AN ANNUAL CONVENTION HELD BY 'VENOMOUS REPTILES. Tionesta (Pa.) Cor. Oil City Derrick. Bosiding In an_adjoining townsbip less than half a Iil"l drive from thi 'easant town, lives an honest old rman farmer, whom we will call Uncle Ben. Having - been well so- quainted with Unole Bon for eeversl years, we oan vouch for his truth and Veracity in all other thinge, and of course we are well s -fiuf’m his account of his thrilling adventure among the serpents is also true and not overdrawn. Uncle Ben says that one hot day in June, not many years g0, he started out to hunt hus cattle that had strayed away from home. Daring the course of his long walk through the woods and barrens of his township, which is spareely settled, he came to & section of coun- try near a stream which empties into Tionesta creek a few miles above this place. There was a hundred acres or more of wild, broken ground strewn with small rocks and bowlders, while among the rocks grew tangled bushes, briars and an ional large tree. On the whole it was among the wild- est and most picturoeque sections it was our Uncle Ben's good or ill for- tune to explore. Upon entering the glon he roticed a poculiar odor on the air, which he at first attributed to the bloom of the laurel bushes which grew in great abundance throogh the glen, mixed with the odors of other wild flowers which blossomed in great abundsnce wherever the scanty soil gave their roots a chance for nourish- ment. Proceeding on his course, he had hardly entered the glen when he discovered several snskes sun- niog themselves upon the rocks and ‘the flat stones. As he, in common with most farm- ers, was in the habit of always killing sny snakes he came across, he cut & hickory club and killed all those which did not glide under rocks or dart out of reach. Continuing through the rocky hollow or glen, he found, st he progressed, that the horrid reptiles grow more numerous and his club was in coustant use. Great yellow and black rattleenakes sprung their warn- ing rattles and coiled themselves in spiral hesps, prepared to bury their deadly fangs in any enemy who dared to come within their reach. Huge copperheade, those deathly reptiles who strike without any warning and whose bite is almost sure desth, barred his progress, while garter snskes, both great avd small, ard milk snakes, with an occasionanl black racer, were also mixed indiscriminately together, ap- parently in the greatest harmouy. his atick with all to the rank and poisonous smell iog from the rattlemakes st various times, he got desdly faiat, and feared his life would pay the penalty of bis rashoess in penetrating this sea of serpents; but g himself for & fow minutes and using his hat for 8 fan, be would partially recover his 50 | wonted strength, and determived to b | fight his way out of the horrid mas of writhing, hissiog serpents, he pressed onward to th‘o attack. Inch by inch, sud foot by foot he had to cfixb a pathway through the horrid sea of crawling, hissing reptiles, In this way be estimated ho traveled about & quacter of a mile, sod he says in good faith, with sll the air of truth and veracity for which he is mo- tod, that he must have killed at least 600 or 700 different snakes, How wide the army of anakes Uncle Ben does not know, ss on emerging from the main body of them he was 80 exhausted by his superhu- man exertions and overcome with poison which he had inbaled in forc- ing bis way through the snakes that he did not rewain ‘o_investig Thinkicg himself very lucky in es- caping with his life, he did not wait to investigate the wonderful collectlon, Dut hastened home at the fastest gait be could command. In relating the ‘memorable adventure, Uncle Ben re- members of seeing s monster snake which he thinks was the king of the whole assemblage. He eays hissnake- ‘s body was as large as a man thigh, and the length in proportion. Uncle Ben s of the opinion the snakes ut of their dens among the rocks, and the immense number 1n so small an ares of ground, which he estimated at about twenty acres, was owing to 3 general consultation or gathering before their annual spreading out over the land. Ho thinks there are many thousands of the snakes, about one- fourth being rattlesnakes and copper- heads. We have often heard of sev- eral rattlesnake dens, whers, at oer- tain_seasons of the year, immente numbers of these venomous_reptiles can be killed, but.the aboveadventure Isys over all other accounts of snake- seeing and snake-killing in Ferest county. Should sny doubt the above account, or feel like visiting one of those noted dens, let him come here on & warm day in esrly Juue, and our word for it, he can find plenty of men who can gulde him to one or more places where he can see plenty of liv- ing rattlesnakes, some of them of great size. Thereis s well known rattle- mmake den on the point acroes the river from this place, also & noted den or two in Hickory wwmhl&, not far from the village of East Hickory; one near Indian Camp Run, and snother a few miles north of Tionests Run. Most of these dens are visited annually and large numbers of the polsonous reptiles slanghtered. — A High Horse. From the Now York Tribune. Mr. Seth Green says that one mor ning when he was watching a_spider's nest s mad wasp allighted within an inch or two of the ““é' on_the opposite the upening. Creeding noise- laaly around soward the entrance of the nest, the wasp stopped a little short ot it, and fora moment remained perfectly quiet. Then, reaching out one of his antennm, he wiggled it b fore the opening, and withdrew it. This overture had tho desired effect, for the boss of the r, as large a spider as one ordinarily a¢es, came out. to what waa wrong and to set it to rights. No sooner had the spider emerged to that point at which he was at worst disadvantage, than the wasp, with a quick movement, thrust ing into the body of bis fos, ing him easily and almost iostant- ly. 'T'he experiment was repeated on the part of the wasp, and when thero was no raponse from the inside he be- came satisfied, probably that he held the fort. At -l‘i events, hs proceeded to enter the nest snd slaughter the young spiders, which were afterward lugged off one at » time. Glass Beads. Saturday Review.
