The day was appointed. All parties were on time. Old Ed. had led his teeth until they were as sharp as the knives of an oat-cutter. “4Is yer ready?” asked the old man. “Perfectly,” asked the democrat nigger. “I wants yer all to bar witness,” re- marked Ed._to acrowd that had gath- ered around. “Now watch de man took the man's arm between his teeth and closed down on it. Not a muscle of the democrat nizeer’s face moved. The old man opened his mouth and closed down again. The face of the democrat nigger was as sg- renc as though the sunshine of a glo- rious future fell upon it. ““Take de farm an’ de gal,” said the old man. “You'se de boss of dis country.” The wedding was solemnized that night. After tho guests were gone, old Ed. approached his son-in-law and asked if he did not want some lin- iment to put on hisarm. The son- in-law did not. ““Lemmy sce whar I bityer.” The democrat nigger pulled off his glove and rolled up his sleeve, the old man grabbed at a gun in the cor er, and the young man flew. His arms were made of cork. ‘Able lawyers have been employed, and the suit, as statad in the begi ning of this article, is likely to bea heavy one. Call for Republican County Conyen- tion.
