Schroth, the proprietor of the B. & M. gardens, situated near the B. & M. track near Boyd's pack- ing house, now lissin a very critical condition from the effects of wourds received at the hands of Joseph Ack- crand Charles Whitman, The stcry, a3 told by Mra. Schroth, is as followe: Sunday night st about twelve o’clock $1e saloon was closed for the night and Schroth and his wife proceeded to the salocn of one Wanhuse, situated a short distance below their own. Ar- rived there they found that the daucing, which had been going on during the night had ceased. They seated themselves upon a beuch oui- side of the sa'oon and Mr. Schroth called for “two beers.” The beverage was not immediately forthcoming, and Joseph Acker, comiog to the door, was requested by Schroth to call for two glasses of beer. Acker replied, “P'll give you beer g—d— you, you're the man that's blowing atout whipping everybod; Mrs. Schroth endeavered to re- monstrate, but she was told with an oath to “‘shut up” and in anothor me- ment Mr. and Mrs. Schroth weie knocked down a_bank, which is ated nesr where they were sitting. Mrs. Schroth ssys she heard Acker call Whitman by name and requested him to bring out aclub or a pistol, as he would “kill the red-headed —." She called to her husband to run for hia life. He attempted to do so, but discovered that he was disabled by a bruise on the right leg. He tried to limp away, however, but had proceeded ouly a few steps when he was etruck cn the head by some instrument and felled to the ground senseless. On recovering he started for home bleeding profusely from the wound on his head. Binding up his wound with an old shirt, he started for assistance, which was soon rendered by a watchman in the em- ploy of the B. & M. railroad. He was carried to the office of Dr. Darrow on Ninth street, near the U. P. depot, where his wounds were dressed. Our reporter found him this worn- ing at his residence suffering inteusely. The wound is on the right ride of the head about six inches inlength. Itis a clean cut tothe skull. Dr. Darrow informed our re- porter that he thought the skull was not fractured, but that there were many chances of mortification setting in, in which cssethe wound would probably prove fatal. Acker and Whiteman were arrested about two o'clock and lodged in the county jail where they will await the result of their brutal attack. Schroth eays that the only motive the men could possibly have was his refueal to extend them further credit on his books. TWENTY DOZ. LISLE LACE-TOP GLOVES, Just received at L. B. Williams & Son’s. FRENCH & CO,, The Original Reliable Grocers, No. 1119 Faroham Street, The production of the Pirates of Penzance at the Academy last night by D'Oyly Carte’s London Opara com- pany fairly deserves to be entitled the event of the season. Nota seat in the suditorium was vacant, and but few in the galleries. The audience wss compozed of the very beat class of our citizens, critical but appreciative. The interest and enthusissm wasunbounded throughout the play. It could not have been bet- ter put upon the stage of any metro- politan opera house, whilo the man- sgement throughout was without a siogle flaw The story is extremely humorous and extravagant, though scarcely as satirical in its conception as Pinafore, which opera is a telling hit upon the British navy. As to its musical merit the Pirates | should rather be contrasted than com- pared with the airs of its predecessor. The musio is entirely of a higher class, a0d is brilliant, and in some parts im- pressive, while in Pinafore it is mere- Iy tuneful and pleasiog by resson of its simplicity. The costumes were rich, harmonious in shades and artistically finished in design. SaT AT N Large Varisty of White and Fancy Shirtsat M. Hriiwax & Co.’s. jonl8eod2w Raving Drunk. Al Sorenson, who came up-at that time, was attacked by one of the women and forced to beat a re- treat. The women were conveyed to jail, howling like domons all the way up and attracting a lerge crowd to the various street corners along the lino cf march. They sre old timers. —_— M.
