As the Sistance between the 520 00 | hunters and the-herd grows lers, the Bucks divest themselves of all their clothing save the breechclout, and the superfluous garments are haoded to their squaws for safe keeping, to- gether with the ponies they have been riding, s they now mount the fresh animals their better halves bring up to them. The old buffalo bull, actis as utmest guard, has heard a soun he can not explain; he turns to warn the unsuspecting herd of his ot sl- together groundless fears, when the whole party of Indiaus, like one man, give the ponies their head and sweep down upon the grazing herd. But not grazing now! for, as if by magic, the wholazerd becomes aware of the danger, snd with heads low and tails erect they are bounding over the level plain before them at a much faster rato than their lumbering bodies would lead one to suppose posible. The Indians, dashing up on the fianks of the moving column, pour in their deadly fire. Not waiting to see the result, they urge their ponies em, still fring (zometimes so near that the barrol of the rifle rests on the buffalo) as fast as they cau lead, till their pontes pause from exhaustion and the skeleton herd is bayord reach of their weapons. While pursuers and pur sued have been thus actively engaged the equaws have not been idle, for, as the huat ceases, you find them with their prck animals already on the field where the dead buffalo’s lie. The bucks, returning ride down slong the desd and dying, and polut out to their_squaws thoso they have slain, snd when tbe squaw has put her own individusl mark up- on them then she begins her part of the huat, which is skinning, cuttiog up and packing. I have seen 500 buffaloes killed in -the above manner, and I have never yet teard a dispute arise owing to a buck having mistaken animsl he had killed. It would seem as if the desd carcass had ‘‘a toogue in every wound that cried, ‘‘Pass me not g ; you killed me.” The squaws are natural butchers. There is not a miss-cut made in re- moviog the robs, nor is one particle 16 | of the animal left for the coyotes that %[ can boin any way mmnc} by :}\us = people. A MODIFICATION ON A SMALL BCALE OF THE FAMOUS CALORIC MOTOR. Now York Sun. Amid the ponderous machinery on the third floor of the \mater iton- ks, in East Thirteenth street, there stood, yesterdsy, very modest little engine designed by Ospt. Jobn Ericsson. _Although it bas no builer, and is without valve of an ter into a tub. At the first glance it 0| fas almest- impossible to discover where the power originates that moves the parts. A close inspection, howaver, discovers the fact that three 25 | gas jets burn unders closed cylinder. 00 | This heats the air within the cylinder, which expands snd_forces the piston 35 | up through the cylinder head. The air is cooled in the upper part of the cylinder by means of what is called water jacket, and its consequent con- traction brings the piston back With the gauge indioating a pressure of twenty pounds o the square inch yesterdsy, this little engine d 200 gallons of water 46 feet an hour. One of the peoulisrities of this engine is that it requires no_attention. It will run noiselessly day and night, without variation in power, by means of three ordinary gss jets, or 16 cubic feet per hour. Thi g the osse, the cost per hour for sach an engine used in pumpiog Croton to the top of a high building in this city would be about 3 cents, reckoning gas at $2 per 1000 cubic feet. . In the country a coal furnace could be used. The same air is heated over and over again. The intensity of the heat within the cyli der is only about 400° Fahrenheit, and eufficient power to burst the cylinder head, it is said, could not be genera- ted wichin the cylinder. It is said that this engine csn_be used sucoess- fully against s head of 160 feet of water. It occupies a space upon the floor of 39 to 20 inches, and is 48 fnch- eshigh. Its running is noiseless. This engine was constructed by Cap- tain Ericston on ;ih: theory of his first coloric eogine. Many years ago, be- Tieving that he could propel -':holp by wneans of the application of the same principle, be built a ship and fitted it with imilarly constructed. But whilo the venture proved a scien- tific success, it was not so from a com- mercial point, as the speed sttained was not satisfactory, and the ides, as far as ships weve concerned, was aban- doned. Six small engines of the de- scription of that exhibited yesterdsy were an by the de;mdunn Erics- son’s institution, yoars ago, and several of them, it is sald, are still in use in various parts of the country. Ericsson, however, was so anxious to perfect his solar engine, described in the Sun last Sadp‘umber, that he did not patent the desiga until now. S— A D gusted Enumerator. Cor, Chicage fribane.
